Some collaborations arrive with a sense of inevitability. Two brands whose histories, aesthetics and driving purposes fit together so naturally that the only question worth asking is why it took this long.

The partnership between Liberty London and Ocean Bottle is exactly that. Announced on 28th July 2026, Currents: First Wave brings together one of Britain’s most enduring luxury retailers and a social impact brand built on ocean conservation, producing a collection of reusable bottles that is as visually compelling as it is purposeful.

This is the opening chapter of a long-term creative exchange, one designed to deepen with every new season.

A Meeting Of Minds, Missions And Motifs

To understand why this collaboration carries real weight, it helps to appreciate what each brand brings. Liberty has spent more than 150 years sourcing beauty from across the globe, building an archive of prints that remains one of the most celebrated design repositories in the world. Its Regent Street store, with its distinctive Tudor Revival facade, has long operated as a temple to artistry, craft and the kind of considered consumption that prioritises longevity over trend.

Ocean Bottle is a younger but no less purposeful enterprise. Founded on the conviction that commerce and conservation are not mutually exclusive, the brand has built a model in which every bottle sold directly funds the collection of plastic waste from coastal communities. To date, Ocean Bottle has funded the collection of more than 26 million kilograms of plastic worldwide. That figure speaks not just to commercial success but to genuine, measurable environmental impact. Collectors participating in the scheme exchange recovered plastic for money and gain access to social resources including healthcare, education and financial security. The ripple effect extends far beyond what is immediately visible.

The Currents collaboration channels both legacies into a single object: a beautifully designed reusable bottle carrying Liberty’s archive prints on its surface and Ocean Bottle’s environmental mission at its core. Each bottle purchased funds the collection of 11.4 kilograms of plastic in coastal communities around the world. A tangible return on an elegant investment.

First Wave: Three Designs, Three Stories

The First Wave collection comprises three distinct designs, each drawn from Liberty’s storied archive and reimagined through the lens of Ocean Bottle’s coastal mission. Together they form a triptych of visual narratives, each speaking to the relationship between human creativity, cultural heritage and the natural world.

Enzo Serenade is the most eclectic of the three. Hand-drawn in Liberty’s studio, the design takes its cues from the creative legacy of Lewis Foreman Day, the Arts and Crafts movement luminary whose influence on decorative design during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries was both profound and far-reaching. The result is a pattern characterised by an exuberant mix of motifs and stylistic references, a visual conversation across centuries. For Ocean Bottle, Enzo Serenade becomes something more specific: a meditation on craft heritage and coastal landscapes, evoking the forest paths and waterways that have long connected communities to the natural world around them. There is warmth here, a sense of journeys taken and traditions maintained.

Morley Blossom takes a different approach, weaving together no fewer than ten archival floral prints from the 1930s into a lush, layered patchwork. The original designs speak to Liberty’s skill in botanical illustration, a tradition stretching back to the brand’s earliest years. Translated for Ocean Bottle, Morley Blossom becomes a meditation on the places where rivers meet the ocean: a world of water, flora and perpetual movement. The abundance of coastal life is present in every detail. It is a design that rewards close inspection, revealing new relationships with each viewing.

Prospect Vista completes the trio with a nod to the stylistic hallmarks of the 1960s Art Nouveau revival era. Hand-painted in Liberty’s studio, the design echoes the motifs found in Bernard Nevill‘s ever-popular Prospect Road pattern, a reference that will resonate with anyone familiar with Liberty’s mid-century design heritage. For Ocean Bottle, Prospect Vista becomes a vision of ecological abundance: flowering species and rich ecosystems connected by rivers flowing from tropical rainforest to ocean. The design is at once nostalgic and urgently contemporary, its botanical imagery carrying renewed resonance at a moment when the world’s rainforests face real and growing pressure.

Bringing The Ocean To Regent Street

Liberty x Ocean Bottle Launch Party

The launch of Currents: First Wave is accompanied by an installation that transforms Liberty’s iconic atrium into something altogether more elemental. Running from 28th July to 23rd August, the installation, also titled Currents, is designed and delivered by Ocean Bottle as a sensory complement to the collection.

At its centre is a towering fabric column rising the full height of the Liberty Atrium. The column fades gradually from a pale, luminous surface blue at its peak to a deep ocean navy at its base, creating a visual journey from sunlit shallows to the darkest ocean depths. The effect is both spectacular and disquieting: a reminder that the beauty of the ocean and the scale of its plastic pollution crisis coexist, often invisibly, in the same body of water.

