In the heart of Paris, art aficionados and collectors alike gathered to witness the grand spectacle of Christie’s Impressionist & Modern Art Week.

This highly anticipated event was not just an auction but a celebration of artistic mastery, featuring a curated selection of museum-quality works spanning four sales.

From the avant-garde brilliance of Man Ray dans la Collection Marion Meyer to the exquisite pieces from the Sam Josefowitz Collection, the week-long affair was a testament to the enduring legacy of Impressionism and modern art.

Market Solidity and Remarkable Sales

One of the defining characteristics of this Art Week was the market’s remarkable solidity. With an astonishing 96% of lots sold, the auctions surpassed all expectations, raking in a staggering €25.7 million across the four sales.

Pierre-Auguste Renoir (1841-1919)
Petit Bras De Seine À Argenteuil
Estimate: €200,000 – 300,000

What truly set this event apart was the sheer diversity of buyers it attracted, with passionate bidders hailing from over 44 countries, a testament to the global allure of these timeless masterpieces. Moreover, an impressive 51% of lots exceeded their high estimates, reflecting a robust market sentiment and an unwavering demand for quality art.

Celebrating Female Artists: Françoise Gilot’s Triumph

Amidst the auction’s fervent energy, a notable highlight was the reaffirmation of interest in female artists, epitomised by Françoise Gilot’s Le Concert Champêtre. This masterpiece not only achieved a new world auction record by fetching €1.3 million but also symbolised a shift in the art world’s recognition of women artists.

Gilot’s work, alongside Berthe Morisot’s La Petite Fille au Cheveux Blonds, which exceeded its estimate, served as a poignant reminder of the growing prominence of female voices in the art market.

Unveiling Unprecedented Collections and Record-breaking Sales

The auctions unveiled unprecedented collections, offering a rare glimpse into previously unseen works from private holdings. Pieces by renowned artists such as Pierre-Auguste Renoir and Alfred Sisley captivated collectors, while the emergence of Cubist artists like Albert Gleizes and Jean Metzinger added a fresh dimension to the proceedings.

Alfred Sisley (1839-1899)
Les Coteaux De La Celle, Après Saint-mammès
Estimate: €400,000 – 600,000

Andre Derain’s symbolic representation of Fauvism soared to €3.1 million, underscoring the enduring fascination with avant-garde movements. Moreover, the enthusiastic response from the public to pre-sale exhibitions further cemented the significance of these artistic treasures.

Surrealist Treasures and the Enduring Legacy of Man Ray

Surrealist works took centre stage, captivating audiences with their enigmatic charm. Victor Brauner’s pieces tripled their estimates, reflecting a renewed interest in the surrealist movement. However, it was Man Ray who stole the spotlight, reaffirming his status as one of the most iconic figures of the surrealist movement.

The sale of Man Ray dans la Collection de Marion Meyer exceeded all expectations, sparking fiercely contested bidding wars that far surpassed initial estimations.

Notable highlights included autograph letters signed to Man Ray on “MoUvEmEnT DADA” headed paper, which fetched ten times their high estimate, and serigraphy of Le Violon d’Ingres, which doubled its high estimate to sell for €120,000.

A Record-breaking Triumph

A standout moment during the auctions was the record-breaking sale of Opus 8, Construction mécanique ou L’Usine de papiers peints by Belgian artist Victor Servranckx. This remarkable piece, from a French collection, quadrupled its initial estimate, setting a new world record for the artist at an impressive €403,200.

Françoise Gilot (1921-2023)
Concert On The Green (Le Concert Champêtre), 1953
Estimate: €200,000 – 300,000

Another noteworthy success was witnessed with Le Recueillement, a pre-symbolist masterpiece by Pierre Puvis de Chavannes. Surpassing its estimate by more than ninefold, this captivating work achieved one of the most spectacular results of the week at €277,200.

Enriching Cultural Heritage

Several works found their way into the collections of esteemed museums, further enriching our cultural heritage. Notable acquisitions include Alfred Sisley’s Les Coteaux de La Celle, après Saint-Mammès, Pierre Puvis de Chavannes’ Le recueillement, and Albert Marquet’s Paris, Quai de Conti.

In conclusion, Christie’s Impressionist & Modern Art Week in Paris was an unparalleled success, showcasing the enduring allure and invaluable significance of these timeless masterpieces.
