The United Kingdom is in mourning today following the news that Her Majesty The Queen has died at the age of 96.
Buckingham Palace made the announcement this evening, saying that “Her Majesty passed away peacefully at her residence in Balmoral.”
The flags at Buckingham Palace and Holyroodhouse have been lowered to half-mast as well as many of the official buildings throughout the country.
The news of The Queen’s death will come as a shock to many, as she had appeared in good health recently while meeting with the new prime Minister Liz Truss.
Her Majesty has been the longest-reigning monarch, surpassing the previous record set by her great-great-grandmother, Queen Victoria
A period of national mourning will now take place, with plans for a state funeral to be announced in due course. Prime Minister Liz truss is expected to make a statement shortly.
