Annabel’s 2024 Amazon Facade ignites hope, uniting London’s elite with rainforest guardians to combat deforestation and support indigenous communities.

London’s Berkeley Square has once again become the stage for an extraordinary transformation. Annabel’s, the world-renowned Private Members’ Club, unveils its annual façade in a dazzling display of artistry and advocacy.

This year’s installation, revealed on World Amazon Day, marks another chapter in the ongoing Annabel’s for the Amazon charity initiative, a campaign that has become synonymous with supporting the Indigenous communities and biodiversity of the Brazilian rainforest.

A Façade That Speaks Volumes

The 2024 façade, a creation of Tatiana Kharchylava, Creative Director of The Birley Clubs, stands as a powerful visual narrative. At its core is a striking Indigenous headdress, a symbol laden with meaning and urgency.

This headdress, traditionally adorned by community leaders, represents more than mere decoration; it embodies the strength and resilience of those on the frontlines of Amazon conservation.

“We are thankful to once again bring this powerful display to the heart of London, created in collaboration with the Nukini community, to continue raising awareness for this vital cause at Annabel’s,” Kharchylava remarks, underscoring the collaborative nature of the project.

The installation’s most poignant element is perhaps its single burning feather, a stark reminder of the Amazon’s fragility. It serves as a visual metaphor for the rapid destruction wrought by deforestation, illegal mining, and environmental degradation. Crafted from sustainably sourced and recycled materials from previous years’ façades, the display itself embodies the principles of sustainability it champions.

A Voice from the Amazon

Val Nukini, a leader of the Nukini community which has received support from The Caring Family Foundation (TCFF), offers a profound perspective on the façade’s symbolism: “We, the Nukini people, are honoured to see our headdress featured in Annabel’s facade. The red symbolises our strength and courage, yellow and blue represent our warriors who protect the forest, and green honours our female leaders safeguarding our land and people. By showcasing these colours, Annabel’s highlights our resistance, victories, and the rich heritage of our territory.”

This statement from Val Nukini not only adds depth to the visual display but also serves as a powerful reminder of the real people and communities at the heart of this initiative.

Five Years of Impactful Change

As TCFF marks its fifth year in 2024, its achievements stand as a testament to the power of sustained commitment. The foundation has solidified its position as one of the UK’s largest donors to Brazilian reforestation, with over two million trees planted in Brazil.

Beyond environmental conservation, TCFF’s impact extends to social welfare, having distributed more than two million meals and delivered over 20,000 domestic abuse services across the UK and Brazil.

Expanding Horizons in 2024

This year’s Annabel’s for the Amazon campaign aims to deepen TCFF’s impact within the state of Acre while broadening its overall scope. The initiative focuses on uplifting women and bolstering the economic well-being of local and Indigenous communities.

A key component of this year’s efforts is the funding of 14 community seedling nurseries across five different regions, a project designed to significantly boost family incomes over a three-year period.

TCFF’s commitment to fostering positive change is evident in its expansion to embrace and empower two additional Indigenous communities and their families. This growth is underpinned by a deep respect for the wisdom of local and Indigenous leaders, ensuring that interventions are both culturally sensitive and truly beneficial.

Partnerships for Progress

The foundation’s ongoing collaboration with SOS Amazônia continues to yield positive results, generating sustainable food sources and income for thousands throughout the Amazon. By implementing supply chains that promote the use of community products, the project has already seen a notable increase in income generation for families.

A significant addition to TCFF’s network of partners this year is the Associação Médicos da Floresta (Forest Doctors Association) in the States of Rondônia and Roraima.

This partnership brings essential healthcare services, including ophthalmological, paediatric, and gynaecological care, to remote Indigenous communities. By focusing on improving access to vital healthcare for women and children, this collaboration aims to enhance the quality of life, self-esteem, and social inclusion for those who need it most.

Art as a Catalyst for Change

The artistic element of the campaign, a hallmark since its inception, continues to evolve. This year, Annabel’s will display Vik Muniz’s “Brazilian Forest, after Martin Johnson Heade (Live Cash), 2022” within the club’s reception. Muniz, a renowned artist and dedicated philanthropist, brings both artistic excellence and humanitarian commitment to this collaboration.

His artwork pays homage to the rugged beauty of the Brazilian rainforest, recreating 19th-century Brazilian landscape paintings by travelling artists. By reconfiguring symbolic fragments of money into new compositions, Muniz generates both familiarity and incongruity, prompting viewers to reflect on the complex relationship between economic interests and environmental conservation.

Raising a Glass for the Amazon

In a creative twist, Annabel’s has partnered with Altamura Distilleries Vodka to craft a distinctive collection of cocktails. Available throughout the month, these libations not only tantalize the palate but also contribute to the cause, with proceeds from their sales donated to TCFF. The offering includes:

  • Amazonia: A blend of Altamura Distilleries Vodka, Havana 3yo, Graviola Cordial, Acai, and Lemon
  • Tapajós: Featuring Altamura Distilleries Vodka, Honey Cupuaçu, Banana, Coconut, and Lime
  • Tocantins: A mix of Altamura Distilleries Vodka, Cachaca, Brazil Nut Orgeat, Mango, and Lime

These cocktails not only offer a taste of the Amazon but also serve as a conversation starter, encouraging patrons to engage with the campaign’s mission.

A Call for Continued Action

As the Annabel’s for The Amazon campaign enters its fifth year, it stands as a powerful reminder of the ongoing need for action to protect our planet’s most precious resource. The initiative has demonstrated that sustained, year-on-year efforts can drive meaningful change, bringing together the worlds of high society and grassroots activism in a unique and impactful way.

The campaign’s success continues to be measured not only in trees planted and meals distributed but in lives transformed and ecosystems preserved. It stands as a testament to the power of persistent, collective action and the potential for positive change when individuals and organisations commit to a shared vision over time.

Looking ahead, the Annabel’s for The Amazon campaign remains a beacon of hope in the face of ongoing environmental challenges. It serves as an annual reminder that every action, no matter how small, contributes to the preservation of our planet’s lungs and the protection of those who call the Amazon home.

As the burning feather in Annabel’s façade reminds us each September, time is of the essence. The Amazon’s future remains in the balance, but initiatives like this show that sustained effort can make a difference. Through continued commitment and collaboration, we work towards a future where the Amazon thrives, its communities prosper, and the delicate balance of our global ecosystem is maintained.

The Annabel’s for The Amazon campaign stands not just as an annual event but as a symbol of enduring hope and a call for sustained action in the face of one of our planet’s most pressing challenges. As we raise our glasses with the specially crafted Amazonian cocktails, we are reminded that change is possible, one tree, one meal, one action at a time.
