We have scoured the film cans and put together a list of the best 30 movies about best friends to warm your heart and remind us just how important they are.

American author and motivational speaker Leo Buscaglia once said: “A single rose can be my garden… a single friend, my world.” It’s easy to sometimes forget just how important friendships are and how they can offer us stability, advice and an ear during good and bad times.

So in celebration of our BFFs and the big role they play in our daily lives, we have searched far and wide to put together the top 30 movies about best friends we could find.

1. The Color Purple

Not only is The Color Purple the ultimate movie about sisters who are best friends but it is a heart-wrenching story that reminds us that no matter how dark the situation, love and righteousness will prevail. The film is based on the Pulitzer Prize-winning 1982 written by Alice Walker. Directed by Steven Spielberg with a screenplay by Menno Meyjes, The Color Purple follows the life of Celie (played by Whoopi Goldberg) who is forcefully separated from her sister and best friend by her abusive husband. But, despite his best efforts, this true friendship cannot be crushed or destroyed. It’s the ultimate reminder to cherish those around us and takes our number one spot on the top 30 movies about best friends.

2. First Wives Club

Coming in at number two on our list is another oldie but a goodie. The First Wives Club is a hilarious yet touching film about three old friends who rediscover each other after the tragic suicide of their college friend. Ageing actress Elise Eliot-Atchison (played by Goldie Hawn), Sicilian-Jewish single mother Brenda Morelli-Cushman (played by Bette Midler) and slightly anxious and neurotic housewife Annie MacDuggan-Paradis (played by Diane Keaton) find out that their seemingly different lives are quite similar when they realise that all three of their husbands are divorcing them for other women. It’s a great friendship movie that is all about standing together and overcoming a seemingly impossible situation.

3. Bend It Like Beckham

This 2002 film, follows the story of a young Indian girl Jess Bhamra (played by Parminder Nagra) from London who is raised in a conservative home. Although she is already of age, her dream of playing organised soccer is strictly forbidden by her parents. When Jules Paxton (played by Keira Knightley), sees Jess’ potential she convinces her to defy her parents and follow her heart. Bend it like Beckham is a movie about friendship, following your heart and challenging female stereotypes.

4. Bridesmaids

Bridesmaids is arguably one of the funniest movies of 2011. When Annie (played by Kristen Wiig) hears the news that her best friend Lillian (played by Maya Rudolph), is engaged, she becomes her maid of honour, despite the fact that her own life is falling apart. Their seemingly rock-solid friendship is tested when Annie meets Lillian’s new friend. This hilarious BFF movie’s endless number of insane moments and situations will have you in stitches! Plus to put the icing on the cake, Melissa McCarthy’s character Megan Price is so epic that she deserves her own spinoff!

5. My Afternoons with Margueritte

Based on Marie-Sabine Roger’s book, Margueritte, My Afternoons with Margueritte is a french that delves into the topic of unlikely friendships. In the film, sweet yet oafish Germain (played by Gérard Depardieu) meets a 95-year-old by the name of Margueritte (played by Gisèle Casadesus) by chance. They develop a deep and touching friendship when Margueritte introduces Germain to her love of books. It’s a sweet and touching movie that will have you feeling warm and satisfied.

6. Romy and Michele’s High School Reunion

Another great comedy with a very deep undertone is Romy and Michele’s High School Reunion. Romy (played by Mira Sorvino) and Michele (played by Lisa Kudrow) has the kind of friendship we all see as goals. Their love and support remain true through thick and thin, and let’s be honest life usually has more thin than thick. The story follows the two high-school BFFs post highschool. Although still close as ever, following their graduation their lives haven’t quite turned out the way they had thought it would by now. So they decide to go to their high-school reunion and pretend to be successful. But as always, the lies start spinning out of control. It’s a funny movie that reminds us to be ourselves. If our best friends love us the way we are why won’t the rest of the world?

7. The Perks of Being a Wallflower

Number seven on our top 30 movies about best friends is the 2012 comedy The Perks of Being a Wallflower. This touching film is about a young man, Charlie (played by Logan Lerman) who finds friendship when he thought he never would. In this movie, Patrick (played by Ezra Miller) and his free-spirited stepsister Sam (played by Emma Watson) introduce Charlie to a new world of friendship, fun and first love.

