Fabergé unveils a spellbinding jewellery collection inspired by Tim Burton’s “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice”, blending cinematic artistry with exquisite craftsmanship.
Fabergé, the world’s most iconic artist jeweller, has unveiled a spellbinding collaboration with Warner Bros. Discovery Global Consumer Products.
This extraordinary partnership has given birth to the Fabergé x Beetlejuice Beetlejuice® fine jewellery collection, a dazzling homage to Tim Burton’s highly anticipated sequel, “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice”.
The film industry has been buzzing with excitement over the release of the second instalment of the Beetlejuice franchise, this avant-garde collection promises to captivate jewellery enthusiasts and film aficionados alike.
A Creative Dream Team
At the centre of this historic collaboration are three creative heavyweights, each bringing their own special skills to the table. Tim Burton, the director behind the term ‘Burtonesque’, has worked with two other masters of their craft:
- Colleen Atwood, the Oscar-winning costume designer renowned for her work on films such as “Alice in Wonderland”, “Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street”, and “Sleepy Hollow”.
- Liisa Tallgren, Fabergé’s Head of Design, whose innovative approach has consistently pushed the boundaries of haute joaillerie.
Under the astute guidance of Fabergé Creative Director, Josina von dem Bussche-Kessell, this ensemble of creative minds has crafted a collection that not only encapsulates the essence of both Fabergé and Beetlejuice but also promises to ignite the imagination of a new generation of admirers.
Von dem Bussche-Kessell eloquently expresses the ethos behind this collaboration: “In every partnership we forge, we look for like-minded care and attention to creativity and a fearless commitment to challenging the status quo, and in the process, offer something unexpected and surprising.
Colleen and Tim are true innovators and creative geniuses in their storytelling, and together we have created a collection which is modern and humorous and pays homage to their work on the big screen. It has been an extremely harmonious collaboration, filled with pure joy all the way. I am very proud of what we’ve achieved together.”
Design and Craftsmanship
The Fabergé x Beetlejuice Beetlejuice® collection, set to debut on 20th August, is a testament to the meticulous craftsmanship and innovative design that has long been synonymous with the Fabergé name. The collection comprises an array of exquisite pieces, including:
- 18k white gold earrings
- Pendants
- Lapel pins
- Collar bars
- Rings
Each piece in the collection draws inspiration from two primary sources:
- The spiral motif, a recurring element in Tim Burton’s iconic films
- Two eerie Beetlejuice characters: Headworm and Sandworm
The jewellery pieces are adorned with responsibly mined Gemfields emeralds or rubies, cut into round, oval, or pear shapes. These vibrant gemstones are sourced from Gemfields’ mines in Mozambique and Zambia, reflecting the company’s commitment to ethical and sustainable practices in the gemstone industry.
A Palette of Cinematic Inspiration
The colour palette of the collection has been meticulously curated to reflect the distinctive hues of the leading characters’ costumes in “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice”. This thoughtful approach ensures that each piece not only stands as a work of art in its own right but also serves as a tangible connection to the film’s visual narrative.
Colleen Atwood, reflecting on her involvement in the project, shares her long-standing admiration for Fabergé: “I have always considered Fabergé to be like a beautiful piece of art. My first experience with the Maison was at an exhibition of its historical pieces in a museum many years ago; the creations I saw were so amazing, that I felt inspired to dig a little deeper to learn more about the magical objects and jewels they produced.”
She continues, emphasising the synergy between costume design and jewellery creation: “Costume design and Fabergé go together like kindred spirits. Both are constantly changing and evolving, and each uses classic technology alongside more innovative techniques in the creative process with the ultimate goal of creating beauty and bringing joy to others.”
The Art of Enamelling: A Fabergé Signature
One of the key features of the collection is the use of UV enamel in black, red or green. This is a Fabergé signature and adds depth and dimension to each piece and makes the visual spectacle of Burton’s world.
Liisa Tallgren, Fabergé’s Head of Design, offers insight into the inspiration behind the collection: “I was inspired by the original “Beetlejuice” film (1988), in which a character called Betelgeuse, the Afterlife’s leading Bio-exorcist, appears as an eerie creature with a carousel head and spiral arms that unwind to form arms with mallets for hands. Throughout the films, Betelgeuse is dressed in a black and white suit, so we have dressed our collection in the same style to epitomise this.”
Iconic Motifs and Character-Inspired Designs
The collection features several standout pieces that pay direct homage to key elements of the Beetlejuice universe:
The Fabergé Egg Reimagined
The Fabergé x Beetlejuice Beetlejuice White Gold Spiral Egg Drop Earrings and Pendants offer a contemporary interpretation of Fabergé’s iconic egg motif.
Available with either a Mozambican ruby or Zambian emerald, these pieces feature complementing green or red UV enamel and are surrounded by white diamonds, creating a striking visual impact.
Collar Bars and Lapel Pins: A Nod to Beetlejuice’s Eccentricity
The Fabergé x Beetlejuice Beetlejuice White Gold Spiral Collar Bars and Lapel Pins showcase either a Mozambican ruby or a Zambian emerald at the centre of a spiral design, surrounded by black UV enamel and diamonds.
The striped monochrome elements within these designs echo the visuals in the films and mimic the stripes on the Sandworm creatures.
The Headworm: A Whimsical Touch
The Fabergé x Beetlejuice Beetlejuice White Gold Straight and Twisted Headworm Collar Bars feature miniature heads of the Headworm character, each adorned with round or pear-shaped Mozambican rubies or Zambian emeralds.
Sandworm-Inspired Rings
The Fabergé x Beetlejuice Beetlejuice White Gold Sandworm Spiral Wrap Rings feature a pear-shaped Zambian emerald or Mozambican ruby surrounded by white diamonds and two-tone red or green UV enamel.
The pear-shaped gemstones cleverly resemble the shape of the Sandworm creature’s head.
The Spiral Motif
The Fabergé x Beetlejuice Beetlejuice White Gold Bombe Rings pay homage to the spiral shape, with monochrome colours lifted by an oval-shaped ruby or emerald set into the centre of the spiral, reminiscent of the centre of a vortex.
A Director’s Vision in Jewellery
Tim Burton, the mastermind behind the Beetlejuice franchise, expresses his enthusiasm for the collaboration: “This collaboration with Fabergé is a very exciting opportunity to merge the world of Beetlejuice with the legendary jewellery house – I am very honoured.”
This sentiment is echoed by Colleen Atwood, who reflects on the creative process: “I have immensely enjoyed the process of putting pencil to paper and watching our ideas evolve. There are no real barriers to bringing creativity to beautiful gems, each one with its own nuanced colour, and there are almost limitless possibilities with design.
A quirky sense of fun is reflected in this collection and the hypnotic spirals and characterful motifs epitomise the spirit of Beetlejuice Beetlejuice.”
Ethical Sourcing and Responsible Mining
In line with contemporary values and the growing demand for ethically sourced gemstones, the Fabergé x Beetlejuice Beetlejuice® collection features responsibly mined gems from Gemfields. The company is renowned for its commitment to providing a positive impact in the countries where its gemstones originate.
The fiery, vivid red rubies featured in the collection were mined at Montepuez Ruby Mining in Mozambique, while the glowing green emeralds were sourced from Kagem Mining in Zambia. Both mines are majority-owned and operated by Gemfields, ensuring a transparent and ethical supply chain from mine to market.
