Art and gastronomy meet in their most sophisticated expression yet at Marcel, a French-continental restaurant that opened within Sotheby’s prestigious headquarters in New York’s legendary Breuer Building. This extraordinary dining destination, created through collaboration between the world’s leading auction house and acclaimed design firm Roman and Williams, presents a revolutionary concept where masterpiece artworks rotate alongside exquisite cuisine in one of Manhattan’s most architecturally significant spaces.

A Culinary Milestone on Madison Avenue

Marcel opened at 945 Madison Avenue on 16 April 2026, occupying a unique position within one of the world’s leading art destinations. Diners experience museum-quality masterworks while savoring elevated French cuisine.

“The opening of Marcel marks another milestone in what has become a defining chapter for Sotheby’s in New York since our move to the Breuer last year. The restaurant adds a new dimension to the Sotheby’s experience, where our clients and friends can enjoy our exhibitions and an exceptional meal in a beautiful setting,” explains Charles F. Stewart, Sotheby’s Chief Executive Officer.

The concept extends beyond traditional restaurant offerings. Guests dine surrounded by rotating exhibitions featuring works from legendary artists including Joan Mitchell, Andy Warhol, Alexander Calder, and François-Xavier and Claude Lalanne. Curated vitrines display exceptional jewelry and natural history curiosities throughout the space.

Architectural Heritage Meets Contemporary Design

The restaurant honors Marcel Breuer, the architect behind the building that originally housed the Whitney Museum of American Art from 1966 until its relocation. Roman and Williams, led by co-founder Robin Alesch, created a space that both contrasts with and complements Breuer’s brutalist masterpiece.

“Marcel is the culmination of decades of work at the intersection of architecture, craft, art and hospitality. At the Breuer, we bring together fine art and culinary tradition in dialogue with one of New York’s great architectural landmarks. With Marcel, we hope to reignite the spirit of historic cultural restaurants as places for gathering, conversation, and exchange,” states Robin Alesch, co-founder of Roman & Williams.

The design philosophy embraces “choreographed tension,” an insurgence of downtown energy courting the elegance of Madison Avenue. Descending to the lower level, guests enter a world transformed by rich walnut-paneled walls, warm candlelight, and the gentle hum of an open kitchen producing contemporary interpretations of French classics.

Custom Craftsmanship in Every Detail

Marcel’s interior reflects profound reverence for high craft. Custom Roman and Williams Guild lighting fixtures cast in bronze and glass complement vintage lighting originally designed by Breuer himself. The bar, a mirrored jewel of spirits and light, serves expertly crafted cocktails in exquisite handcrafted Japanese glassware.

Dusty cocoa-hued mohair banquettes nod to Upper East Side refinement circa 1966, the year Breuer’s Whitney building first opened. This attention to historical detail creates an atmospheric bridge between past and present.

The restaurant offers monumental views of both the dining room and the reimagined sculpture garden, where trees and outdoor sculptures create an oasis from Madison Avenue’s bustle.

Rotating Art Exhibitions

Marcel’s most distinctive feature lies in its ever-changing art installations. The dining room walls present a curated rotation of Sotheby’s masterworks: some destined for upcoming auctions, others available through private sales, many on special loan specifically for the restaurant’s cultural programming.

The inaugural installation features works by some of the most celebrated names in contemporary and modern art. Pieces by Roy Lichtenstein such as Mirror #1 (Four Panels) serve as stunning focal points in the main dining room. Exceptional jewelry pieces by renowned houses including David Webb, Boucheron, and René Boivin complement these major works in dedicated vitrines.

Natural history curiosities appear throughout the space. Genuine asteroid fragments and a Tyrannosaurus rex tooth create unexpected moments of fascination that encourage extended exploration and conversation among guests.

French Tradition Meets New York Innovation

Chef-partner Marie-Aude Rose leads Marcel’s culinary program with what she describes as “a marriage of tradition and temptation.” Rose, who also oversees the menu at Roman and Williams’ first restaurant, La Mercerie, brings her Parisian roots while channeling the power of mid-century New York.

