Through initiatives centred on education, community development, and environmental conservation, the Foundation has left an enduring imprint, positively impacting 1.5 million lives throughout its journey.
A Reflection on Progress: President Adam Stewart’s Perspective
Reflecting on the evolution of the Sandals Foundation, President Adam Stewart, also serving as Executive Chairman of Sandals Resorts International, expressed pride in the organisation’s growth and accomplishments. Stewart remarks, “From inception, our commitment to transformative projects has remained resolute. We’ve witnessed firsthand the power of partnerships and the resilience of Caribbean people.”
Stewart emphasises the Foundation’s mission, stating, “The Sandals Foundation is deeply rooted in the belief that empowered Caribbean individuals can shape a brighter future for themselves, their communities, and future generations. We’ve achieved significant milestones, including recognition by the United Nations Department of Communication for our contribution to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). This acknowledgement affirms that our local initiatives align with broader global objectives.”
Established on 18th March 2009, the Sandals Foundation emerged as an extension of Sandals Resorts International’s community outreach endeavours. Over the years, the Foundation has made notable progress across its core focus areas.
Education: Empowering Through Knowledge
Under the mantra “Nurturing Minds, Shaping Futures,” the Sandals Foundation is committed to facilitating access to quality education for all. Through various projects, including sustainable water initiatives, school construction, infrastructure enhancements, provision of technological resources, scholarship programmes, and literacy support, the Foundation has empowered over 350,000 students.
Additionally, they’ve distributed more than 6,000 digital learning devices, supported over 2,000 schools, granted 200 scholarships, and disseminated 300,000 books to educational institutions.
In the words of Adam Stewart, “Education is the cornerstone of empowerment. By equipping individuals with the tools and knowledge they need, we enable them to unlock their full potential and contribute meaningfully to society.”
Through strategic partnerships and community engagement, the Sandals Foundation continues to expand its educational initiatives, striving for a future where every Caribbean child has access to quality learning opportunities.
Community Development: Fostering Resilient Societies
By investing in skills training, youth engagement, and livelihood programmes, the Sandals Foundation has contributed to the development of vibrant and resilient Caribbean communities.
Recent efforts have prioritised food security initiatives, climate-smart technology adoption, and women’s empowerment through the WHOA (Women Helping Others Achieve) programme. Through strategic health partnerships, the Foundation has bolstered medical infrastructure and personnel training, benefiting thousands.
The Foundation recognises that sustainable development goes hand in hand with community empowerment. “Our goal is not only to address immediate needs but to create lasting change,” remarks Heidi Clarke, Executive Director of the Sandals Foundation. “By investing in skills training and entrepreneurship, we’re equipping individuals with the tools to build better futures for themselves and their families.” Through initiatives like WHOA, the Foundation empowers women to become agents of change within their communities, fostering economic independence and social cohesion.
Environmental Conservation: Preserving Natural Treasures
Recognising the significance of preserving the Caribbean’s biodiversity, the Sandals Foundation leads conservation efforts, focusing on marine sanctuary management, coral restoration, and environmental education.
Collaborating with experts, the Foundation supports the development of environmental curricula and conducts field trips to raise awareness among youth. Their efforts have led to the support of 19 protected areas, the planting of 33,000 corals, and 27,000 terrestrial and marine trees, fostering regional biodiversity.
Environmental stewardship is at the heart of the Sandals Foundation’s conservation efforts. “Our natural heritage is a priceless treasure that must be protected for future generations,” asserts Adam Stewart. “Through initiatives like marine sanctuary management and coral restoration, we’re safeguarding the Caribbean’s ecosystems and ensuring their vitality for years to come.”
By engaging local communities and fostering a culture of environmental responsibility, the Foundation aims to create a sustainable future where nature thrives alongside human development.
Looking Ahead: A Commitment to Empowerment
As the Sandals Foundation enters its next phase, Executive Director Heidi Clarke underscores the commitment to empowerment. Clarke asserts, “Empowerment entails providing individuals and communities with the resources, skills, opportunities, and inspiration to drive positive change.” She outlines plans for inclusive education, economic growth through skills development, and strategic partnerships to further community programmes.
The Foundation remains dedicated to its mission of fostering holistic development across the Caribbean. “Our work is far from over,” says Clarke. “In the years ahead, we will continue to expand our impact, working hand in hand with communities to build brighter futures.” Through collaboration and innovation, the Sandals Foundation aims to lead by example, inspiring positive change throughout the region.
Fostering Collaboration for Lasting Impact
With the collective support of team members, guests, corporations, and community partners, the Sandals Foundation embarks on its future endeavours with “The Power of 15.” Through collaborative efforts, the Foundation aims to amplify its impact and continue fostering positive change throughout the Caribbean region.
