London is a bustling metropolis where life can often feel like it’s travelling at 100mph. However, it’s also a city that’s bustling with green space too, more so than many other cities in the country and indeed Europe.

Utilising those and relaxing is so important these days, during a period where more and more of us are suffering with the likes of stress, anxiety, depression and addiction, with many of us even seeking help through the likes of a private rehab centre, therapists, councellors and support groups.

Cycling is a great way to combat various stresses and challenges, and is proven to be ideal as a coping mechanism and boosting mood. Across London there are dozens of great parks and trails for cycling, providing a great escape from the stresses and strains of daily life.

So if you’re looking to saddle up, here are five of the most relaxing cycle spots in London…

Richmond Park

One of the most famous cycling spots in London but also one of the most serene is Richmond Park. The royal park is over 2,500 acres and offers a range of terrain to enjoy, including grassland, ancient woodland and some great views of the city.

There’s a thriving population of deer in the park, which can be seen grazing near the cycling paths, while the Tamsin Trail is a great 12km circular route that is among the most popular routes for cyclist, getting a view of the entire park and it’s scenic vistas, as well as a great workout.

Regent’s Park

Heading into the heart of the city, Regent’s Park is a fantastic option and again is a hugely popular cycling spot, to the point where there is a group of 80s popstars who have a cycling club that ride around the park. So you may even spot a celeb on your ride!

The park itself covers 395 acres, and the paths are well-maintained. The Outer Circle is a 4.5km loop that is among the most popular trails for cyclists. It’s flat and great for doing a couple of loops on a lunch break.

Walthamstow Wetlands

If you want to remove yourself from the urban landscape a little more, the 211 hectares of Walthamstow Wetlands is a great choice. It’s actually the largest urban wetland in Europe and is not only a sanctuary for wildlife, but for cyclists too.

There are many cycle paths perfect for a leisurely ride, allowing you to explore the marshes, reed beds and reservoirs, taking in the gentle sounds of birdsong, the perfect soundtrack for someone looking to truly switch off.

The Thames Path

The Thames Path is one of London’s most iconic cycling routes, offering riders a chance to experience the city’s history and natural beauty. Stretching for nearly 180 miles from the Cotswolds to the Thames Barrier in Greenwich, the path offers a variety of routes for cyclists of all levels.

In London, the stretch between Putney Bridge and Hampton Court Palace is particularly scenic and tranquil.

This section of the Thames Path takes you through leafy riverside areas, past historic landmarks such as Kew Gardens and Hampton Court Palace, and offers stunning views of the river. The route is largely traffic-free, making it an ideal spot for a relaxing cycle, whether you’re looking for a short ride or a longer adventure.

The combination of riverside scenery and the gentle hum of the water makes this one of the most calming cycling experiences in the city.

Hampstead Heath

Hampstead Heath, one of London’s most beloved green spaces, offers cyclists a taste of the countryside within the city. Covering 790 acres, the Heath is known for its wild, untamed beauty, with rolling hills, ancient woodlands, and expansive meadows. Cycling here is a joy, with plenty of paths to explore, each offering its unique charm.

One of the highlights of cycling on Hampstead Heath is the climb to Parliament Hill, which rewards you with breathtaking panoramic views of London’s skyline. While the climb can be a bit challenging, the sense of achievement and the view from the top make it well worth the effort.

After descending, you can enjoy a leisurely ride around the Heath’s ponds and through its woodlands, taking in the tranquillity of this natural oasis.