8. The Help

The Help is a 2011 must-see! Adapted by Kathryn Stockett’s 2009 novel, the movie follows Southerner Skeeter (played by Emma Stone) on her journey of writing an expose book entitled The Help. But to write it, she needs help, and she manages to convince the black women who work in the homes of prominent white families to tell their side of the story. The Help is not just a wonderful film with an exceptional cast, including Viola Davis as Aibileen Clark and Octavia Spencer as Minny Jackson, but touches on all forms of friendship; supportive, deep and unchanging, loving, cautioning and yes even daring.

9. The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants

The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants is another great friendship movie that is based on a novel. In this case, written by Ann Brashares. The story follows four close friends from a little town called Bethesda, in Maryland. These very different, young inseparable friends are about to spend their first summer apart. Tibby (played by Amber Tamblyn) is staying at home, Lena (played by Alexis Bledel) is spending the summer with her grandparents in Santorini, Greece, Carmen (played by America Ferrera) is visiting her father in South Carolina while Bridget (played by Blake Lively) travels to Mexico for a soccer camp. On one of the last days together, the girls go out shopping and find a pair of jeans that magically fit them and flatters each of them. The movie then follows each of their journies. Its a film about laughs, cries and above all friendship.

10. The Intouchables

The Intouchables is an incredible film that will have you in tears, hopeful, sad, laughing out loud and evening wishing you could magically intervene. This incredibly touching story follows the growth of friendship in an unusual situation. Inspired by the true story of Philippe Pozzo di Borgo and his French-Algerian caregiver Abdel Sellou, the storyline follows a wealthy French aristocrat Philippe (played by François Cluzet) who has become a quadriplegic following a paragliding accident. Thanks to his new caregiver Bakary “Driss” Bassari (played by Omar Sy) he finds a deep friendship and gets a new lease on life. Together, the unlikely duo goes on adventures, both small and large, and builds a bond that will have you reaching for the phone just to text your bestie.

11. Thelma & Louise

Thelma & Louise are absolute friendship-goals! No matter what happens, these women stick together. Now when we say no matter what, we mean no matter what. Strong waitress Louise (played by Susan Sarandon) joins her housewife bestie Thelma (played by Geena Davis) on a fishing trip. But when Louise kills a man when he tries to rape Thelma at the bar, the duo decides to flee to Mexico. This is a great friendship movie and has one of film’s most iconic ending scenes… ever!

12. Me and Earl and the Dying Girl

Me and Earl and the Dying Girl is a brilliant 2015 drama/comedy movie that explores those friendships that blossom during, or perhaps in spite of, terrible situations. High school students Greg (played by Thomas Mann) and co-worker Earl (played by RJ Cyler) love making movies together. Then the news hits Greg that his former childhood friend Rachel Kushner (played by Olivia Cooke) has been diagnosed with leukaemia and is forced by his parents to spend time with her. As their friendship grows, Greg’s crush, Madison (played by Katherine C. Hughes), convinces Greg and Earl to make a film dedicated to Rachel. It’s a heartwarming film about friendship and connection. Just make sure that you keep those tissues near.

13. The Breakfast Club

The Breakfast Club is a 1980s classic and squarely deserves a spot on our list of top movies about best friends. The story sees a group of 5 students meet during Saturday detention under the strict order of the principal (Played by Paul Gleason). The movie follows outcast Allison (played by Ally Sheedy), jock Andrew (played by Emilio Estevez), smart Brian (played by Anthony Michael Hall) and school beauty Claire (played by Molly Ringwald) get to know each other and reshape each other’s way of seeing the world.

14. Clueless

In Clueless, Cher (played by Alicia Silverstone) is the most popular girl in her Beverly Hills high school. Rich, spoilt and beautiful, Cher sees herself as the ultimate matchmaker. Through some cunning planning, she manages to get two lonely teachers together and decides to give the new misfit Tai (played by Brittany Murphy) a makeover. This plan backfires when Tai becomes the most popular girl in school and overshadows Cher. This movie is a fun, brilliant coming of age film and will make you wish that you had a friendship at school, like the one Cher and Dionne (played by Stacey Dash) have.

15. Beaches

Most friendships come and go but sometimes, you have those that last a lifetime. Beaches is a wonderfully touching movie about those rare friendships that last forever. While vacationing in Atlantic City as children, CC (played by Bette Midler) and Hillary (played by Barbara Hershey) meet and have an instantaneous connection. The movie follows their story as Hillary becomes a successful lawyer and CC works on her singing career. This film depicts true friendship. Through the kind of issues and obstacles that a lot of us face but it reminds us that we don’t have to go through it alone.

