An Artist Beyond Boundaries

Anton Corbijn, the Dutch artist extraordinaire, has made an indelible mark in the realms of photography, filmmaking, and creative direction. His illustrious career began as a music photographer in the Netherlands, and he later ventured into the vibrant landscape of London in the late Seventies.

Over the decades, Corbijn’s distinctive style has become instantly recognisable, gracing the iconic images of luminaries like David Bowie, Miles Davis, Joy Division, Gerhard Richter, Marlene Dumas, Bruce Springsteen, Tom Waits, and many more. However, his influence extends beyond individual portraits; he played a pivotal role in shaping the visual and creative identity of two of the most celebrated bands in music history, Depeche Mode and U2.

Corbijn’s cover artwork for U2‘s albums “The Joshua Tree” (1987) and “Achtung Baby” (1991) stands as timeless, visual representations of the music contained within. Not content with still photography, he has ventured into directing, creating award-winning films such as “Control” (2007), “The American” (2010) starring George Clooney, and “A Most Wanted Man” (2014) featuring Philip Seymour Hoffman.

When asked about his style, Corbijn humbly states, “I didn’t have an education in photography, so I’m just making do with what I have. Technique is low on my list, and I can’t say I have mastered anything. You find ways to make something if you don’t have all the possibilities. I learned that from Brian Eno, actually.” His approach is about maximizing creativity with limited resources and reducing choices to become inventive with what remains.

A Creative Collaboration with Lamborghini

Lamborghini was eager to embrace Corbijn’s unique approach when it came to interpreting the highly anticipated Revuelto. This masterpiece, marking Lamborghini’s 60th anniversary, boasts a carbon fibre ‘monofuselage’ and a design that pushes the boundaries of automotive aesthetics. Beneath its striking exterior, the Revuelto houses a 6.5-litre V12 engine, complemented by three electric motors, resulting in a staggering total power output of 1,015CV. It’s the epitome of state-of-the-art engineering in Sant’Agata Bolognese, a combination that left Corbijn awestruck.

“Lamborghini represents sophistication in cars. It is a beautiful, sophisticated, and chic name for any product,” Corbijn remarks. The choice of the Dolomite mountains as the backdrop for the photoshoot was no accident. It was a deliberate decision to set the car against the backdrop of nature, making it appear like a magnificent, foreign entity within the forest, poised to burst forth with boundless energy.

Corbijn explains, “Nature is fantastic to work in but it’s very difficult because nature is usually so beautiful it takes over. The car balances out the beauty of the forest with the visual power of the car. I’m a Taurus myself, so I appreciate the roots of the Revuelto’s name. The car is a sculpture and yet it moves damn fast.”

For Corbijn, establishing a personal connection with his subject is paramount. He works swiftly and remains steadfast in adhering to the values embodied by Lamborghini: transcending limits with courage and authenticity.

“I try to keep authenticity in my work. It’s really difficult because visuals are very popular, and everyone is a photographer now, so it’s difficult to make your mark. But that’s why you should really stick to your own thing,” Corbijn asserts. He operates with a documentary-style approach, eschewing the conventional nine-to-five routine. “My work in the beginning was very brave because nobody really liked it. You have to believe in yourself and keep doing it. Plus, I had no idea what else to do.”

As Lamborghini celebrates its legacy with the Revuelto, Anton Corbijn’s collaboration adds a layer of artistic grandeur to this automotive masterpiece. Through his lens, the car transcends mere mechanics, becoming a work of art that echoes the essence of Lamborghini’s relentless pursuit of excellence.
