Cross-country trips always make for a fun adventure with the family. When kids are involved, however, things can go haywire. Between keeping your kids entertained and ensuring they stay calm, there are often adjustments that need to be made during the trip.

That said, here are five tips to plan a successful cross-country trip with your kids.

1. Stock Up on Snacks

Long road trips call for snacks! Load up with all of your (and your kids’) favorites. From chips and pretzels to cookies and crackers, there are numerous snack options to consider. Don’t forget to load up on the drinks to quench everyone’s thirst: water, juice, soda, tea, or energy drinks.

2. Brainstorm Entertainment Options

Children are bound to get bored on long car rides. Being cramped in a small vehicle with several others for hours on end isn’t exactly what the average kid or teen would find “entertainment.”

That said, consider some options for keeping your kids entertained. Put together a family playlist to listen to, buy your kids coloring books or magazines, or have the kiddos bring a tablet or handheld gaming console with them to keep distracted on the drive. There are also a variety of car-friendly games to play solo or as a family.

3. Plan Meals Ahead of Time

If you’re looking to save money, or simply want to avoid eating nothing but fast food on your cross-country drive, consider planning your meals ahead of time.

This may mean planning on stopping at certain restaurants along your route, budgeting your family’s meals, or even bringing meals with you for affordable and on-the-go lunch and dinners. Planning ahead can save you the headache of trying to figure out what to eat later, especially when you’re on a long country road with few restaurants nearby.

4. Upgrade Your Family Vehicle

Before heading off on your trip, you’re going to want to make sure you have a reliable vehicle. If your car is prone to breaking down, upgrading to a dependable vehicle from a used car dealership Boerne can prevent a mechanical mishap from happening when you’re hundreds of miles away from home.

5. Make Frequent Stops

Children typically have weaker bladders than we do. Not to mention, they often need more stretch breaks than us and frequent physical movement to get their wiggles out. For this reason, you’re going to want to plan to make several stops on your drive.

While making multiple stops can delay the time you reach your destination, extra stops are often necessary when you have kids on board. A quick bathroom break, a breath of fresh air, and getting to walk around after sitting in the same position for hours might be exactly what you and your tiny passengers need.

Conclusion

Nothing beats a cross-country trip with the family! If you’re looking for ways to keep your kids tame on the long drive, the latter tips will come in handy. From stocking up on snacks to making frequent stops, you can keep everyone sane until you reach your final destination.
