Each year stars and the glitterati from around the globe descend on New York city for the annual Met Gala. The event that has become one of the major social events on the international calendar, sees both a celebration as well as an exploration of fashion as an art by all of its attendees. This year luxury jeweler TASAKI flooded the red carpet, draping some of the A-list attendants in glittering jewels.
Hosted at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City, this year’s theme was entitled HEAVENLY BODIES: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination. Its theme pays homage to the way in which the image of Catholicism has changed and influenced fashion over the years. In the catholic church symbolism as well fashion spoke volumes of the wearer’s standing in the church, designation and even their ‘level of belief and devoutness’ as once described. This year’s various fashion statements, as well as their accessories, embodied all of this.
The main theme saw a contradiction in theme, one side being ethereal and spiritual with the other portraying the ‘importance’ of man. This contradiction further pays homage to the catholic church as its dress, architecture and religious art also shows contradiction unto itself. The catholic church and its symbols have always been decadent and opulent while its main doctrine has been that of a pious and humble life here on earth. We take a look at our favourite looks that showcased the sensational jewelry by TASAKI at the Met Gala 2018.