The installation is conceived as an invitation to pause, a moment of contemplative escape from the city, and a direct reminder of what is at stake in the fight against plastic pollution. In a retail environment more accustomed to celebrating beauty than confronting environmental reality, it strikes a quietly radical note.

Design As A Vehicle For Change

There is an idea that recurs throughout discussions of the Currents collaboration: that design can tell meaningful stories while generating positive impact. It is not a new concept. Liberty has long championed the notion that beautiful objects can carry deeper significance. But in the context of this partnership, it takes on particular urgency. This philosophy of design-led purposefulness echoes conversations happening across the luxury world, from fashion houses to landmark retail spaces redefining what luxury means in practice.

Pere Bruach, Design Manager at Liberty, articulates this sense of purposeful continuity with characteristic precision: “For more than 150 years, Liberty’s prints have told stories inspired by the natural world, craftsmanship and cultures from across the globe. This collaboration offered a natural opportunity to bring those stories into a new context, pairing our design heritage with Ocean Bottle’s commitment to creating meaningful environmental impact.”

For Ocean Bottle’s leadership, the partnership is an opportunity to reach new audiences through the language of luxury design, to demonstrate that caring about the ocean is not the preserve of environmental campaigners, but something that can be expressed through the objects one chooses to bring into daily life. Nick Doman, CEO and Co-Founder of Ocean Bottle, frames the collaboration in terms of complementary strengths: “Protecting the ocean is at the heart of everything Ocean Bottle does. Partnering with Liberty brings together exceptional design and measurable impact, creating a collection inspired by the coastal landscapes and communities our mission helps protect.”

Tam Rahimi, Partnership Director at Ocean Bottle, adds a broader philosophical dimension: “Currents is rooted in the idea that the ocean connects us all. Together with Liberty, we’ve created a collection that celebrates storytelling through design while helping to protect the places and communities that inspire it.”

The Architecture Of A Long-Term Vision

It would be a mistake to view Currents: First Wave in isolation. The collection is explicitly positioned as the opening movement of a longer composition, one that will unfold across seasons, each chapter exploring a different coastal landscape through Liberty prints drawn from the archive.

The structural logic of the collaboration is elegant in its simplicity. Liberty’s archive is vast, diverse and deeply connected to the cultures, ecosystems and artistic traditions of the world’s coastlines. Ocean Bottle’s mission is rooted in those same coastal communities, the places where plastic pollution is most acute and where the organisation’s network of collectors works hardest. Each new chapter of Currents will draw on this shared geography, finding new visual languages to express the connection between creativity, place and the natural world.

This seasonal, chapter-based approach also speaks to a growing sophistication among luxury consumers, who increasingly seek ongoing relationships with brands whose values they share and whose creative evolution they wish to follow. In an era of disposable fashion cycles and relentless newness, there is something genuinely refreshing about a collaboration designed to deepen over time rather than arrive fully formed and disappear just as quickly. It is a sensibility that finds expression across the wider cultural landscape, from heritage design traditions being thoughtfully reimagined for contemporary audiences to long-form creative partnerships redefining what luxury means.

Purposeful Luxury In Practice

The Currents collection also reflects a broader shift in the luxury sector’s relationship with sustainability. For much of the past decade, sustainability has been treated as an add-on: a quality mentioned in brand communications but rarely embedded in the fundamental design and commercial logic of a product. Currents: First Wave is more integrated than that. Environmental purpose here is not a footnote but a founding principle.

Every element of the collection’s narrative, from the choice of archive prints to the themes of coastal landscape, cultural connection and ecological abundance, is anchored in Ocean Bottle’s environmental mission. The bottles are not merely beautiful objects that happen to fund plastic collection. Their beauty is inseparable from the story of what they represent and what they make possible.

This is, arguably, the most consequential development in the luxury sustainability conversation: the move from virtue signalling to genuine alignment, from sustainability as marketing strategy to sustainability as creative brief. Liberty and Ocean Bottle have arrived at this moment from different directions. Their collaboration suggests that the two are, finally, one and the same. The urgency of that alignment is underscored by global efforts to address the plastic pollution crisis that continues to threaten marine ecosystems worldwide.
