At Maison Assouline in London, where literary excellence meets cultural sophistication, an extraordinary evening unfolded on 19 March 2026. De Beers, partnering with Sotheby’s, unveiled The Jwaneng 28.88, a flawless diamond that captures millions of years of geological artistry and human craftsmanship.

The 28.88-carat stone draws its name from Botswana’s legendary Jwaneng Mine, where “Jwaneng” means “a place of small stones” in Setswana. An ironic name for a mine that produces such exceptional treasures.

A Celebration of Natural Wonder

The exclusive gathering attracted luminaries including Archie Madekwe, Nathalie Emmanuel, Poppy Ajudha, and Poppy Delevingne. But beyond the stellar guest list lay something more profound: a celebration of how precious stones and artistic expression have shaped our understanding of love, commitment, and permanence.

The unveiling coincided with the launch of De Beers’ landmark publication, “A Diamond Is Forever , The Making of a Cultural Icon,” published by Assouline. This marks not only the centenary of De Beers’ storytelling legacy in 2026 but sets the stage for the 80th anniversary of the iconic phrase “A Diamond Is Forever” in 2027.

The internally flawless, D-colour diamond carries an estimated value of 2.2 to 2.8 million USD. Its journey began millions of years ago, deep within the Earth’s mantle, before volcanic eruptions carried it toward the surface beneath what is now the Kalahari Desert.

From Rough Stone to Flawless Brilliance

Cut from a substantial 114.83-carat rough diamond, The Jwaneng 28.88 underwent months of study and planning by De Beers’ master specialists. These artisans employed their expertise to unlock the gem’s maximum potential whilst preserving its natural beauty and structural integrity.

The result is a masterpiece. A flawless round brilliant classified as Type IIa, representing the rarest and most chemically pure category of natural diamond. These exceptional stones account for fewer than two percent of all diamonds discovered.

“The Jwaneng 28.88 is a perfect emblem of De Beers’ unmatched legacy in diamonds. It’s at once a vanishingly rare feat of nature, combined with a masterclass in diamond cutting and polishing. Natural diamonds truly are forever and I cannot think of a better stone to symbolise this special collaboration,” said Quig Bruning, Sotheby’s Head of Jewels Americas and EMEA.

Art and Diamonds in Dialogue

The evening featured a specially curated exhibition by Sophie Oppenheimer, exploring the dynamic dialogue between diamonds and artistic expression throughout history. This curation traced how diamonds have been imagined, reinterpreted, and immortalised through various artistic mediums across different eras.

The exhibition showcased archival advertising works that became cultural touchstones, including “The Miracle of Love” (1955) and “Treasures of the Heart” (1956) by Pierre Ino, alongside Bernard Lamotte‘s evocative “How Far Its Beam” (1943). These historical pieces engaged in conversation with seminal artworks such as Patrick Caulfield‘s “Engagement Ring” (1963), Edward J. Burra‘s “Spanish Music Hall” (1932), and Vik Muniz‘s portrait of Rita Hayworth.

This artistic dialogue revealed how diamonds transcend their material value to represent deeper human emotions and aspirations. The exhibition demonstrated that diamonds occupy a unique space in cultural consciousness, simultaneously representing luxury, permanence, and the ineffable qualities of human connection.

A Century of Jewellery Evolution

Guests were treated to an exclusive showcase of pieces from De Beers London, charting the stylistic evolution of diamond jewellery throughout the past century. This retrospective journey illuminated changing aesthetic preferences whilst highlighting the enduring appeal of expertly crafted diamond pieces.

The presentation culminated with contemporary jewellery featuring Desert diamond stones, displayed in both rough and polished forms. This juxtaposition offered visitors a rare opportunity to appreciate the dramatic transformation these natural treasures undergo, much like the historic Codognato Venice Jewellery House pieces that showcase centuries of craftsmanship.

The Making of a Cultural Icon

The launch of “A Diamond Is Forever , The Making of a Cultural Icon” celebrates more than a publishing milestone. It honours one of the most enduring phrases in modern culture. First coined in 1947 by American copywriter Mary Frances Gerety, this simple yet profound statement has shaped romantic traditions and luxury aspirations for nearly eight decades.

The phrase emerged during a transformative period in advertising and consumer culture, yet its resonance has only deepened with time.

The Science of Perfection

Type IIa diamonds, such as The Jwaneng 28.88, contain virtually no nitrogen impurities, resulting in their remarkable clarity and colourless appearance. The scientific rarity of Type IIa diamonds adds another layer of significance, positioning it among the most coveted natural diamonds in existence.

The Jwaneng 28.88 achieves the highest possible grades in colour (D) and clarity (internally flawless), whilst its expert cut maximises the stone’s natural brilliance and fire.

The Journey to Hong Kong

The Jwaneng 28.88 will make its auction debut at Sotheby’s Live High Jewellery Sale in Hong Kong on 23 April 2026. This prestigious venue proves fitting for such an exceptional stone, as Hong Kong has established itself as a premier destination for luxury auctions, particularly those featuring rare gemstones and jewellery.

The auction will feature The Jwaneng 28.88 alongside additional De Beers diamonds from the same mine, creating a cohesive narrative of origin and excellence. Each stone carries its own story whilst contributing to a larger tale of geological wonder, human artistry, and the enduring appeal of natural diamonds.

Timeless Appeal

In an era of technological advancement and synthetic alternatives, natural diamonds maintain their unique position in luxury markets and cultural consciousness. The geological timeline required to create stones like The Jwaneng 28.88, measured in millions of years, imbues them with a sense of permanence and authenticity that resonates deeply with collectors and connoisseurs.

As The Jwaneng 28.88 prepares for its auction debut, it carries forward multiple legacies: geological, artistic, and cultural. The approaching 80th anniversary of “A Diamond Is Forever” provides an opportunity to reflect on how this phrase has shaped romantic traditions and cultural expressions, much like how Sotheby’s historic Abu Dhabi debut demonstrated the enduring global appeal of exceptional luxury items.

The exclusive preview at Maison Assouline offered a rare glimpse into this world where geological time meets human artistry, where natural rarity encounters cultural significance, and where the ancient phrase “A Diamond Is Forever” continues to resonate with new generations.
