Indelible images of the west by the famed painter Thomas Moran led Christie’s sale of works assembled by the renowned connoisseur and environmentalist, Carl Knobloch. Stewards of the West: The Knobloch Collection achieved a total of more than $21 million. As a whole, the collection sold 94% by value and 112% hammer above the low estimate.

The top three lots in the sale were by Moran. Castle Rock, Green River, Wyoming (Indian Summer. Green River. Wyoming) led the sale, bringing $2,700,000; Grand Canyon, Colorado River more than doubled its high estimate to bring $2,340,000; A Passing Shower in the Yellowstone Cañon sold for $1,740,000.

Other notable works included John Trumbull’s depiction of George Washington, which brought $1,620,000, and George Catlin’s classic view of life on the plains,  Buffalo Chase, A Surround by the Hidatsa, which achieved $1,197,000.

“It has been an honor to offer Carl Knobloch’s collection, which expresses his love and his care for America’s natural beauty. The majestic landscapes and dramatic moments depicted in these works are part of our nation’s heritage. It is a source of great satisfaction that the proceeds of this sale will support organizations that contribute to the ongoing conservation and broader appreciation of these landscapes.”
