China Tang Dubai opens at The Lana Promenade, bringing refined Cantonese cuisine and elegant design to the heart of Downtown Dubai

China Tang Dubai has officially opened at The Lana Promenade, Dorchester Collection, marking the restaurant’s first location in the Middle East. Already a well-known name in London, the brand was founded by the late Sir David Tang and has built a reputation for classic Cantonese cooking, refined interiors, and discreet glamour.

The Dubai opening is a continuation of that story, offering a new destination for those who appreciate tradition, elegance, and excellent food.

Set alongside the Marasi Bay Marina in Downtown Dubai, the restaurant brings the signature style of China Tang to a new audience. The setting, within The Lana, Dorchester Collection’s recently launched hotel, is an appropriate match for a concept that values detail, atmosphere, and old-school service.

Interiors That Don’t Try Too Hard

China Tang Dubai stays true to the design language of the original Mayfair location. Chinoiserie accents, custom stained glass, handpicked decorative pieces, and patterned wallpaper create a space that feels designed rather than themed. There’s a strong sense of order and balance throughout, right down to the mirrored ceilings and the careful lighting, which subtly nods to traditional Chinese philosophies of harmony.

The cocktail bar has its own quiet presence, low-lit and well-considered, designed as a place to begin or extend the evening without needing to rush. The drinks list has been developed to match the kitchen’s menu, with options that work just as well alongside dim sum as they do on their own.

The Kitchen Is the Point

The menu at China Tang Dubai is led by Chef Li Zhenjun, who brings more than 25 years of experience in Cantonese fine dining.

There’s a sense of restraint and clarity across the dishes, respect for technique and ingredients without unnecessary complexity. The aim is not reinvention but refinement.

Signature dishes include:

  • Sir David’s Hot and Sour Soup
  • Xiao Long Bao
  • Kung Pao Prawns
  • Crispy Shredded Beef
  • Whole Lobster with E-Fu Noodles
  • China Tang Signature Beijing Duck, carved at the table and slow-roasted in a specially built oven room, visible as guests arrive

The Beijing Duck, in particular, is treated with a seriousness that stands out. While pre-orders are suggested, it can also be ordered on arrival, with a wait of around 45 to 60 minutes.

There are also new dishes created specifically for China Tang Dubai, including:

  • Foie Gras Cherries
  • Honey-Glazed Beef Char Siu
  • “Da Hong Pao” Lamb Cutlets
  • Poached Spotted Coral Grouper in Spicy Sichuan Oil

The dim sum selection is extensive, with a focus on precision and consistency. Presentation is clean, never fussy.

A Space Designed for the City

China Tang Dubai spans two levels and seats 180 guests. Two private dining rooms offer space for more discreet occasions, whether personal or professional. As with the original London location, service plays a central role. The team has been trained to offer a style of hospitality that is professional, not performative, and the details, from the tableware to the tea list, have been chosen with care.

This is a restaurant that respects the dining experience without trying to make a spectacle of it. It’s calm, elegant, and structured around the idea that great service should feel effortless.

A New Chapter for the China Tang Brand

Opening in Dubai was always going to be a significant move for the brand. Speaking on the launch, Nathalie Ford, VP Europe and Middle East for China Tang, said:

“We are incredibly proud to introduce China Tang to Dubai, a city that continues to push the boundaries of global dining. This opening marks an exciting new chapter for the brand, and we are thrilled to bring our signature blend of Cantonese culinary tradition and elevated design to one of the world’s most dynamic gastronomic destinations.”

The Dubai restaurant joins a family that includes the original China Tang at The Dorchester and Dim Sum by China Tang at Harrods. Both London locations continue to attract regulars and new visitors alike. Together, they form part of the wider Lai Sun Dining portfolio, a Hong Kong-based hospitality group chaired by Dr Peter Lam. The group currently operates over 25 venues and holds eight Michelin stars across its global properties.

The Man Behind the Name

Sir David Tang was known for many things: entrepreneur, columnist, philanthropist, and patron of the arts. He moved easily between London and Hong Kong, between business and culture. He launched China Tang in 2005, following the success of his China Club ventures across Asia.

His aim was to create spaces that were both serious about food and welcoming in tone, clubs and restaurants where taste, in every sense, mattered. He passed away in 2017 at the age of 63, but the character and intention behind his work continue to shape the direction of China Tang.

Practical Details

China Tang Dubai is open daily from 12 PM to 11 PM. Bookings can be made via telephone at +971 4 295 7464 or by emailing reservations@chinatangdubai.com.

Conclusion

China Tang Dubai doesn’t try to redefine Cantonese cuisine. It doesn’t need to. The strength of the concept lies in its consistency, its confidence, and its attention to detail.

For diners looking for a quiet, assured take on classic dishes in a setting that respects tradition without being stuck in it, this new opening is well worth knowing about.