The menu emphasizes continental cuisine with distinctly French influences, offering the kind of refined dining experiences featured in our top gourmet destinations. Signature offerings include traditional confit de canard and gratin de cabillaud alongside contemporary creations such as lobster with roasted pineapple and turmeric-ginger cream. The côte de boeuf feeds two to four diners, while simpler preparations include perfectly grilled salmon and mid-day sourdough tartines topped with French ham and comté.

Rose’s philosophy centers on elevated simplicity, allowing ingredient quality and classical techniques to shine while incorporating modern sensibilities.

Unparalleled Wine Programme

Marcel’s wine programme offers unprecedented access to both mature vintages and dynamic new releases, curated in partnership with Sotheby’s Wine division. This collaboration provides guests with opportunities to experience bottles from iconic estates alongside discoveries from rising-star producers.

The programme reflects the same curatorial sensibility that guides Sotheby’s auction selections. Each bottle has been chosen for its exceptional quality, provenance, and ability to complement the restaurant’s sophisticated cuisine. Sommeliers offer guidance with access to some of the world’s most coveted bottles.

La Mercerie Patisserie

La Mercerie Patisserie, an all-day bakery and café, offers exceptional pastry and viennoiserie for both dine-in enjoyment and takeaway. Under pastry chef Rae Gaylord, the programme draws inspiration from the finest French baking traditions, spanning from everyday specialties of small-town boulangeries to refined artistry of Parisian pâtisseries.

The patisserie highlights the ancient art of feuilletage, creating magnificent seasonal tarts, custardy flans encased in scalloped pastry, and glazed madeleines. The menu moves fluidly between classic and contemporary expressions, featuring select savory offerings such as open-faced croques made from bread crafted using croissant scraps.

Each item emerges packaged in ribbon-bound boxes accented in dusty blue, pale peach, and subtle lavender. These carefully designed packages extend the restaurant’s sophisticated visual identity, creating the kind of luxurious presentation found in our finest artisanal food experiences.

The Sculpture Garden

The building’s original sculpture garden underwent complete transformation to serve breakfast, lunch, and dinner in an environment that feels simultaneously urban and pastoral. This outdoor space creates a unique dining environment where guests enjoy meals among carefully selected sculptures and mature trees, all while being served from a dedicated outdoor bar.

The garden represents a gardened intervention that successfully cocoons diners from Madison Avenue’s intensity while immersing them fully in the architectural grandeur of the Breuer building. Whether enjoying morning coffee and pastry or settling in for elaborate dinner under the stars, the sculpture garden offers a completely different perspective on the Marcel experience.

Preserving Architectural Legacy

Sotheby’s transformation of 945 Madison Avenue preserves the architectural integrity of Breuer’s design while enhancing the building with state-of-the-art gallery spaces. Herzog & de Meuron, working in partnership with New York-based PBDW Architects, successfully maintained the building’s museum-quality standards while creating flexible spaces that accommodate Sotheby’s full range of offerings.

The renovation includes reimagined salesrooms, exhibition spaces across Sotheby’s wide range of collecting categories, and the seamless integration of Marcel as both a destination restaurant and an extension of the auction house’s cultural programming.

A New Paradigm for Cultural Dining

Marcel signifies the emergence of a new paradigm where cuisine and commerce intersect meaningfully, and where art and culture harmonize to create experiences that transcend traditional dining expectations. This innovative concept acknowledges the sophisticated desires of today’s luxury consumers, who seek experiences that engage multiple senses and provide genuine cultural enrichment.

The restaurant’s success lies in the seamless integration of exceptional cuisine and remarkable art collection within a space that honors both its architectural heritage and its contemporary mission, much like the sophisticated venues featured in our luxury dining destinations.

As Marcel establishes itself within New York’s competitive dining scene, it offers a compelling vision for how restaurants can serve as cultural destinations, educational spaces, and centers for meaningful exchange. It fulfills Roman and Williams’ vision of reigniting the spirit of historic cultural restaurants as places for gathering, conversation, and exchange, but with a thoroughly contemporary understanding of what luxury hospitality can achieve.
