“Cherry blossoms are cherished in Japan as a symbol of the ephemeral nature of life and the beauty of transience. With this magnificent commission, we translate an internationally renowned moment into our pinnacle motor car, Phantom, with exquisite embroidery comprising more than 250,000 stitches. Stepping inside the cabin of this ethereal vehicle, one is transported beneath a flowering cherry tree, as imagined by the client. The signature Starlight Headliner,a hallmark of Rolls-Royce interiors,has been transformed into a visual haiku. A sprawling embroidered cherry bough, studded with soft white blossoms, stretches across the ceiling in mesmerising detail.
This expansive embroidery,comprising more than 250,000 stitches,took over six months to develop, with the headliner alone requiring three weeks to complete. To evoke the shifting play of light and texture seen in actual cherry trees, the artisans employed a traditional Japanese offset tatami stitch. This weaving technique, known for its complexity, delivers a layered richness rarely seen in automotive embroidery.
Each embroidered branch appears to weave in and out of the surface, creating a three-dimensional illusion. Eleven individually stitched frame sections were painstakingly aligned by a single craftsperson to form a seamless whole,rising from the rear of the cabin and cascading forward above the passengers in a gentle, organic flow.
