Australia’s premier experiential travel group, Journey Beyond, has unveiled two groundbreaking developments set to redefine luxury tourism: the introduction of ultra-luxury train suites aboard its iconic rail services and the management of Monarto Safari Resort, a wildlife-focused retreat in South Australia.
Slated for debut in 2026 and 2025 respectively, these initiatives underscore the brand’s commitment to innovation, sustainability, and unparalleled guest experiences.
Redefining Luxury Rail Travel: The Australis and Aurora Suites
From April 2026, Journey Beyond’s legendary trains,The Ghan, Indian Pacific, and Great Southern, will welcome two new ultra-luxury suites: the Australis and Aurora. Designed to set a global benchmark in rail hospitality, these suites promise to elevate cross-continental travel with unprecedented space, bespoke amenities, and meticulous attention to detail.
The Australis Suite, heralded as the most luxurious in Australian rail history, triples the size of existing Platinum cabins. It features a separate bedroom with a fixed queen-sized bed, a full lounge area, a personal bar, and an ensuite with double vanity and premium Jurlique amenities.
Meanwhile, the Aurora Suite offers double the space of a Platinum cabin, blending comfort with sophistication through its lounge set, ensuite, and curated in-suite services. Both suites prioritise privacy and elegance, providing a “moving sanctuary” for travellers exploring Australia’s vast landscapes.
Design Excellence: Blending Art Deco with Australian Landscapes
Renowned global design firm Woods Bagot has infused the suites with a distinctive Australian identity, marrying art deco opulence with nods to the nation’s pastoral heritage.
Rosina Di Maria, Principal at Woods Bagot, explains, “Australian luxury is characterised by quiet confidence, quality, comfort, and attention to detail.” The interiors feature bespoke timber accents, stone masonry, iron filigree, and references to wool merchants through sheepskin and saddle leather finishes.
Coved ceilings and decorative cornices evoke timeless elegance, while expansive windows ensure guests remain connected to the ever-changing vistas outside. “The design captures the essence of the outback,” says Di Maria. “It’s about creating a sense of place, where the journey itself becomes part of the narrative.”
Unparalleled Amenities and Personalised Service
Suite guests will enjoy Champagne Bollinger La Grande Année, a premium Australian wine selection, and a personalised in-suite bar restocked daily. A dedicated butler caters to every need, from an exclusive unpacking service to in-room dining. Off-train experiences, such as private tours and sunset canapés amid the Outback, further enrich the journey.
David Donald, Journey Beyond’s Executive General Manager of Rail, emphasises the suites’ transformative potential: “These spaces are not just cabins, they’re a place to unwind, celebrate, and host loved ones. The Australis Suite even includes a writing desk and wardrobe, inviting guests to linger in comfort.”
A New Benchmark in Global Rail Hospitality
Chris Tallent, CEO of Journey Beyond, describes the suites as a “response to surging demand for international-calibre luxury.” He states, “The Australis and Aurora Suites position our trains among the world’s best. This is about exceeding global standards while staying true to Australia’s unique spirit.” Prices start from £6,042 per person for the Australis Suite and £4,090 for the Aurora Suite on a three-day Ghan expedition.
Monarto Safari Resort: A Sanctuary of Wildlife and Luxury
Complementing its rail innovations, Journey Beyond will manage Monarto Safari Resort, set to open in May 2025. Nestled within Monarto Safari Park’s Wild Africa precinct, the resort blends luxury accommodation with immersive wildlife encounters. Guests can observe southern white rhinos, cheetahs, giraffes, and more from their rooms or during guided safaris across 550 hectares of open plains.
The resort features 78 hotel rooms, 20 luxury tents, a world-class spa, thermal plunge pools, and conference facilities. Gerry Ryan OAM, the resort’s owner, notes, “Journey Beyond’s expertise in remote tourism ensures this will be a destination where conservation meets indulgence.”
Conservation and Sustainability at the Heart of the Experience
Aligned with Journey Beyond’s “Journey Lightly” ethos, the resort pledges to support wildlife preservation. A portion of each stay’s revenue funds Monarto Safari Park’s conservation programs, which focus on endangered species protection. Elaine Bensted, CEO of Zoos South Australia, praises the partnership: “This collaboration ensures guests contribute directly to safeguarding biodiversity while enjoying an unforgettable escape.”
Tailored Experiences for Every Traveller
From dawn safaris in custom-built vehicles to sundowner drinks overlooking watering holes, the resort curates bespoke adventures. Families, couples, and corporate groups alike can tailor their stays, whether seeking adrenaline-fuelled excursions or serene spa retreats. David Donald adds, “It’s more than a hotel,it’s a gateway to wild Africa in the heart of South Australia.”
Supporting Wildlife Preservation Through Tourism
By integrating eco-tourism with luxury, Journey Beyond reinforces its role as a steward of Australia’s natural heritage. As Chris Tallent asserts, “Our projects are rooted in respect for people, place, and planet. Every experience we design must honour that commitment.”
