Sotheby’s is about to make history. The auction house has assembled more than 300 vintage Cartier watches for “The Shapes of Cartier: The Finest Vintage Grouping Ever Assembled,” expected to achieve over £15 million. This is the largest and most comprehensive collection of its kind ever brought to market.

A Century of Creative Evolution

Cartier sits alone at the apex of luxury watchmaking. The French maison has spent more than a century creating timepieces that function as both precision instruments and works of art. This collection chronicles that evolution throughout the 20th century, spanning all three historic branches: Cartier Paris, London, and New York.

Each piece tells its own story of technical ingenuity. From the iconic Tank to the surreal Crash, the collection includes rare variations, early examples, and singular pieces that capture Cartier’s creative range. A quarter-century of dedicated sourcing produced this assemblage.

The Revolutionary London Workshop

The collection’s most significant achievement lies in its unprecedented assembly of Cartier London pieces. During the late 1960s and early 1970s, Cartier’s three branches operated independently. London emerged as the most daring.

Under Jean-Jacques Cartier‘s leadership, the Bond Street atelier produced designs that deliberately departed from classical Cartier aesthetics. This experimental period, spanning roughly 1967 to 1974, birthed some of the most radical timepieces in horological history.

“The appeal of vintage Cartier lies in its ability to capture a moment in design history while remaining entirely timeless. Whether in the bold asymmetry of the Cartier Crash watch or the refined proportions of the Cartier Baignoire Allongée, each watch reflects a unique dialogue between artistry and innovation. This collection is remarkable not only for its breadth, but for its depth , particularly in its unprecedented assembly of Cartier London pieces, many of which are among the most important examples ever to appear on the market,” explains Sam Hines, Global Chairman, Sotheby’s Watches.

The 1987 Cartier London Crash

Leading the inaugural Hong Kong auction on 24th April 2026 is a rare yellow-gold Cartier London Crash circa 1987, estimated at £400,000-£800,000. This timepiece represents one of the most radical designs in horological history.

The Crash defies every conventional notion of watch design. Originally conceived in 1967 by Cartier London, its distinctive melted appearance captured the avant-garde spirit of the 1960s. For decades, speculation surrounded its inspiration. Some theorized Salvador Dalí’s influence. Others perpetuated legends about accident-deformed watches.

The truth, revealed in Francesca Cartier Brickell‘s “The Cartiers,” proves more intentional. Jean-Jacques Cartier and chief designer Rupert Emmerson deliberately reimagined the existing Maxi Oval, systematically distorting its form by pinching the ends and bending the case. This wasn’t accident. Pure artistry.

Extraordinary Rarity

Original Cartier London Crash watches remain impossibly scarce. Estimates suggest fewer than a dozen originals were produced between 1967 and 1970. This 1987 example is believed to be one of only three produced that year.

The watch retains its original gold deployant buckle. Both case and buckle bear London hallmarks for 1987. Such complete provenance significantly enhances its historical importance and market value.

Horological Treasures

Beyond the Crash, the collection spans Cartier’s most sought-after models. The Tank Asymétrique transforms the traditional rectangular case by twisting it to an oblique angle. Originally introduced in 1936 as the Parallélogramme, this modernist expression allowed wearers to read time at an angle, perfect for when the wrist was positioned on a table or steering wheel.

The Cartier Decagonal, described in 1967 by Time Bazaar as offering the “big look of luxury in a 10-sided 18-carat gold watch,” appears in exceptional examples. Research has identified only five known examples from the market, all in men’s sizes. Like other innovative Cartier timepieces, these pieces showcase the brand’s willingness to challenge traditional watch design.

Driver’s watches represent fascinating early tool watches designed for automobile enthusiasts. These timepieces allowed drivers to read time without removing hands from the wheel.

Technical Innovation

The Cartier Octagonal pieces demonstrate London’s willingness to explore unconventional case shapes. These striking timepieces feature concealed lugs that allow geometric forms to dominate, while specially designed deployant buckles mirror the octagonal bezel shape.

The enamel pieces intrigue most. The Asymétrique with Blue Enamel from 1973-74 represents exceptional rarity. Research has identified only five Cartier London enamel watches from this era. These pieces emerged during the final phase of Bond Street’s most experimental period.

Baignoire London variations showcase the workshop’s flair for unique interpretations. Where traditional Baignoire cases pinch inwards at the ends, the London version stretches outwards, dramatically increasing the bezel’s surface area and creating exaggeratedly elongated Roman numerals.

Global Auction Strategy

Sotheby’s has crafted a sophisticated international approach, with sales across three major watch auction centers. Following the Hong Kong auction on 24th April, additional sales will occur in Geneva on 10th May and New York on 15th June.

This strategy reflects vintage Cartier’s global appeal and the importance of reaching collectors across different markets. Each auction features carefully selected highlights showcasing different aspects of Cartier’s creative evolution. For collectors seeking exceptional luxury timepieces, this represents an unprecedented opportunity.

Market Impact

This comprehensive collection represents a watershed moment for vintage Cartier. The £15 million+ expectation reflects not merely individual pieces, but the extraordinary rarity of assembling such complete representation in one collection.

For serious collectors, this offers a unique opportunity to acquire museum-quality pieces that may never again appear together. The emphasis on Cartier London pieces holds particular significance, given these experimental designs rank among the most innovative timepieces of the 20th century. Similar to other significant horological developments, these Cartier innovations continue to influence contemporary watch design.

“The Shapes of Cartier” transcends commercial auction. It celebrates artistic vision, technical innovation, and exceptional design’s enduring power. These remarkable timepieces carry the legacy of a house that consistently reimagined luxury watchmaking’s possibilities. For those acquiring pieces from this historic collection, they’ll own tangible fragments of design history that continue inspiring more than half a century after their creation.
