In a dazzling showcase of craftsmanship and cultural reverence, Rolls-Royce Motor Cars has unveiled the one-of-a-kind Phantom Extended, aptly named Phantom Dragon, to honour the Year of the Dragon.
This bespoke creation, commissioned by a discerning Chinese client, embodies the rich symbolism of the ancient Chinese legend of two dragons with a pearl, a motif celebrated across East Asia for its profound cultural significance. This masterpiece seamlessly intertwines tradition with the pinnacle of modern luxury.
A Testament to Cultural Sensitivity and Artistic Excellence
Rolls-Royce’s ability to respectfully integrate cultural iconography into its designs remains a hallmark of the brand. Martina Starke, Head of Bespoke Design at Rolls-Royce Motor Cars, captures this sentiment succinctly: “One of the Rolls-Royce brand’s signature strengths is creating products that sensitively and respectfully integrate iconography from specific cultures, interpreted through our own innovative crafts and design language.”
The Phantom Dragon exemplifies this ethos, showcasing a Bespoke Gallery with a floating dragon motif, achieved through the intricate art of marquetry. This technique, known for its complexity, adds depth to the design, making the dragon appear as though it is emerging from clouds of smoke. Such artistry is a testament to the unparalleled skill of the Bespoke designers, engineers, and craftspeople at Rolls-Royce.
This unique commission also underscores the brand’s strong presence in China, where the Private Office in Shanghai plays a pivotal role. As Starke notes, “Having a dedicated Rolls-Royce team in this region gives us a unique understanding of, and connection to, one of the world’s most significant luxury markets.” By blending Chinese cultural elements with contemporary international aesthetics, Rolls-Royce creates vehicles that resonate deeply with clients in the region.
A Fusion of Tradition and Innovation
The Phantom Dragon encapsulates the philosophy and achievements of its commissioning client, while also serving as a prelude to the centenary of the Phantom nameplate in 2025. At its core, this vehicle symbolises the synthesis of traditional Chinese iconography with Rolls-Royce’s distinctive creative language.
The vehicle’s design draws heavily from Chinese culture, which continues to influence the nation’s burgeoning luxury sector. This is particularly evident among younger consumers, who are increasingly captivated by Rolls-Royce’s ability to merge tradition with modernity.
Shuai Feng, Lead Bespoke Designer at Rolls-Royce’s Private Office Shanghai, emphasises this sentiment: “Our goal for this project was to express China’s most revered symbols and the client’s personal iconography impactfully yet respectfully, while also subtly incorporating Rolls-Royce’s design handwriting.”
The result is a vehicle that celebrates the rich legacy of Chinese culture while reflecting the unique tastes of its owner. It also highlights the value of the Shanghai Private Office, which bridges the gap between the craftsmanship of Goodwood and the cultural preferences of Chinese clients.
Dance of the Dragons: A Legendary Inspiration
The design of the Phantom Dragon draws inspiration from an ancient Chinese legend dating back over 3,000 years. The tale recounts the story of two dragons, protectors of humanity, who were gifted a divine pearl by the gods in recognition of their kindness.
Instead of hoarding the treasure, the dragons deferred to one another, embodying the virtues of generosity and humility. In a gesture of divine reward, the gods bestowed a second pearl upon the dragons, who ascended as deities.
The legend’s themes of power, fortune, purity, and harmony resonate deeply in Chinese culture. The interplay of the dragons symbolises the balance of Yin and Yang, reflecting a harmonious pursuit of enlightenment and fulfilment. These timeless principles are intricately woven into the fabric of the Phantom Dragon’s design.
Traditional Motifs Reimagined
The Bespoke Gallery in the Phantom Dragon is a masterful showcase of marquetry, comprising 297 individual pieces from four different wood species. An artisan at Rolls-Royce’s Goodwood facility dedicated three months to crafting this feature. The artwork depicts two dragons swirling amidst clouds, protecting the pearl represented by a bespoke clock.
The intricate details are achieved using a combination of Smoked Eucalyptus, Sycamore veneer, Ash burr, and Black Bolivar veneer, creating a sense of depth and movement.
This exceptional woodcraft extends throughout the vehicle’s interior, where high-gloss Smoked Eucalyptus elements and natural open-pore Canadel door panels highlight Rolls-Royce’s commitment to excellence. The design is further enhanced by Ardent Red and black leathers adorning the Serenity seats.
The client’s family name, rendered in ancient Chinese calligraphy, is meticulously embroidered onto the headrests in contrasting cotton thread, adding a deeply personal touch.
The Bespoke Starlight Headliner continues the theme, featuring an abstract depiction of two dragons rendered in red and white. This celestial composition comprises 768 red and 576 white fibre-optic lights, punctuated by 24 shooting stars, creating a mesmerising effect that mirrors the grandeur of the legend.
Exterior Elegance and Final Flourish
The Phantom Dragon’s exterior is equally breathtaking, finished in Iced Diamond Black. This exclusive paint finish creates a shimmering satin effect, adding an aura of understated sophistication to the vehicle. The bold contrast between the dramatic interior and the sleek exterior exemplifies Rolls-Royce’s mastery in crafting bespoke luxury vehicles.
Every detail of the Phantom Dragon reflects the brand’s dedication to artistry, cultural reverence, and innovation. As a celebration of the Year of the Dragon and a tribute to the Phantom’s enduring legacy, this one-of-one masterpiece sets a new benchmark in automotive luxury.
