Set within 240 acres of ancient woodland overlooking the River Clyde, Mar Hall Golf & Spa Resort has long been a jewel in Scotland’s hospitality crown. Originally designed in 1828 by Sir Robert Smirke, the visionary architect behind London’s British Museum, this grand estate has evolved from a private residence to a 5-star hotel and golf resort.
Now, under the stewardship of Dubai-based Dutco Group and investment firm Align Partners, Mar Hall is undergoing a £15 million renovation set to redefine luxury hospitality in Scotland. Slated for completion in spring 2025, the project promises to honour the estate’s storied heritage while introducing cutting-edge amenities for today’s discerning travellers.
Spearheaded by Glasgow-based design studio Graven, the overhaul spans every corner of the property, from guest rooms to public spaces. The renovation follows Mar Hall’s 2024 acquisition by Dutco Group, which has integrated the resort into its elite portfolio of global properties, including hotels in Dubai, the Maldives, and Seychelles.
With a focus on blending Victorian grandeur with contemporary sophistication, the redesign aims to elevate Mar Hall’s status as a destination for both leisure and high-profile events.
Design Philosophy: Bridging Heritage and Innovation
“We approached Mar Hall’s renovation with a deep respect for the building’s storied past, while reimagining its spaces to meet the expectations of today’s luxury travellers,” explains Lisa King, Design Director at Align Partners. “The transformed Mar Hall blends timeless elegance with a standout contemporary design, allowing guests to experience the hotel’s legacy and surroundings in new, inspiring ways.” This philosophy is evident in Graven’s collaboration with renowned Glasgow studios Timorous Beasties, Art Pistol, and Elegant Clutter, who have crafted bespoke furnishings and curated art to reflect Scotland’s cultural richness.
The redesign pays meticulous attention to architectural integrity. Original features, such as the Victorian-era “porte cochère” (carriage porch), have been preserved and enhanced. Meanwhile, modern additions like a 24-person private cinema and a gaming room inject a fresh vibrancy into the estate. The result is a harmonious balance between historical reverence and forward-thinking luxury, ensuring Mar Hall remains a beacon of Scottish hospitality for generations.
Grand Arrival: The Reimagined Entrance & Reception
Guests arriving at Mar Hall will first encounter the meticulously restored porte cochère, a nod to the estate’s 19th-century origins. This architectural marvel now leads into a reception area adorned with black-and-white marble floors, brushed bronze accents, and a central chandelier that commands attention.
Textured velvets and botanical motifs in the décor echo the surrounding woodlands, creating an immediate connection to the natural landscape.
The reception’s design intentionally mirrors the grandeur of Victorian-era manor houses while incorporating modern functionality. A dedicated concierge desk and streamlined check-in process ensure efficiency without compromising the space’s opulent aesthetic. This area sets the tone for the entire resort, offering a glimpse of the meticulous craftsmanship that defines the renovation.
Luxury Redefined: The Bedrooms & Suites
Mar Hall’s 74 redesigned guest rooms and suites cater to diverse preferences, ranging from intimate 25m² retreats to sprawling 115m² Grand Suites. Each space features botanical wallpaper, curved contours, and warm-toned palettes inspired by the estate’s woodland setting. Ensuite bathrooms have been upgraded with marble finishes and state-of-the-art fixtures, ensuring a seamless blend of comfort and elegance.
The eight Junior Suites and three Grand Suites offer distinct personalities. Smaller suites prioritise cosy intimacy with soft textures and muted hues, while the Grand Suites boast panoramic views of the Clyde and Kilpatrick Hills.
Custom-designed furniture by Timorous Beasties adds a whimsical touch, with patterns reflecting Scotland’s flora and fauna. Every room balances privacy and connectivity, with discreet smart technology integrated into the vintage-inspired design.
