Heesen Yacht’s Project Orion combines cutting-edge engineering with eco-friendly materials to minimise environmental impact without compromising on opulence.

In a bold move towards a greener future for the superyacht industry, Dutch shipbuilder Heesen Yachts has unveiled its most environmentally conscious vessel to date: Project Orion.

This 50-metre hybrid yacht represents a significant milestone in Heesen’s commitment to sustainable luxury.

Heesen’s Project Orion – Hybrid Revolution

Project Orion, the third in Heesen’s 50-metre FDHF aluminium series with hybrid propulsion, is pushing the boundaries of sustainable yachting. Delivery is Q1 2025 and this incredible yacht showcases Heesen’s expertise in hybrid technology, a field they’ve been leading since 2017.

Mark Cavendish, chief commercial officer at Heesen, emphasises the company’s long-term vision: “Building yachts with a reduced environmental impact is part of our long-term strategy. Following the success of charter yacht Home, we see that increasingly more clients appreciate Heesen’s hybrid solutions, especially due to their quietness.”

The hybrid-electric propulsion system allows Project Orion to cruise silently, consuming only 45 litres of fuel per hour at speeds of up to 10 knots. This impressive efficiency represents a 30% reduction in fuel consumption compared to traditional diesel-powered motor yachts of similar size.

The Luxury of Silence

One of the most impressive features of Project Orion is its ability to be almost silent. In hybrid mode the noise level is 46 decibels – the sound of rain falling.

This remarkable quietness not only enhances the onboard experience for guests but also allows the yacht to move between locations without disturbing those on board.

The appeal of silent cruising has already won over discerning yacht owners. The recent delivery of Cinderella Noel IV, another Heesen hybrid yacht, exemplifies this trend. Its owner and family are currently exploring the fjords of Norway and Scandinavia, revelling in the tranquillity afforded by the hybrid propulsion system.

Design Excellence Meets Sustainability

Project Orion’s exterior design, crafted by Frank Laupman of Omega Architects, features a striking silhouette with a near-vertical bow and expansive floor-to-ceiling windows. This bold aesthetic not only turns heads but also maximises interior space and natural light.

Renowned Italian designer Cristiano Gatto has created a contemporary interior that seamlessly blends luxury with sustainability. Gatto explains his approach: “We conduct a lot of research into the materials we use. For example, we use leather that is certified by the food industry because it is a product that would otherwise be thrown away.”

The interior plans are designed to create “a cosy and comfortable luxury lifestyle on board” while adhering to the yacht’s sustainable focus. Potential owners have the opportunity to further personalise the interior, ensuring that Project Orion perfectly aligns with their tastes and values.

Standout Features

Project Orion boasts an array of impressive amenities that set it apart from other superyachts in its class:

  1. Expansive Swim Platform: The yacht features a generously sized swim platform that seamlessly connects to a well-equipped sauna and gym area. This thoughtful design allows guests to move effortlessly between water activities and wellness spaces.
  2. Sun-soaked Deck: The expansive sundeck provides ample space for outdoor relaxation and entertainment. Whether guests prefer basking in the sun or enjoying alfresco dining, this versatile area caters to all preferences.
  3. Master Suite: The crown jewel of Project Orion is undoubtedly its master suite. Flooded with natural light thanks to floor-to-ceiling windows, this spacious retreat offers unparalleled views and a sense of connection with the surrounding seascape.

Commitment to Environmental Transparency

Heesen’s dedication to sustainability extends beyond the design and construction of their yachts. The company has taken a pioneering step by adopting the Yacht Environmental Transparency Index (YETI), a comprehensive methodology that evaluates a yacht’s environmental impact across more than 30 different criteria.

By embracing YETI, Heesen demonstrates its commitment to transparency and continuous improvement in reducing the ecological footprint of its vessels. This move not only sets a new standard for the industry but also provides potential owners with valuable insights into the environmental performance of their yachts.

The Future of Sustainable Yachting

Project Orion represents more than just a new addition to Heesen’s fleet; it symbolises the future of sustainable luxury yachting. As the industry faces increasing pressure to reduce its environmental impact, innovations like those found in Project Orion are likely to become the new norm.

The success of previous Heesen hybrid yachts, such as Home, which gained fame on the TV reality show Below Deck, demonstrates the growing market demand for eco-friendly superyachts. These vessels prove that luxury and sustainability can coexist, offering owners the best of both worlds.

Conclusion

As Project Orion prepares to make waves in the superyacht world, it stands as a testament to Heesen’s innovative spirit and commitment to sustainable luxury. By combining state-of-the-art hybrid technology, thoughtful design, and a dedication to environmental transparency, Heesen is not just building a yacht, they’re shaping the future of the industry.

For those seeking the pinnacle of luxury yachting with a conscience, Project Orion offers an unparalleled opportunity. As she sets sail in 2025, this remarkable vessel will undoubtedly inspire a new generation of eco-friendly superyachts, proving that the journey towards sustainability can be as luxurious as it is responsible.
