Rosé; The pastel pink vin de table which encapsulates the curvaceous silhouette of a Summer sunset in a glass, swirled with the mellow flavour of floaty flirtation.

There are but merely just a scantily few, symphonious melodies that can be more evocative than the soft plug, of a blush hued rosé hitting chilled pure smooth crystal as it evokes that signature fragrant aura of leisurely alfresco luncheons, and the élan of glitterati Summer soirées all around the luxe realm from the sparkling shores of Portofino, to the glitzy Sunshine State town of Palm Beach.

But rosé is far more than a seasonal dalliance; is a cultivated art form, ancient tradition, and a modern fresh invigorating indulgence poured as freely on the gleaming decks of sun-soaked yachts, as it is in the fragrant botanical gardens of Provençal châteaux.

Light in hue but never in character, rosé today is a genre unto itself: elegant, expressive, and quietly rebellious where I had the golden opportunity to sip and savour on three pastel shades of 2024 sophistication, of the classic Whispering Angel, Minuty Prestige, and G de Galoupet.

A Snapshot Of The Blush

Long before it had became that glamorous emblem of poolside sophistication for bonny bon ton cliques to savour throughout those golden cloaked balmy hours, this delicately pink chic vino had prior to its time of coming to light, began its story as the wine of treasured classical antiquity with a swivel of rebellion, swirling back to the era of 600 BC.

It was for the seafarers and Phocaeans of ancient Greece, whom had arrived and graced their presence within a modern-day Marseille to introduce their treasured Greek winemaking techniques and grapevines, resulting in a more lightly hued wine that would likely make even the most up to the minute sommelier arch an eyebrow. Unlike their full-tilt red-making descendants, these graceful Hellenic hedonists had taken to becoming more partial to a delicate soft-hued “vin du pays” macerated for mere gentle moments before pressing, which honed in on offering a burst of refreshing sweet elegance sans the bold earthy drama. It wasn’t just a preference; but a philosophy where the Greeks believed in balance in all things including the liquid contents of your jewel encrusted goblet.

Fast-forward to the treasured chronicles of Ancient Rome where wine had played a key valuable role in Roman life, it was rosé which had gained a glittering prestige as not just a palatable glamorous refreshment, but also embodied an elite lifestyle symbol for illustrious native to enjoy during high society soirées before moving onto the Middle Ages. It was during this epoch where Cistercian monks had refined the craft to serene scrupulous precision, as vines clung to chalky soils with their hands stained with Grenache, Mourvèdre, and Tibouren. Unjust to simply be deemed as our average winemakers, they were considered cloistered artists making rosé as a hymn to nature, their steadfast dedication no sooner giving rise to the blush-hued masterpieces which would later woo the blue blooded aristocracy around the realm, and inspire 21st-century oenophiles from Tokyo to Tulum.

But the true café society renaissance marked its glossy attendance in the early 2000s, when a new generation of winemakers took hold of the traditional Provençal model and polished up it to luminous brilliance, before Whispering Angel finally ignited a global pink tinted love affair whilst Minuty injected a sultry dose of Riviera glamour, and G de Galoupet sought to bring the world rosé into the conscious eco-luxury spotlight. Today rosé is no longer “just a rosy coloured wine, but prestige in pastel with the complexity to rival Burgundy, and enough charisma to headline a wine list.

The Polished Classic; Whispering Angel 2024

To dismiss Whispering Angel as merely the most recognisable rosé in the world is like calling Chanel No. 5 just another luxury perfume; To however hail this epicurean soft shell shaded rosé as the poised ambassador of bonny wine elegance dropping with couture credentials, certainly makes for a more befitting testimony.

Inspired by the estate’s chapel adorned with ethereal winged figurines, Whispering Angel was meticulously created and brought to life in 2006 by Sacha Lichine, son of the legendary Alexis Lichine (a Bordeaux baron in his own right), where since its luxe genesis has paraded its radiant stature as the crown jewel of Château d’Esclans, nestled deep in the Var region of Provence. It was here that Sacha Lichine had the invigorating vision of a dry, yet smooth delicate rosé flowing with the powerful sensuality of silk, entwined with the ravishing swagger of a Bond girl which now finds itself chilling away in gleaming silver ice buckets adorning pristine superyacht decks in the billionaire playgrounds of Monte Carlo, and passed around like heady fragrant perfumes atop London’s lofty, pulse-pounding rooftop havens.

