The superyacht industry finds itself at a crossroads where environmental responsibility and luxury must work together. Dutch shipyard Heesen Yachts has delivered their response: the 50-metre hybrid superyacht Orion, launched in June 2025. This vessel cuts through the usual compromises between sustainability and performance.

After rigorous sea trials in North Sea conditions, Orion delivered on every promise. She’s the third in Heesen’s 50-metre Fast Displacement Hull Form aluminium series with hybrid propulsion, and she sets new standards for what eco-conscious yachting can accomplish.

Hybrid Propulsion Meets Luxury Design

Orion’s hybrid propulsion system enables silent cruising up to 10 knots while slashing fuel consumption and emissions. Years of research and development produced this technology, positioning the yacht at the forefront of sustainable luxury boating, much like how Sanlorenzo’s innovative designs redefine naval architecture.

The environmental credentials are impressive without sacrifice. In hybrid mode at 10 knots, Orion burns just 45 litres per hour. This efficiency actually improves performance rather than limiting it.

Jeroen van der Meer captures the vessel’s significance: “This yacht perfectly encapsulates our DNA: precision Dutch engineering, innovative hybrid technology, and the ability to deliver a high-quality product through dedicated collaboration with owners, designers and our team of experts.”

Engineering Precision and Performance

Orion’s specifications read like a masterclass in modern yacht design. Built entirely from lightweight aluminium using the Fast Displacement Hull Form developed by van Oossanen and engineered by Heesen’s in-house team, she represents cutting-edge naval architecture.

Two MTU 12V 2000 M61 (IMO III) engines power the yacht to a top speed of 16.3 knots while maintaining exceptional fuel efficiency. More impressive still: Orion achieves a transatlantic range of 3,750 nautical miles at 12 knots, consuming just 98 litres per hour excluding hotel load.

Peter van der Zanden, Head of Engineering at Heesen Yachts, explains the significance: “Our expertise in lightweight aluminium construction, combined with the efficiency of the Fast Displacement Hull Form and the advanced hybrid propulsion system make Orion an exceptional yacht. This synergy doesn’t just result in reduced environmental impact and enhanced longevity for the yacht’s components; it delivers an unparalleled experience for the owners , quiet, efficient, and versatile cruising, allowing them to explore diverse destinations with ease and comfort. Orion is a perfect example of Heesen’s commitment to marrying performance, efficiency, and luxury.”

Global Cruising Without Compromise

Orion’s practical advantages extend to her cruising versatility. With a shallow draft of just 2.15 metres, the yacht accesses waters that remain off-limits to many vessels of comparable size. This Bahamas-friendly design opens up possibilities from Caribbean shallows to Mediterranean coastlines, similar to how AB Yachts’ AB110 superyacht prioritizes performance and accessibility.

Combined with her impressive range and efficiency, Orion becomes the ideal vessel for owners who want environmental responsibility without sacrificing the freedom to explore remote destinations.

Exterior Design by Frank Laupman

The exterior design comes from Frank Laupman of Omega Architects, whose vision creates a vessel that’s both striking and timeless. Orion’s most distinctive feature is her dramatic vertical bow, which delivers powerful visual impact while contributing to exceptional seakeeping abilities and efficiency.

Laupman‘s philosophy extends beyond aesthetics to embrace functionality. The expansive floor-to-ceiling windows create visual continuity between interior and exterior spaces while flooding interiors with natural light, enhancing the sense of space and connection to the seascape.

The yacht’s sleek profile maintains contemporary elegance while incorporating subtle elements that hint at her advanced hybrid technology. Every line has been considered to optimise both aesthetic appeal and performance efficiency.

Interior Craftsmanship by Cristiano Gatto

Orion’s interior represents a collaboration between Heesen’s engineering excellence and designer Cristiano Gatto‘s creative vision. Working with Heesen’s engineers and craftspeople, Gatto has created a canvas that allows owners to express their creativity while maintaining sophisticated standards.

The interior displays Dutch quality craftsmanship through over 37 different materials. Italian marble takes centre stage, complemented by high-gloss woods and sumptuous woven leather that adds warmth throughout the vessel.

Gatto‘s approach extended beyond fixed elements. He created bespoke loose furniture specifically tailored to match the owner’s vision and lifestyle, ensuring every aspect of the yacht’s interior reflects their personal taste and requirements.

Accommodation and Guest Experience

Despite maintaining sub-500GT status, Orion maximises her 499 GT interior volume to accommodate twelve guests across six staterooms. This achievement in space planning demonstrates Heesen’s expertise in creating vessels that feel larger than their technical specifications suggest.

The main deck owner’s stateroom offers luxury and convenience, positioning owners at the yacht’s heart while providing a private sanctuary with panoramic windows. The full-beam VIP suite provides guest accommodation of the highest standard. The remaining four guest cabins maintain the same attention to detail and luxury finishes found throughout.

Charter Availability

Orion is available for charter through Ocean Independence, providing an opportunity for clients to experience sustainable luxury yachting first-hand. This availability reflects growing demand from luxury travellers who seek experiences that align with their environmental values without compromising quality.

The decision to offer charter represents a shift in the luxury travel market, where sustainability has evolved from optional feature to essential requirement, much like how Sanlorenzo’s London showroom showcases the future of luxury yachting.

Industry Leadership and Innovation

Orion’s delivery reinforces Heesen’s position at the superyacht market forefront, demonstrating the shipyard’s capability to build complex, high-performance hybrid yachts with exceptional quality and design, delivered on schedule. The yacht represents more than another successful delivery, it embodies Heesen’s vision for luxury yachting’s future.

As environmental regulations become stricter and owners more environmentally conscious, vessels like Orion point the way forward for an industry in transition.

Environmental Impact and Sustainable Luxury

Orion’s environmental benefits extend beyond fuel savings. The yacht’s silent cruising capability up to 10 knots minimises noise pollution in sensitive marine environments, while reduced emissions contribute to cleaner air and water. These benefits represent a holistic approach to environmental responsibility.

Hybrid technology delivers practical benefits for owners and guests. Silent running capability improves the onboard experience, eliminating engine noise during anchoring and low-speed cruising. This creates a more serene environment while reducing the yacht’s impact on marine wildlife and other vessels.

The New Standard for Luxury Yachting

Orion represents a fundamental shift towards sustainable luxury without compromise. Through innovative engineering, exceptional design, and attention to detail, Heesen has created a vessel that redefines eco-conscious yachting possibilities.

The yacht’s success lies in how seamlessly technical specifications and luxurious accommodations integrate to create an experience that’s both environmentally responsible and utterly indulgent. For owners and guests aboard Orion, sustainability isn’t a restriction, it’s an enhancement that adds meaning to luxury travel.

Orion’s delivery marks a significant step forward for an industry committed to preserving the marine environments that make luxury yachting possible. She proves that the future of superyachting is both sustainable and spectacular.