The Long Gallery: A Vibrant Social Hub
At the heart of Mar Hall lies the transformed Long Gallery, a soaring space that serves as the resort’s social nucleus. Floor-to-ceiling windows frame views of the estate’s manicured gardens, while a central bar crafted from locally sourced oak invites guests to linger. The gallery’s eclectic art collection, curated by Art Pistol, features works from emerging Scottish artists, creating a dynamic dialogue between tradition and modernity.
This versatile area adapts effortlessly to events, from corporate gatherings to intimate weddings. By day, it functions as a serene lounge where guests sip coffee amid sunlight-dappled interiors. By night, the space transforms into a glamorous venue, with bespoke lighting highlighting its architectural details. The Long Gallery epitomises Mar Hall’s dual identity as both a tranquil retreat and a vibrant events destination.
Culinary Excellence: Bar, Restaurant & Private Dining
The resort’s dining spaces have been reimagined to cater to epicurean tastes. The main restaurant, located at the Long Gallery’s terminus, offers panoramic hill views and a menu celebrating Scotland’s seasonal produce. Its design,a fusion of Victorian-inspired mouldings and sleek, contemporary furniture, creates an ambiance of understated sophistication.
Local whisky and craft 1 take centre stage at the redesigned bar, where brass finishes and leather upholstery evoke a refined, club-like atmosphere.
For exclusive gatherings, a new private dining room introduces theatrical flair. Featuring a bespoke crystal chandelier and a custom banquet table, this space accommodates up to 20 guests for curated tasting menus. Meanwhile, the al fresco reading room and fire-pit area in the gardens provide unconventional settings for twilight drinks or casual suppers beneath the stars.
Exclusive Retreat: The Members’ Lounge
A highlight for Mar Hall’s loyal patrons, the redesigned Members’ Lounge channels the cosy grandeur of a manor house library. Bold navy walls contrast with warm walnut shelving, displaying a curated selection of books and Scottish artefacts. Plush armchairs flank a marble fireplace, creating an inviting space for quiet reflection or informal meetings.
This members-only enclave also hosts small-scale events, from whisky tastings to author talks. Its design balances exclusivity with accessibility, ensuring a sense of belonging for returning guests. Soft lighting and acoustic panelling enhance the lounge’s intimate vibe, making it a favoured spot for both relaxation and connection.
Wellness Reimagined: Spa & Leisure Facilities
Mar Hall’s spa has been elevated into a holistic wellness destination. The 20-metre heated pool, surrounded by loungers and steam rooms, remains a cornerstone, now complemented by a state-of-the-art gym featuring PRIMAL Performance Series equipment. Treatment rooms offer bespoke therapies using locally sourced ingredients, from heather-infused massages to seaweed facials.
New wellness programmes cater to holistic health, including guided forest bathing in the ancient woodlands and sunrise yoga sessions overlooking the Clyde. The spa’s design emphasises tranquility, with muted tones, natural materials, and indirect lighting creating a sanctuary for rejuvenation.
Revitalised Grounds: Landscape Design & Eco Initiatives
Head Landscaper Wayne Simon Page has redefined Mar Hall’s outdoor spaces with themed gardens that honour the estate’s history. Restored fountain pools and new maze gardens coexist with eco-conscious additions like bee-friendly flowerbeds and wildlife viewing stations. The sunken fire-pit area and al fresco reading nook offer secluded spots to immerse in nature.
Sustainability underpins every change. Over 1,000 native trees have been planted to enhance biodiversity, while rainwater harvesting systems irrigate the gardens. These initiatives align with Mar Hall’s commitment to achieving net-zero operations by 2030, ensuring the estate’s beauty endures for future generations.
A New Chapter for Scottish Hospitality
With room rates starting from £245 per night, the transformed Mar Hall Golf & Spa Resort is poised to reclaim its status as Scotland’s premier luxury destination. By marrying its rich heritage with innovative design and sustainable practices, the estate offers a blueprint for 21st-century hospitality.
Whether seeking a serene escape, a round on its championship golf course, or a lavish event venue, Mar Hall promises an experience as timeless as the Clyde itself.
