For more than a century, Bugatti has been synonymous with the creation of some of the world’s most exquisite roadsters.

Jean Bugatti, a luminary in the automotive world, played a pivotal role in shaping many revered models. From the mid-1920s to the late 1930s, Bugatti’s commitment to perfection resulted in the production of limited numbers of open-top automobiles, including the Type 40 A, the Type 41 Roadster Esders, the Type 55 Roadster, and the iconic Type 57 Roadster Grand Raid Gangloff.

The W16 Mistral: A Bugatti Tour-de-Force

The W16 Mistral stands as a testament to Bugatti’s prowess, a captivating and highly significant roadster born in Molsheim. This masterpiece, propelled by Bugatti’s legendary W16 engine, follows in the footsteps of its predecessor, the Veyron Grand Sport Vitesse, which made its debut in 2012.

Notably, the Mistral marks the end of an era as the final road-going Bugatti model powered by the iconic W16 engine.

Bugatti’s commitment to engineering excellence is evident in the W16 Mistral. Unlike a mere re-development of the Chiron, this roadster boasts a bespoke design, featuring a reengineered monocoque that conforms to stringent crash regulations despite its roofless configuration.

Emilio Scervo, CTO of Bugatti Rimac, emphasizes the brand’s unwavering standards: “A Chiron without a roof might be an amazing car for many others, but it wouldn’t meet the uncompromisingly high standards that Bugatti adheres to. No matter what type of hyper sports car it is, a Bugatti model must be incomparable in every respect to anything else in the automotive world.”

Perfect Fusion of Performance and Luxury

The development of the W16 Mistral posed a challenge: achieving a top speed of 420km/h while ensuring a luxurious, refined, and assured experience inside the cabin. Bugatti’s ‘Form Follows Performance’ mantra guided every component’s design, setting new standards for both beauty and performance.

The roadster’s architecture prioritizes rigidity and lightweight construction, akin to the Chiron, ensuring dynamic, agile, and responsive driving. Ultra-high-performance lightweight composite materials and intricate structures minimize mass while enhancing chassis rigidity.

The innovative door design, a focal point during development, features an architectural arrangement that absorbs exceptional energy during side impacts, prioritizing safety.

Innovative Air Intake and Rollover Safety

The new exterior design necessitated an advanced air intake system for the Mistral. Innovative ram induction air scoops, positioned behind the headrests, not only contribute to rollover safety but also enhance the driver’s W16 experience.

Made from bespoke carbon fibre structures, these scoops can support the car’s entire weight in the event of a rollover, providing an unmatched safety feature.

The interior of the W16 Mistral is a testament to meticulous craftsmanship, with intricate woven leather on newly designed door panels. The gear shifter, machined from solid aluminium, pays homage to Rembrandt Bugatti’s ‘dancing elephant’ sculpture, connecting the modern roadster to Bugatti’s illustrious history.

The soundscape inside the Mistral combines the visceral presence of the W16 engine with a high-end sound system, creating a sensory pleasure even at high speeds.

The Bugatti W16 Mistral seamlessly continues Bugatti’s long tradition of crafting incredible roadsters that have captured admiration and reverence for decades.

This modern masterpiece, with its unique blend of performance, luxury, and safety innovations, stands as a fitting tribute to Bugatti’s legacy of roadster excellence.
