Yinka Ilori’s vibrant takeover of Sotheby’s London café celebrates immigrant experiences through bold design and a meaningful ceramic trophy.
British-Nigerian artist Yinka Ilori MBE has brought his signature style to one of the world’s most prestigious auction houses. This September, Sotheby’s New Bond Street location in London unveiled a striking transformation of its public café space, reimagined through Ilori’s distinctive lens of joyful colours and meaningful symbolism.
The immersive installation, titled “Pride is Within My Story”, opened its doors to the public on 5 September 2024 and will run through 31 October. More than just a visual spectacle, this project serves as a poignant tribute to the immigrant experience in the UK, celebrating the diversity and resilience that have shaped London’s vibrant artistic community.
A Celebration of Heritage and Dreams
At the heart of Ilori’s takeover is a profound narrative that resonates deeply with the artist’s personal history and the broader immigrant experience in Britain. The centrepiece of the newly designed café is a bespoke, large-scale trophy titled “Places That Build Their Dreams”.
Standing over one metre tall, this striking ceramic piece is a labour of love that speaks volumes about Ilori’s heritage and the immigrant journey.
“The narrative surrounding this project is one very close to my heart,” Ilori explains. “The process of designing Sotheby’s space and creating this ceramic piece with 1882 Ltd. has enabled me to reflect on my childhood, being raised in a multi-cultural household in the heart of London.”
The trophy pays homage to Yinka Ilori’s childhood home in Islington, featuring a photograph of the estate at its centre. Crowning the piece is an intricate dove, symbolising peace and hope.
This creation draws inspiration from the traditional British ornaments and ceramics that immigrant families would often display in their homes as symbols of achievement and aspiration.
Reimagining Symbols of Success
Ilori’s work cleverly subverts and reimagines these traditional symbols of success. The classic blue and white patterned Willow Plate, which came to inherit a trophy-like status in many immigrant households, serves as a jumping-off point for Ilori’s artistic exploration.
“Growing up, I was surrounded by like-minded families who devoted their lives to achieving success in the UK – a new place they called home,” Ilori reflects. “It was their dedication and hustle that continues to inspire me today, and I hope that this project will help tell the true tale of their hardship and dream building, which many immigrants living in the UK still experience today.”
The blue and white colour palette of the collection also pays homage to the indigo-coloured fabrics of Yinka Ilori’s Nigerian heritage. These Adire fabrics, handcrafted and worn by Yoruba women in South West Nigeria, often feature patterns that symbolise themes such as the cycle of life and the crossroads of life and hope.
A Collaborative Effort
To bring his vision to life, Yinka Ilori collaborated with 1882 Ltd, a British ceramics factory in Stoke-on-Trent founded by the fourth and fifth generations of the Johnson Brothers family. This partnership highlights the intersection of traditional British craftsmanship with contemporary, culturally diverse design.
Emily Johnson, Creative Director, Co-Founder and Owner of 1882 Ltd, expressed enthusiasm for the collaboration: “It has been an absolute joy to collaborate with Yinka Ilori on this magnificent piece. At the heart of 1882 Ltd. is our love of collaboration, design and most of all, heritage craft skills. It has been an inspiring journey working on capturing the spirit of Yinka and the rich and inspiring history of immigrants living in the UK.”
Transforming Sotheby’s Public Space
Yinka Ilori’s takeover extends beyond the centrepiece trophy to encompass the entire Sotheby’s café space. The walls and furniture are adorned with floor-to-ceiling adire motifs and symbols, all rendered in Ilori’s iconic, bold, and joyful style. This immersive environment invites visitors to engage with the narrative of immigrant experiences in a visceral, emotional way.
Hannah O’Leary, Head of Modern and Contemporary African Art at Sotheby’s, shared her excitement about the project: “It is tremendously exciting to mark the beginning of Autumn at Sotheby’s with this unprecedented takeover. We have long admired the work of Yinka whose bold visual language draws on his heritage to create new meaning through contemporary design which is wholly unique and exciting. His work resonates with a global audience, and we hope the immersive takeover of Sotheby’s café will bring joy to all.”
The Power of Design to Unite Communities
Ilori’s work is underpinned by a fundamental belief in the power of design to bring communities together and have a positive impact on society. His approach to this project at Sotheby’s is no exception, aiming to evoke a sense of joy and optimism in all who experience it.
“My work is joyful and unapologetic. It’s also very much about storytelling – I want to encourage dialogues between all those who experience my work,” Ilori states. “We are all products of different and personal experiences, but at the core of it all, we share a resilience, a hardship, and emotion. For me, design can bring together communities and have a positive impact on society.”
This philosophy is evident in the way Yinka Ilori has transformed the Sotheby’s café into a space that invites conversation, reflection and shared experiences. By bringing his vibrant aesthetic to this prestigious institution, Yinka Ilori creates a bridge between different worlds, encouraging dialogue and understanding.

Yinka Ilori’s collaboration with Sotheby’s marks another significant milestone in the artist’s rapidly ascending career. Known for his multi-disciplinary approach that spans art, design, and architecture, Ilori has gained international recognition for his bold visual language and meaningful narratives.
His work often uses the city as a canvas, reimagining public spaces to encourage a sense of community and inviting audiences to engage and participate. This approach has led to high-profile commissions and exhibitions around the world, cementing Ilori’s reputation as one of the most exciting contemporary artists working today.
