There are few pleasures quite as quietly subversive as discovering a hidden garden in one of the world’s most relentlessly busy capitals. London, for all its grandeur, rarely surrenders its green spaces without effort. From 8th June 2026, The Ritz London will offer guests something rather extraordinary: a secluded botanical garden steps from Piccadilly, where the noise of the city gives way to the gentle sound of trickling water and the rustle of white wisteria in a summer breeze.

The Secret Garden at The Ritz London is not an outdoor terrace dressed with a few potted plants. It is a considered horticultural project, born from a collaboration between two of Britain’s most distinguished design practices, conceived to transport guests into pastoral elegance without leaving the city. Accessible through the hotel’s Arlington Street entrance, the garden opens daily throughout the summer months, weather permitting, with al fresco dining, botanical cocktails, Champagne, fine wine, live entertainment, and the culinary standards for which The Ritz London has long been known.

Marcus Barnett Studio And David Collins Studio

The creative vision behind The Secret Garden comes from a partnership between Marcus Barnett Studio and David Collins Studio. Marcus Barnett Studio is responsible for some of the most celebrated landscape and horticultural projects in Britain. David Collins Studio is the interior design practice synonymous with understated, timeless luxury. Together they have shaped a space that feels simultaneously wild and composed, natural and elegant.

The garden has been planted as a sweep of grasses and perennials. Irises and hellebores sit alongside hydrangeas and crab-apple trees, while white wisteria climbs with characteristic romance. Marcus Barnett Studio considered how sunlight moves across the site throughout the day and across the weeks of the season, building a planting scheme that shifts in colour and texture as summer progresses. Pastel tones give way to deeper florals as the weeks pass, so no two visits feel entirely the same.

At the heart of the garden stands a water feature, its gentle trickling providing a soft acoustic backdrop that further separates this green sanctuary from the city outside. Seating areas are sheltered by large parasols and canopies, suited to a sun-drenched lunch or a lingering evening cocktail as dusk settles over Mayfair. For guests who stay as the evening cools, bespoke cashmere throws by Johnston’s of Elgin, one of Scotland’s most respected textile houses, are on hand to extend those twilight conversations well into the night.

Botanical Cocktails And Celebratory Sips

A garden this considered demands a drinks menu to match. The Ritz London’s beverage team has assembled a collection of botanical cocktails that draw their inspiration directly from the natural world surrounding the guest.

Among the signatures is the Garden of Eden, a composition of Boatyard Vodka, Nasturtium Distillate, Melon Cordial, Ramos Pinto Port and Meloncello Liquor, topped with soda water. Delicate and complex in equal measure, its floral and herbal notes echo the planting scheme a few feet away. The Mango Highball brings together Hibiki Harmony whisky with Mango Water, Eucalyptus Distillate, Lemon Verbena and Black Tea. Long, refreshing, and sitting at the intersection of the exotic and the botanical.

Classic cocktails are also on the menu, and it is here that one of the most significant new additions makes its debut. The Ritz 120 has been created to mark the hotel’s 120th anniversary, which falls in 2026. Built on Gold-Infused Belvedere Organic Vodka and Grand Marnier, the cocktail incorporates The Newt English Ice Cyder alongside Manzana Verde and Champagne Barons de Rothschild ‘Réserve Ritz’ Brut. Distinguished, layered, and quietly spectacular, it tells the story of The Ritz London in a single glass. A curated list of wines and Champagne is available by the glass or bottle, ensuring every palate and every occasion is met with equal care.

The Culinary Programme

The Ritz London’s culinary brigade, the team behind one of only a handful of two-Michelin-starred hotel restaurants in the country, brings its considerable expertise to the Secret Garden’s food offering. The menu is contemporary and refined, built for the kind of relaxed seasonal eating that suits an afternoon in a garden while holding to the elevated culinary standards guests of The Ritz London rightly expect.

Small plates sit alongside sandwiches and salads; seafood shares the menu with carefully prepared meat dishes. The format encourages grazing and sharing, suited to a light lunch in the sun or a more substantial early evening meal before the night unfolds elsewhere.

Several dishes stand out. The Dorset Crab Brioche Roll draws on the very best of British coastal produce, sweet fresh crab in a format that is elegant without being overwrought. The Harissa Charred Poussin with Pumpkin Seed and Smoked Almond brings warmth and depth, its North African-inflected spicing balanced by the nuttiness of the accompaniments. The Red Mullet with Ratatouille and Bouillabaisse is genuinely ambitious, the kind of dish that would sit comfortably in a far more formal setting yet works perfectly within the relaxed splendour of a summer garden.

Desserts provide a fittingly indulgent conclusion. The Ritz Vanilla Trifle is a classically British confection executed with the kitchen’s characteristic finesse. A Vanilla and Chocolate Ice Cream Mille Feuille offers something more architectural in ambition, while the Caramelised Banana and Chocolate Flan rounds out the selection with a rich, deeply satisfying sweetness.

Live Entertainment Beneath The Summer Sky

A garden of this ambition warrants more than birdsong and running water. The Ritz London has put together a programme of live entertainment to add another dimension to the Secret Garden’s atmosphere. Performances take place on Thursday and Friday evenings, throughout Saturday, and during Sunday lunch, ensuring the garden is animated with music across the peak socialising days of the week. The full programme has not yet been announced, but given The Ritz London’s record of delivering live music with the same discernment it applies to every other aspect of the guest experience, the expectations are high.

A Setting For The English Summer Season

The timing of the opening is not incidental. From 8th June 2026, the garden begins welcoming guests just as the English Summer Season reaches its most glorious pitch, a period that takes in Royal Ascot, Wimbledon, Glyndebourne, and Henley. For visitors arriving in London to participate in this most quintessentially British of social calendars, the Secret Garden offers a retreat that feels entirely in keeping with the season’s character: elegant, unhurried, and possessed of a genuine appreciation for the finer things. London’s appetite for distinctive seasonal experiences is evident elsewhere too, as seen in the Annabel’s De Gournay English Summer Garden installation, another celebration of the capital’s enduring love of horticultural artistry.

The hotel first opened its doors in 1906, conceived by the legendary hotelier César Ritz. It has spent 120 years perfecting the art of refined hospitality and holds a Royal Warrant from His Majesty The King for services to Banqueting and Catering, a distinction shared with very few establishments in the country. Its two-Michelin-starred restaurant, the celebrated Afternoon Tea, the Rivoli Bar, and the 18th-century William Kent House are each expressions of an institution that understands what it means to offer guests not merely a service but an experience.

The Secret Garden adds a new chapter to that long story, one written in the language of English horticulture, botanical mixology, and the particular pleasure of dining outdoors on a warm summer’s evening in one of the world’s great cities. It joins a broader culture of exceptional London experiences that reward those who seek them out, much as the von Goetz Gallery’s Jung-inspired contemporary art show rewards those drawn to the capital’s quieter creative corners.

Dress Code And Reservations

Guests visiting The Secret Garden should note that a smart casual dress code is in operation. Neither the strict formality of the Ritz Restaurant nor the ease of a public park, the Secret Garden occupies its own register: relaxed but never careless, stylish but never stuffy.

Reservations are available daily from 11am to 11pm. Bookings can be made by telephone on +44 (0)20 7300 2370, by email at dining@theritzlondon.com, or online at www.theritzlondon.com/the-secret-garden.

The Secret Garden at The Ritz London opens 8th June 2026. For those who secure a table within its borders this summer, it promises to be among the most memorable dining experiences London’s hospitality scene has to offer in 2026.
