Discover the Rolls-Royce Chess Set: a handcrafted, bespoke luxury game blending timeless strategy with exquisite materials and unrivalled craftsmanship.
Rolls-Royce is known for its extraordinary cars, but now the marque brings that same spirit of craftsmanship and elegance into the home with the introduction of its new Rolls-Royce Chess Set.
More than just a game, this is a beautifully crafted object designed to elevate the experience of one of the world’s most cherished pastimes.
A Game of Strategy Meets Unrivalled Craftsmanship
Chess has always been more than a simple board game; it’s a test of intellect, patience, and style. Rolls-Royce recognises that many of its clients share a passion for this classic game, often playing at a high level. With that in mind, the Rolls-Royce Chess Set has been created as a natural extension of the brand’s sense of occasion and hospitality.
Nick Abrams, Accessories Designer at Rolls-Royce, explains:
“We know our clients personally, which means we understand their tastes and preferences. Many of them enjoy chess, so we wanted to create a set that feels like a genuine Rolls-Royce, a piece that’s not only beautiful but functional, and that fits seamlessly into their homes. It’s a discreet and authentic extension of our brand, crafted with the same materials and attention to detail as our cars.”
Design That Commands Attention
The Rolls-Royce Chess Set itself is a masterclass in design. It opens smoothly with a single, deliberate motion that recalls the drama of a Rolls-Royce’s coach doors swinging wide. As the board rises, a leather-lined compartment reveals magnetised pieces that hover gently on the surface, held perfectly in place no matter how intense the game gets.
The engineering here is subtle but clever: the design team tested six different magnets to find the ideal balance, strong enough to keep pieces steady but light enough to allow smooth, graceful movement. Clever touches like hidden drawers hold spare queens, ready to replace pieces that have been promoted during play.
The board’s frame is finished in polished aluminium, complete with the unmistakable Spirit of Ecstasy emblem on both front and back, quietly reminding players of the set’s pedigree.
Sculptural Chess Pieces with Real Presence
The chess pieces themselves are striking, weighty, faceted forms with a modern edge. Made from ceramic-coated aluminum, each piece has a jewel-like polished stainless-steel top and a hidden magnet, echoing the solid metal components found inside Rolls-Royce cars.
The black pieces have a smooth satin finish, while the white pieces shimmer with a subtle iridescence. The designers took inspiration from traditional chess shapes but reworked them into monolithic forms that feel as much like art as gaming tools.
Materials Taken Straight from the Rolls-Royce Workshop
True to the brand’s reputation for luxury, the Rolls-Royce Chess Set is crafted using the same exquisite materials found in Rolls-Royce interiors. Buyers can choose from four veneer finishes, each arranged in a distinctive diamond pattern:
- Blackwood with Ceramic White
- Macassar Ebony with Royal Walnut
- Smoked Eucalyptus with Paldao (open pore)
- Obsidian Ayous with Blackwood (open pore)
In addition, 13 leather colours offer further customisation. Whether clients prefer the subtle elegance of Cashmere Grey or want something bolder like Phoenix Red or even Lime Green, the leather surrounding the board and the piece holder can be tailored to suit their personal style.
Exclusivity and Bespoke Commissions
The Rolls-Royce Chess Set isn’t something you’ll find in a shop window. It’s available by commission only, sold through Rolls-Royce showrooms and Private Office boutiques, ensuring each set is tailored precisely to its owner’s wishes.
A Timeless Addition to the Luxury Lifestyle
With this Rolls-Royce Chess Set, Rolls-Royce has created more than just a game. It’s an invitation to slow down, engage with tradition, and enjoy a beautifully crafted piece of art that reflects the same values of precision, quality, and exclusivity as their motor cars. For anyone who loves chess and fine things – it’s a must-have.
