Christie’s annual classic week is an event that art lovers from all over the globe eagerly anticipate every single year without fail. This year, from the 3rd until the 12th of July, Christie’s Classic Week 2018 Sale in London is one you will not want to miss. On offer is a vast collection of works dating back centuries and includes a large number of styles.


During the course of the Christie’s Classic Week 2018 Sale, Christie’s will host a total of 14 auctions, offering some of the most thought-provoking, vibrant, sought-after and aesthetically pleasing works ever created. With pencil sketches, oil paintings, water colour paintings, drawings, sculptures, furniture, decorative and ornamental boxes, books, manuscripts and much more on offer, Christie’s Classic Week 2018 Sale this summer is going to be hotter than ever.

While we don’t have time to cover each and every single auction on offer, we can take a look at some of what many consider to be some of the more popular sales.

Quentin Blake: A Retrospective; Forty Years of Alternative Versions

Here we have one of the most eagerly anticipated auctions of Classic Week, and one offered up by one of the most beloved children’s book illustrators and artists in all of Britain, and dare we say – the world. Quentin Blake: A Retrospective; Forty Years of Alternative Versions contains 178 unique works by Blake, including 30 selection of unique illustrations. Proceeds from this auction will go to three brilliant charities: House of Illustration, Roald Dahl’s Marvellous Children’s Charity, and Survival International. This collection will be open to the public and on view from the 7th to the 10th of July. Bidding takes place from the 3rd until the 12th.

Thomas Chippendale 300 Years

On the 5th of July is Thomas Chippendale 300 years, which will celebrate the creative genius of arguably the greatest furniture-maker to ever live, Thomas Chippendale himself. To celebrate the 300th anniversary of his birth, this collection will see 22 lots, and has estimates ranging from £5000 to £5 Million. The highlight of this lot will be Sir Rowland Winn’s Commode, which is estimated to fetch between £3 Million and £5 Million.

The Exceptional Sale

Christie’s Classic Week 2018 Sale Quentin Blake: A Retrospective; Forty Years of Alternative Versions
A unique rediscovered masterpiece by Louis XIV’s Royal sculptor François Girardon, Louis XIV on Horseback, Paris, circa 1690-1699, is believed to be the lost sculpture from the artist’s own collection, depicted in the famous engraving of the Galerie de Girardon, estimate: £7-10 million

Taking place also on July the 5th, we have the Exceptional Sale. This sale features a piece by Francois Girardon, who was the Royal Sculptor of Louis XIV. The work in question is the Louis on Horseback sculpture and was widely thought to have been the lost sculpture from the private collection of the artist. The second item is the Hercules Overcoming Achelous sculpture, and is a work by famous Florentine Sculptor Ferdinando Tacca. This piece was a gift from Louis XIV to his son, back in 1681. With the pieces with estimates respectively coming in at around £7 – 10 Million and £1 – 1.5 Million, July 5th could prove to be a very interesting day of the Christie’s Classic Week 2018 Sale indeed.
