The Dorchester’s iconic afternoon tea returns to Beverly Hills’ Polo Lounge, blending British tradition with California charm this spring.

After a pause that felt much too long, afternoon tea is back at the Polo Lounge in The Beverly Hills Hotel this spring. From May 8 to June 28, guests can settle in every Thursday, Friday and Saturday afternoon for a proper tea service, with two seatings at 2:30 pm and 3:30 pm.

What makes this return especially exciting is the collaboration with The Dorchester in London, a hotel that has been synonymous with British luxury and tradition for nearly a century.

Afternoon tea is a classic ritual in the UK, a chance to take a break, enjoy company and indulge in elegant bites and expertly brewed tea. It has a timeless appeal, and while it’s deeply rooted in British culture, it’s a tradition that crosses borders beautifully. The Polo Lounge, with its signature pink walls and storied Hollywood history, provides an unexpectedly perfect stage for this classic ritual.

Bringing British Elegance to Beverly Hills

The Dorchester in London recently completed a significant renovation, updating its interiors with fresh, contemporary touches while honouring the hotel’s heritage. Inspired by that transformation, The Beverly Hills Hotel’s team, led by their British culinary director Ashley James, have created a tea service that honours the spirit of The Dorchester but fits the relaxed luxury and sunny atmosphere of Beverly Hills.

Ashley James is no stranger to this kind of balancing act. As a Brit who has made California his home, he understands the importance of tradition, but also knows that guests here want something approachable, light, and perfectly suited to the season.

The menu is a careful blend of classic favourites and thoughtful local touches. The smoked salmon sandwiches, with capers and lemon cream, are delicate and fresh, exactly what you’d expect at a high-end afternoon tea, but they also feel light enough for the California climate.

Pastry chef Jonathan Fisher’s sweets include pistachio choux and rich chocolate mini tarts, alongside warm, house-made scones served with clotted cream and preserves, that essential British combination that no tea should be without.

More Than Just Tea and Treats

One of the real highlights is the tea itself. The selection includes rare blends exclusive to The Dorchester Collection. These aren’t your everyday teas, they’re carefully chosen for flavour and complexity. Tea here is treated as an art form; it’s not rushed, nor casual. The brewing is precise, allowing each cup to develop its full character.

The entire experience is presented on fine bone china, the very same as used in London, which adds a subtle, lovely sense of connection to the original Dorchester tradition. It’s a small detail, but an important one, speaking to the thoughtfulness behind every part of this service.

The atmosphere at the Polo Lounge is warm and inviting. This is a place where the world’s most famous actors and artists have gathered, but it never feels intimidating or stuffy. Instead, it feels lived-in and genuine, perfect for an afternoon spent lingering over tea and conversation.

A Word from Ashley James

Speaking about the partnership, Ashley James said, “It’s an incredible honour to partner with our sister hotel, The Dorchester, a beacon of sophistication and timeless elegance in the heart of London, as we bring afternoon tea back to the Polo Lounge. Their recent transformation has redefined the hotel’s heritage with a bold, contemporary sensibility, something we’ve channelled into this tea experience. Every detail, from the selection of teas to the presentation of seasonal ingredients, reflects the artistry and inspiration that define both properties.”

His words capture the spirit of the offering, it’s not just about tradition for tradition’s sake, but about bringing something alive in a way that feels authentic and thoughtful.

Why Afternoon Tea Still Matters

In today’s world, where everything moves fast and digital distractions are everywhere, afternoon tea offers a rare chance to pause and be present. It’s a reminder that good food, good drink, and good company deserve attention and care.

This revival at the Polo Lounge doesn’t try to reinvent the wheel; it respects the history and importance of afternoon tea but makes sure it suits the pace and style of Beverly Hills today. Whether you’re local or visiting, it’s a lovely way to spend a couple of hours with friends, family, or simply on your own.

The Perfect Spring Ritual

The timing couldn’t be better. With spring in full bloom, the Polo Lounge’s garden views and bright, colourful décor create an uplifting backdrop. The seating times on Thursdays through Saturdays make it easy to fit in, whether as a weekday treat or weekend indulgence.

Booking is recommended, as this is a limited-time experience and expected to be popular. Reservations can be made online or by calling the Polo Lounge directly.

A Thoughtful Collaboration

This return of afternoon tea is more than just a new menu. It’s a meeting of two iconic hotels, two cultures, and two approaches to luxury hospitality.

The Dorchester’s London elegance meets Beverly Hills’ easy glamour, resulting in a tea service that feels fresh, genuine and just a little bit special.