A rewarding intense flavour profile from the grapes of Grenache, Cinsault and Rolle (also known as Vermentino), the dainty yet deep fragrances of white peach and aromatic citrus blossom anchors in harmony  with tart sweet crushed strawberries, curled up with the mild “whisper” of spiced pink peppercorn to be savoured with an oceanic helping of meaty rich tuna tartare, or mellow creamed goats cheese cocooned in fluffed golden crisp pastry.

The Riviera In A Glass: Minuty Prestige Rosé 2024

Some wines love a little whisper whilst others make merry with a touch of sparkle. Minuty Prestige Rosé however, positively takes pleasure in shimmering inside a sense of understated glamour that only a true Riviera royalty can muster, having graced intricately adorned ice buckets around the French Riviera far sooner than those sun-kissed beach clubs had discovered Instagram handles.

The delectable Minuty story began its sweet-scented blossoming in 1936, when the Matton-Farnet family had acquired Château Minuty on the Saint-Tropez peninsula long before the jet-set harbour of Saint-Tropez had become a global euphemism for sun-drenched chic, to then during the time of the 1950s take pride in its whirlwind standing as THE, official supplier to the pedigreed Hôtel de Paris in Monaco’s Monte Carlo.

All sourced exclusively from hand-harvested estate-grown grapes in the balmy hills of Ramatuelle and Gassin, this beloved beverage comes faultlessly crafted using a wispy direct pressing practice that preserves the freshness of the fruits and an unmistakable saline whisper. This all the while also draws out the subtlety of the wine as this 2024 expression unearths a delicate, rose-gold tone with each effortless pour, with an intense perfume of ripe citrus peel and lemon hints of yellow rose, married with a scented symphony of white cherry and pink grapefruit to be enjoyed with smoked grilled meaty langoustines, or maybe a crisp hearty Niçoise salad.

Nature Bottled In Blush: G de Galoupet Rosé 2024

In a world which has become obsessed with surface-level glitz, G de Galoupet is the enigmatic beauty whom unabashedly thrives in arriving barefoot from the vineyard, whilst radiating with bonafide  authenticity. Owned by Moët Hennessy since the year of 2019, Château Galoupet is no ordinary estate, but an unfeigned heart thrilling love letter to the spheres of biodiversity, sustainability and the untamed magic of Provence. Located in the heart of the protected Massif des Maures, the château sits like a secret garden above the Mediterranean, while boasting majestic sweeping sea views amongst a colossal 69 hectare stretch of certified, organic vines.

This here isn’t just a story about terroir; but a revolution in rose which has remained settled on rewriting the esteemed rules of luxury with every eco-glamorous sip, and present to their vino connoisseurs a prestigious masterclass in precision and purity, not to forget their bottle creation made from 85% recycled glass, playing as a credible ode to raw, sustainable beauty.

Made from a harmonious blend of Grenache, Syrah and Tibouren, this toothsome medley takes to honouring both their prized heritage and enterprising innovation practices where fermentation takes place in both stainless steel and large oak casks, to add to the gentle complexity without sacrificing that signature freshness, resulting in a structured, gastronomic rosé that demands a proper table and conversation.

Unearthing a warning aroma of titillating citrus, sweet rose petal and a hint of rich pink guava. A graceful ballet of soft white peach, earthy wild herbs, and a mineral tension of limestone and sea spray dances on the palate, making for an impeccable gourmet companionship whether with mild brine octopus elevated with a tantalising twist of fresh lemon, creamed buttered burrata or perhaps, nothing at all, expect for the calming golden silence and a captivating vistas of the rippling emerald sea.

In Rosé We Trust

In a world that is persistently spinning that little bit more faster, our adored world of rosé serves as a reminder for pink drink enthusiasts to pause, indulge, and seek to revel in some flirtatious debauchery with the Summer sun without apology.

It is a wine that has not only transcended seasons and social circles all the while skipping effortlessly from tranquil private islands, to barefoot lunches under olive trees, but also beyond the blush has uncovered a slice of substance tangled up with priceless centuries of tradition, terroir, and transformation all bottled up in pale elegance.

Whether you’re sipping the ethereal charm of Whispering Angel, the understated sophistication of Minuty Prestige or the eco-luxe brilliance of G de Galoupet, this grandeur pink wine personifies philosophy in a glass to celebrate life’s in-between moments with a clink of crystal and a wink at history, as we raise our glasses to the art of leisure, luxury of simplicity, and the eternal allure of the rosé state of mind.
