Rolls-Royce unveils the one-off Cullinan Cosmos, featuring the first hand-painted Starlight Headliner inspired by a family’s vision of the universe.

Rolls-Royce has revealed the Cullinan Cosmos, a one-off commission that turns the brand’s flagship SUV into a vehicle inspired by the universe itself.

It is the product of close collaboration between the Bespoke Collective and a family who wanted their young son’s fascination with the cosmos to become something lasting.

The result is a highly detailed car that shows how far Rolls-Royce will go to deliver a vision.

Breaking New Ground in Bespoke Craft

The centrepiece is the first hand-painted Starlight Headliner in Rolls-Royce history. One of the marque’s in-house artists spent 160 hours on it, working entirely by hand. For Rolls-Royce, it marks a new step in what can be achieved inside a car’s cabin.

The family’s ambition was clear from the start. “We wanted to create something our family would remember forever: a Rolls-Royce that captures the essence of the cosmos and shows that no dream is out of reach,” the commissioning client said.

Phil Fabre de la Grange, Head of Bespoke at Rolls-Royce Motor Cars, added: “Space travel is an enduring fascination for the commissioning clients of this extraordinary one-of-one motor car. For the Bespoke Collective, this project also explored new frontiers, with our first-ever hand-painted Starlight Headliner. Bold in its conception and spectacular in its realisation, this commission demonstrates how Rolls-Royce brings clients’ otherworldly visions to life with drama, depth, and absolute precision.”

Exterior: Light and Detail

The exterior is finished in Arabescato Pearl, chosen for its resemblance to moonlight across a dark sky.

The depth and movement in the paint are achieved by layering pigments, a process that changes depending on how the light falls.

Twin coachlines in Charles Blue carry the theme across the bodywork. These are painted entirely by hand, with each line requiring accuracy to the millimetre. A misstep would mean starting again.

Completing the effect is an illuminated Spirit of Ecstasy, which glows at night and strengthens the celestial theme.

Interior: Calm and Contemplation

Inside, the cabin has been designed to create a sense of space and stillness. Charles Blue and Grace White leather dominate, with stitching and piping in matching tones. The intention is not just luxury but harmony with the car’s overall theme.

Piano White veneers add contrast. They reference the reflective surfaces of satellites and other space technology, a subtle nod to the inspiration without being literal.

Every detail has been thought through to tie the car back to its guiding idea.

The Star Cluster Motif

A bespoke Star Cluster motif appears throughout. It is embroidered into door panels and headrests, while a hand-painted version features on the front passenger fascia.

The pattern was developed in partnership with the family and acts as a visual link across the car. Rather than being decorative alone, it carries the story of the commission into each surface.

The Starlight Headliner

The headliner is the most striking feature. It is fully hand-painted, a first for Rolls-Royce.

The artist built the effect through more than twenty layers of acrylic paint, adding clouds and depth with a mix of brushes, including some not usually used in automotive work, such as makeup brushes.

Stars were added using speckling techniques and fine brushes, giving the field an organic look.

No two viewing angles appear the same. Only after the painting was complete were fibre-optic perforations punched into the material by hand, each one positioned to work with the artwork.

The result is a ceiling that mimics the Milky Way in a way no car has shown before.

Commissioned Through Private Office Dubai

The project was overseen by Private Office Dubai. Rolls-Royce’s Private Offices are designed to handle commissions at this level, providing cultural understanding as well as technical expertise.

In this case, the team guided the family from idea to finished car.

Performance and Practical Detail

Behind the artistry, Cullinan Cosmos remains a Rolls-Royce SUV. It records WLTP combined CO2 emissions of 380-363 g/km, with fuel consumption at 16.8-17.7 mpg.

These figures underline the balance the brand seeks between performance, luxury, and regulatory requirements.

The car drives with the same mechanical refinement expected of the Cullinan, ensuring the art does not come at the expense of function.

Legacy of the Commission

Cullinan Cosmos is more than a bespoke car. It pushes Rolls-Royce into new territory and opens the door for future commissions that use hand-painting in ways not seen before.

The Starlight Headliner technique alone is likely to influence future projects.

It also strengthens Rolls-Royce’s position as the ultimate maker of personalised cars, where almost anything can be made possible.

The family took delivery of their car at a meaningful time, ensuring that every journey would carry the story behind the commission.

Cullinan Cosmos now sits within the rarest group of Rolls-Royce creations.

It is not simply a mode of transport but a statement of what bespoke work can be when a client’s vision meets the skills of the brand’s craftspeople.

It will likely be remembered as one of the defining commissions of its era.