16. A League of Their Own

Coming in at no 16 of our top 30 movies about friends list is the classic A League of Their Own. Funded by the publicity-hungry candy maker Walter Harvey (played by Garry Marshall), a professional all-female baseball league starts up due to the depletion of young men during World War II. Managed by coach Jimmy Dugan (played by Tom Hanks), he plans on taking Dottie Hinson (played by Geena Davis) and Kit Keller (played by Lori Petty) and the entire all-girl team all the way to the top. This is a fun comedy about sticking together and overcoming the odds. As another great highlight, the film also features Madonna and Rosie O’Donnell

17. Mean Girls

Educated in Africa by her scientist parents, Cady Heron (played by Lindsay Lohan) moves back to America and is enrolled in High School. On her first day, she is unable to make any friends, but on her second day, she befriends goth Janis Ian (played by Lizzy Caplan) and flamboyant Damian Leigh (played by Daniel Franzese). Cady falls into the good graces of queen bee Regina George (played by Rachel McAdams) and is soon accepted into their clique together with popular girls Karen Smith (played by Amanda Seyfried) and Gretchen Wieners (played by Lacey Chabert). The clique is known as “the plastics” but she soon finds out just how cunningly cruel these “friends” are and Cady plans to take them down. Mean Girls is a hilarious take on friendship, genuine and fake and will make you think twice about what kind of friends you want.

18. The Boy in the Striped Pajamas

Solidly earning a spot on our top movies about best friends is the heart-wrenching film The Boy in the Striped Pajamas. Living in Berlin during World War II, 8-year-old Bruno (played by Asa Butterfield) and his family relocate as his father (played by David Thewlis) is made a Nazi commandant over a nearby concentration camp. Bored and lonely, young Bruno explores the nearby woods and stumbles upon the concentration camp. At the fence, he meets a Jewish boy his age called Shmuel (played by Jack Scanlon). The forbidden friendship is formed and grows through the barbed-wire fence.

19. Miss You Already

Right off the bat, we have to warn you that Miss You Already is an absolute and utter cry fest! Since meeting in grade school, Milly (played by Toni Collette) and Jess (played by Drew Barrymore) have become best friends and continue to do everything together. Environmentalist Jess marries her long-time boyfriend while Milly marries her rocker boyfriend and has two children. But then Milly finds out that she has breast cancer after a long-delayed checkup. As Milly fights for her life, Jess discovers that she’s pregnant. Miss You Already is an exceptionally sad, yet heartwarming film about two friends battling the extremities of life together as one fights for her life and the other is about to bring new life into the world.

20. Crossroads

Crossroads is one of those movies about best friends that will make you want to go on a road trip with your best friends and find yourself on the open road. In this 2002 film, Lucy (played by Britney Spears), Kit (played by Zoe Saldana) and Mimi (played by Taryn Manning) used to be childhood friends. But, as often happens in life, they drifted apart. Then, the three girls embark on a cross-country road trip with Mimi’s hunky friend Ben (played by Anson Mount) as their driver. Through this journey, the friends rediscover themselves, the value of holding on to your dreams and most importantly each other.

21. The Little Prince

The first animation on our list of top movies about best friends is The Little Prince. Originally written by French aristocrat, poet and pioneering aviator Antoine de Saint-Exupéry, The Little Prince is a movie about love, loss and above all friendship. When a little girl’s life is completely laid out for her by an overachieving mother, the little girl’s childhood is stolen from her. She befriends an elderly neighbour that teaches her that it is only with the heart that one can truly see. It is a film that explores an unlikely friendship with character at the beginning of her life and the other at the end of his.

22. Girl, Interrupted

Based on a true story, Girl, Interrupted is set in the 1960s. When Susanna Kaysen (played by Winona Ryder) suffers a botched suicide attempt, she is sent to Claymoore, a renowned psychiatric hospital for troubled young women. She soon becomes befriended with the ward’s longest resident, the manipulative and rebel Lisa (played by Angelina Jolie). The film follows their relationship deepening and Susanna’s journey to self-discovery.

