Each season sees a plethora of trends come and go but rarely does a season see a theme, especially one over different Fashion Weeks. This year’s Spring Summer 2019 is one of these rare occurrences. A theme that has been running from Milan to New York and now to London Fashion Week, is that of retro. We have seen 70’s influences, De Stijl and all that in between. That being said the Erdem Spring Summer 2019 collection has taken its influence even further back to the Victorian era.
The Victorian era was a contradiction in itself. It was the great shift and even blend between a very moral-based society with strict rules and codes to live by with a secret revolution of self-indulgence. As with all things, the era’s fashion captured and relayed the time’s sentiments and ethos. Satin, which is a reflective solid material that reflects was combined with lace that while it covers, displays the hidden flesh beneath and absorbs. This trend contradicts with the recent social trend of stripping down and openly displaying as much as possible. The Erdem Spring Summer 2019 collection reminds us once again of the power of sensuality and that the anticipation and mere glimpses can have a far more intoxicating and beguiling effect than just displaying all for the world to see.
