Mark’s Club, the venerable Mayfair institution, has recently reopened its doors following an extensive and meticulous refurbishment, blending classic British charm with modern luxury.

The grand reopening, which took place on Tuesday, 24th September, marked a new chapter in the storied history of one of the capital’s most exclusive private members’ clubs.

A Legacy of Sophistication

Since its inception in 1972, Mark’s Club has stood as a bastion of British refinement, offering a sophisticated alternative to the traditional gentlemen’s clubs of St James’s.

Now, under the discerning eye of Richard Caring, the club has undergone a transformation that has elevated its offerings whilst preserving its quintessential British character.

The renovation process, overseen personally by Caring, was a delicate balancing act. The challenge lay in modernising the club’s amenities without compromising the timeless elegance that has been its hallmark for over half a century.

The result is a seamless blend of tradition and contemporary luxury that has already begun to delight both long-standing members and newcomers alike.

A Grand Entrance Reimagined

As members now step through the discreet portal on Charles Street, they are greeted by a familiar yet refreshed reception area. The introduction of classic oak flooring, which now runs throughout every level of the club, immediately sets the tone for the refined experience that awaits.


One of the most striking additions to the entrance is a magnificent George Stubbs painting, which now commands pride of place.

This masterpiece is flanked by the beloved Mark’s Club clock, an English Fusse from the 1900s, creating a visual dialogue between old and new that encapsulates the ethos of the refurbishment.

The Living Room: A Light-Filled Sanctuary

Perhaps the most dramatic transformation can be seen in the ground floor’s new open-plan layout. The Living Room area has been reimagined as a light-filled sanctuary that manages to maintain an intimate atmosphere despite its more open design.

The uncovering of an original fireplace during renovations has provided a focal point for this plush, comfortable space. The fireplace serves as both a literal and figurative hearth, around which members can gather in an environment that feels both grand and homely.

The room’s decor pays homage to the club’s heritage, with walls adorned in a bespoke iteration of a Morris & Co print that will evoke fond memories for long-term members. Culinary Excellence: The Dining Room and Greenhouse

The addition of the Greenhouse is perhaps the most exciting development in Mark’s Club’s culinary landscape. This tranquil space, seating up to 22 guests, has been designed to evoke the charm of a quintessential English greenhouse.

With its retractable glass ceiling and abundance of potted and hanging plants, it offers a unique dining environment that adapts to the whims of the British weather.

In warmer months, the fully retractable ceiling allows for al fresco dining under the London sky. As temperatures cool, the space transforms into a cosy retreat where members can enjoy hearty fare like Beef Fillet and Fish & Chips beside a warming central fireplace.

The versatility of the Greenhouse extends beyond its adaptable architecture. Plans are afoot to introduce an afternoon tea service, promising to make this verdant space a year-round destination for members seeking a moment of repose in the heart of Mayfair.

A Toast to Tradition: The Bar and Drawing Room

Ascending to the First Floor, members will discover the refreshed Bar, where tradition meets innovation in liquid form. Under the expert guidance of Mark’s Club’s Head Bartender, a carefully curated cocktail menu awaits, blending classic favourites with experimental new creations.

Signature drinks such as the Mark’s Margarita and Mayfair Swizzle promise to become new classics, while the polished wooden bar provides an inviting perch for those wishing to observe the mixologists at work.

For those seeking a more relaxed atmosphere, the adjoining Drawing Room offers a less formal setting for socialising and unwinding. The Second Floor’s Games Room, with its intimate charm and backgammon sets, remains a cherished feature, providing a playful counterpoint to the club’s more formal spaces.

The Terrace: A Haven for Cigar Aficionados

The First Floor Terrace has been reimagined as the epicentre of Mark’s Club’s renowned cigar programme. Here, members can indulge in a carefully curated selection of rare, vintage, and collectable cigars, with origins spanning decades, brands, and countries.

To ensure that members can fully appreciate this exceptional offering, sommeliers are on hand at all times to guide selections and provide expert advice. The installation of 70 state-of-the-art keeps in the top-floor Humidor underscores the club’s commitment to maintaining the highest standards in cigar preservation.

The Terrace also offers a more relaxed dining option, with a curated menu that allows members to enjoy everything from Exmoor Caviar to Petit Fours in an al fresco setting.
