Where To Find The Best Second-Hand Books in London?

Word On The Water

Address: Regent’s Canal Towpath, Kings Cross, London

One of our favourite secret spots is the aptly named Word on the Water book shop.

This is considered to be one of London’s many hidden gems and is well worth visiting even if you aren’t the biggest reading fan.

Word on the Water is known as ‘London’s Floating Bookshop’ because that’s literally what it is. Word on the Water is a floating book shop that is located on a barge which drifts majestically upon Regent’s Canal, close to King’s Cross Station.

Here you’ll find a variety of books including classics and family favourites, along with unusual and unique books you may not have heard of before.

Foster Books

Address: 183 Chiswick High Rd, Chiswick, London

If you were to see Foster Books bookshop in person, you’d be forgiven for thinking you’d been transported into a Dickensian classic.

The bookstore features a gorgeous pink and British Racing Green façade and is often found on social media sites such as Instagram.

Located on Chiswick High Street, it is the oldest store in the area and has most certainly retained its quaint and rustic charm over the years.

In summer, you’ll find books laid neatly out on tables outside the store in the street, where customers are encouraged to read and browse at their leisure until they find a book that ticks all of the right boxes.

Black Gull Books

Address: 70 Camden Lock Pl, Camden Town, London

If you ever find yourself in Camden Market and let’s face it, you probably will when in London, then you simply must check out Black Gull Books.

Black Gull Books is very unique in terms of décor, which is why it fits in so well in Camden. It features an oversized railway clock hanging down from the ceiling, along with eye-catching masks adorning one of the walls.

The book shop is old, dusty and full of charm and is packed full of fiction and non-fiction titles, as well as some fantastic travel guides and crime novels.

If you’re in East Finchley, there’s also a sister store located at 121 High Road, which is just as quirky and unique and is well worth a visit.