23. The Sweetest Thing

Directed by Roger Kumble, The Sweetest Thing is a rom-com meets movies about best friends. Christina Walters (played by Cameron Diaz) had her heart broken too many times (anyone else relates or is it just us?) and decided that searching for ‘the one’ won’t be for her. But then she unexpectedly meets Peter (played by Thomas Jane) in a night club and she is instantly struck. When he disappears the next day, Christina enlists the help of her best friend Courtney (played by Christina Applegate) to go on a road trip and track him down. The film is a great laugh and there are plenty of hysterical moments and misadventures along their way.

24. Lady Bird

Lady Bird is one of those movies about best friends that explores friendship in all of its various shapes and forms. This powerful and exquisite film by Greta Gerwig takes place in Sacramento, California where a strong-willed senior Christine McPherson, who calls herself “Lady Bird”, (played by Saoirse Ronan) wants to escape from her current life. Although in the film Lady Bird replaces her best friend for a rich popular girl, the true friendship that this movie explores is that between her and her mother Marion (played by Laurie Metcalf). It’s a love-hate relationship that slowly grows through the turmoil of teenage years but reminds us that sometimes our mothers can be our best friends without us even realising it.

25. Steel Magnolias

The 80s classic movie Steel Magnolias is one of those movies about best friends that will make you thankful for life and those in it. Bride-to-be Shelby Eatenton (played by Julia Roberts) is a diabetic and gets a health scare which she is cleared from but the hopes of her having children now look slim as her mother M’Lynn (played by Sally Field) and friend Truvy Jones (played by Dolly Parton) help each other navigate through life. It’s a film about life, its ups and downs and how important it is to have the right friends stand by you to help you navigate through life’s troubles.

26. Sex And The City

Our four favourite New York gal-pals came back after we last saw them in our religiously watched series Sex and the City. In this 2008 drama-romance, we finally see Carrie Bradshaw (played by Sarah Jessica Parker) and Mr Big (played by Chris Noth) tie the knot. Or at least try to. Miranda, now living in Brooklyn (played by Cynthia Nixon) is really starting to feel the reality and pressure of life. Charlotte (played by Kristin Davis) and her husband who now live on the Upper East Side are pregnant and Samantha (played by Kim Cattrall) survived cancer and started a monogamous relationship with Smith Jerrod (played by Jason Lewis). We follow the four best friends through love, laughs, changes and disappointments.

27. 9 To 5

Another great classic from the 1980s is the ultimate best friend meets girl power movie 9 to 5. Violet Newstead (played by Lily Tomlin), Judy Bernly (played by Jane Fonda) and Doralee Rhodes (played by Dolly Parton) work at Consolidated Companies. Verbally abused and overlooked based on their gender, the three women dream about taking revenge on their tyrannical and sexist boss. After a night together of scheming up ways to kill him and take over the business themselves hypothetically, one of them is distressed the next day when she suspects that she really did poison her boss. This is a great film about comradery, friendship, a whole lot of laughs and most importantly girl-power!

28. Toy Story


The second animation to make our list of top movies about best friends is the classic Toy Story. Now although most of us have seen this movie before, rewatching it as an adult gives an entirely new experience on the storyline. If a movie about friendship is what you’re craving then it doesn’t get better than this. Heck, even the title song is “you’ve got a friend in me”!

29. Now and Then

Directed by Lesli Linka Glatter, Then And Now is a 1995 classic that will make you nostalgic for those summers growing up. Roberta Martin (played by Rosie O’Donnell), Tina “Teeny” Tercell (played by Melanie Griffith) and Samantha Albertson (played by Demi Moore) return to their hometown to see their best friend Chrissy DeWitt Williams (played by Rita Wilson) through her first pregnancy. The best friends reminisce over the unforgettable summer of 1970.

30. Someone Great

Number 30 on our list of the top movies about best friends is the Netflix original movie Somone Great. This movie addresses the realities of life when our plans are changed and what we thought was stable and secure is all of a sudden turned upside down. Living in New York, Jenny (played by Gina Rodriguez) is a music journalist with a dream of working at Rolling Stone in San Francisco. When she lands her dream job, her boyfriend of 9 years breaks up with her as he is not “ready to leave New York“. Following the breakup, she asks her two best friends Erin (played by DeWanda Wise) and Blair (played by Brittany Snow) to join her for one last crazy adventurous night in the Big Apple before she relocates. It’s a fun movie about friends, sticking together, supporting each other and helping you get and go through life’s changes.
