Medical cannabis is gaining popularity in the U.S. due to increasing evidence of its numerous health benefits.

However, doctors cannot prescribe medical cannabis like traditional pharmaceutical drugs. Here is everything you need to know.

What is Medical Cannabis?

The actual plant of medical cannabis and nonmedical cannabis is the same. Medical cannabis refers to cannabis distributed through a state-regulated program. Cannabis consists of active compounds known as cannabinoids and offers various potential health benefits.

While “cannabis” is the scientific term for the plant, it’s often referred to by slang names like weed and bud. The term “marijuana” is outdated and avoided because of its racially charged origins.

Getting a Medical Cannabis Card

Although procedures vary by state, most require you to register with the state’s medical marijuana registry, typically done online. During registration, you must provide proof of your doctor’s approval for using medical cannabis for your symptoms.

To complete registration, your state may ask you to create an online account to submit your application and doctor’s approval. This account also stores your information for renewing your medical marijuana card in the future. If applying with a caregiver, they must submit their credentials.

You will probably need to pay a fee for your medical marijuana card, which varies by state, and online payments are generally accepted. After receiving your card, you can purchase medical marijuana. Look for a reliable company that can provide an excellent resource for obtaining a medical marijuana card online. One with doctors specializing in your area who will also guide patients through the entire process.

Who Qualifies for Medical Cannabis?

To qualify for medical cannabis, a medical condition is necessary. Chronic pain is the most common reason for its use. The most prevalent conditions for use are:

  • Multiple sclerosis
  • Chemotherapy-induced nausea and vomiting
  • Cancer

Many states maintained lists of qualifying conditions for medical cannabis. For instance, Alabama recognized 15 conditions, including any terminal illness, while Washington state had over 12, such as glaucoma and PTSD.

However, medical cannabis laws are evolving. Many states are now removing these lists or permitting licensed practitioners to recommend cannabis for any suitable health condition.

The National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws provides a list of states with medical cannabis laws and patient qualification details.

Register With the Health Department

Each state has its own rules and procedures for medical marijuana patients. For example, in Connecticut and New York, patients must register with the state health department on their own before getting their card. Although this bureaucratic step can be annoying, it’s generally not a major hurdle. The specific requirements depend on your state.

In California, no extra steps are needed after receiving doctor approval; they send your recommendation immediately by email and a hard copy by mail. If you have questions about what to do after certification, consult your doctor or check your state health department’s website for advice.

Limitations for Obtaining a Medical Card

The designated caregiver is prohibited from using the cannabis intended for their patient’s medical needs. They must:

  • Supply cannabis exclusively to their assigned patient.
  • Serve as the caregiver for only one patient at a time.
  • Comply with RCW 69.51A regulations.

A patient can appoint only one caregiver at a time. To change or remove a caregiver, patients should complete the Revocation Request form and submit it to the specified address. Patients wishing to appoint a new caregiver must consult their healthcare provider for a new authorization form.

Endnote

When meeting with your doctor, whether in person or through telemedicine, it’s helpful to have your medical records accessible.

More records can assist your doctor in making a more accurate evaluation.
