Your skin is one of the most important factors in how well you age. Appearing younger starts by avoiding the sagging and wrinkling of our skin, which begins when it loses its elasticity and strength over time.
While our genes control our intrinsic ageing, or how thin and dry our skin becomes, we can control some of the impacts of this ageing with the right behaviours. Here we look at ways you can get younger-looking skin.
Protect Your Skin From The Sun
We are used to applying SPF products in the summer and likely do this every day to protect from sunburn. However, even the more moderate sun of the spring can cause our skin to dry out more and open us to the possibility of skin cancer.
Consequently, it is good to seek shade or wear light clothing to cover the skin. Where this isn’t possible, wearing a broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher lotion, which is water-resistant, is essential. The sun does most of the ageing we see in our faces, so creating a barrier is essential.
If you think that you look younger when you are tanned, you might want to rethink your approach. Long hours baking on a lounger will create premature ageing. Therefore, if you want to look tanned, you need to use lotions that achieve the same effect. Indoor tanning equipment emits harmful UV rays and accelerates how old your skin looks.
Our bodies are 60% water, and our skin is more than this. If we do not keep topping ourselves up with water, some 8 glasses a day, we will see the effects on how old we look. A lack of fluid in the skin causes it to lose its elasticity and start to sag, making the lines of your face look more pronounced. Equally, dry skin loses some of the lustre of youth. Therefore, drinking more water is an essential behaviour for younger-looking skin.
What goes into our bodies is a direct influence on how it functions. While this seems common sense, many of us do not extrapolate from this what it means we should be doing to feel and look better. Eating plenty of fruit and vegetable will help prevent some of the damage of ageing.
Diets with lots of sugar or refined carbs cause accelerated ageing, as is drinking lots of alcohol.
While feeling young is about having fun, looking young requires a more balanced approach to life.
Lines appear where we repeatedly use the same muscles in our faces. On one level, these lines represent our character in our face and are part of who we are. However, we can avoid some wrinkles on the forehead and around the eyes by wearing sunglasses to prevent squinting. Equally, if you find yourself straining to see when reading, you might want to get your eyes tested and wear contacts or glasses.
Exercise Most Days… But Wash Away The Sweat
Moderate exercise every day improves your circulation and boosts your immune system, contributing to healthier, younger-looking skin. Sweating can also remove toxins from your body, but it can lead to irritation if left, especially when wearing a hat. Consequently, you need to wash away the sweat soon after finishing your exercise.
Cleansing is essential for keeping your skin healthy, and washing your face twice daily is part of the skincare routine.
Develop A Gentle Skin Routine
A basic cleansing and moisturising routine can do a lot to keep your youthful looks. A gentle cleanser to remove makeup, pollution, and other dirt from the skin reduces the chances of irritation that causes ageing. However, a too stringent cleanser or anything that involves excessive scrubbing can also lead to irritation. Therefore, choose your product wisely.
If your skin burns or stings when using products, stop, as this irritates the derma and may make you look older. When using products offered by a GP or dermatologist, there may be some stinging or burning, which is a normal function of the product. Speak to your GP about this to ensure the topical cream is working in your best interests.
Maintaining a youthful veneer is unsurprisingly linked to living a balanced life. Exercising, drinking water, and a healthy balanced diet are all factors in keeping skin looking younger. Activities like smoking, drinking and excessive exposure to the sun, while wonderful at the time, are counter to youthful skin. Look after yourself, and your body will look after you!
