The superyacht industry has seen something extraordinary with Sanlorenzo’s 58Steel. This latest addition to the Italian shipbuilder’s steel collection doesn’t just advance existing designs. It completely reimagines what sustainable luxury cruising can be in the 55 to 60-metre segment.

Fifteen Years of Steel Innovation

Perla Lunar, the first 58Steel delivery, is already cutting through the water. It marks the beginning of what will likely transform superyacht development entirely.

The 58Steel builds on the success of the acclaimed 57Steel, but this isn’t simply an evolution. The all-new diesel-electric hybrid propulsion system fundamentally changes how onboard space gets used. Every square metre matters when you’re working within the constraints of a 58-metre hull.

“The 58Steel embodies the belief of a superyacht that redefines proportion, privacy and performance, offering a new dimension of silent, sustainable cruising,” said Massimo Perotti, Executive Chairman of Sanlorenzo. “It represents our ambition to remain the benchmark in yachts up to 2,000 GT, with our expanded steel line now spanning six individual superyachts that set the standard for design and desirability.”

Revolutionary Propulsion Changes Everything

The diesel-electric system marks a first for Sanlorenzo’s steel line. Five 425 kW generators work with a 1 MWh battery pack. The results speak for themselves: 10% fewer emissions than conventional systems, two hours of silent cruising, eight hours of zero-emissions hotel operation at anchor.

But here’s what really matters. The entire engine room now fits on a single deck. That frees up more than 40 square metres of space. Sanlorenzo has repurposed every bit of it for guest accommodation and beach club facilities.

The azimuthal pods with rotating propellers don’t just improve manoeuvrability. They reduce vibration and noise to near silence. When you’re spending time in anchorages like Porto Cervo or Antibes, that quiet operation becomes invaluable.

“This yacht represents evolution, not repetition. With its diesel-electric propulsion system at the core, the 58Steel unlocks new horizons of freedom: more space, more light, greater efficiency and a profound connection to the sea,” says Tommaso Vincenzi, CEO of Sanlorenzo. “Each detail reflects our time-honoured DNA , elegance, restraint and experiential purity , reaffirming our commitment to meaningful innovation in harmony with design.”

Space That Rivals 64-Metre Yachts

Zuccon International Project handled the exterior design. They’ve stretched the yacht one metre longer than its predecessor and expanded the beam to 10.8 metres. Those might seem like modest increases, but they unlock interior volumes you’d expect on a 64-metre vessel.

The Lower deck now accommodates two full-beam VIP cabins. The Main deck houses a Supreme VIP suite. This arrangement gives owners and charter operators exceptional flexibility without compromising on space or comfort.

The Owner’s Deck Becomes a Private Residence

The Upper deck transformation is remarkable. This isn’t just another owner’s suite. It’s a secluded sanctuary with panoramic windows, a pool, office, dressing area, and a lounge that converts into a private cinema.

For charter operations, this configuration proves particularly valuable. Guests get what feels like a private residence suspended over the ocean. The full-height glazing eliminates any visual barrier between interior comfort and the horizon beyond.

Beach Club Engineering

The stern beach club opens on three sides. When fully deployed, it creates an expansive floating terrace with a full bar, hammam, gymnasium, and beauty salon.

Natural light floods in. The acoustic environment stays tranquil thanks to the diesel-electric system. The design creates genuine connection to the sea rather than just views of it.

This three-sided opening mechanism transforms what most yachts call a beach club into something approaching a floating resort facility. It’s the kind of space that makes guests forget they’re on a boat at all.

Interior Design Without Compromise

Sanlorenzo’s Style Department has crafted interiors that balance rich dark woods with Calacatta Borghini marble. Mother-of-pearl and champagne-finished accents create sophisticated contrast without overwhelming the spaces.

Every element gets custom-designed according to Sanlorenzo’s made-to-measure philosophy. The two full-beam VIP cabins on the Lower deck benefit from panoramic windows. The Supreme VIP on the Main deck delivers comfort standards that rival traditional owner’s suites.

The Main deck lounge opens onto an infinity pool, creating uninterrupted flow between interior and exterior environments. These aren’t separate spaces that happen to connect. They’re designed as unified environments that happen to be divided by moveable glass panels.

Market Success and Industry Recognition

Arcon Yachts, the Monaco-based brokerage with over 25 years in superyacht sales, sold the first 58Steel. This early commercial success validates what many in the industry suspected: discerning yacht owners increasingly value sustainable technologies alongside traditional luxury amenities.

The successful sale suggests environmental innovation will become increasingly important in future superyacht development. Owners aren’t choosing between luxury and sustainability anymore. They expect both.

Sanlorenzo’s Broader Vision

The 58Steel launch coincides with Sanlorenzo’s “Road to 2030” sustainability strategy. The company is pioneering low-impact propulsion systems including green methanol fuel cells and hydrogen-powered tenders, developed through partnerships with Siemens Energy, MAN, and MTU.

For more than six decades, Sanlorenzo has defined Italian excellence in yacht construction. Founded in 1958, the shipyard has become the world’s leading mono-brand builder of yachts exceeding 24 metres in length.

Under Massimo Perotti’s ownership and leadership since 2005, Sanlorenzo has experienced extraordinary growth. The company’s 2019 listing on Euronext STAR Milan cemented its position as a luxury yachting leader. The recent acquisition of Nautor Swan demonstrates commitment to comprehensive market leadership across both motor and sailing segments.

Design Partnerships and Cultural Leadership

Design remains fundamental to Sanlorenzo’s identity. Longstanding collaborations with Piero Lissoni, Patricia Urquiola, and Dordoni Architetti fuse yacht engineering expertise with interior design mastery.

The company’s commitment to cultural advancement extends through the Fondazione Sanlorenzo and Sanlorenzo Arts, supporting culture, sustainability, and marine conservation. Casa Sanlorenzo in Venice serves as a home for design dialogue and cultural exchange.

The 58Steel doesn’t just represent a new model introduction. It shows how an entire industry can evolve toward sustainable luxury without compromise. Through revolutionary propulsion, innovative spatial design, and unwavering craftsmanship, this vessel charts a course toward a more conscious future for superyacht development. Like The Frida Superyacht – Heesen’s Latest 55m Steel Hull, it demonstrates how shipbuilders are advancing steel construction methods.

Environmental responsibility and luxury excellence can coexist. The 58Steel proves it, much like other recent luxury ventures such as Katharine Pooley’s designs for ULYSSIA Superyacht show how exceptional design elevates modern vessels.
