We chat to Designer Lashes’ Janette Vince to find out how long do eyelash extensions last and every other question you might have had.
The popularity of eyelash extensions has truly gone from strength to strength over the years but with so many options and types to choose from, it’s hard to know where to start. That’s not even talking about those myths and burning questions we all have but feel too shy to ask.
Well, we decided to sit down with London’s Queen of Lashes Janette Vince from Designer Lashes to dispel the untruths, share her tips and answer all of the lash extension questions you might have. Questions like How Long Do Eyelash Extensions Last? Let’s get straight into it.
Are Eyelash Extensions Worth It?
For many women the answer is a big yes! Apart from framing the eyes and making the eyes look much prettier, they save a considerable amount of time not having to use mascara every morning. Several of my clients don’t even bother with other makeup such as eyeshadow or eyeliner as they feel so much more confident with the extensions on.
Are Eyelash Extensions Bad And Does It Harm Your Natural Lashes?
Apart from questions like How Long Do Eyelash Extensions Last, the question about lashes being harmful to your natural lashes is asked a lot. If applied and looked after correctly, there’s no reason for them to damage the natural lashes. I have seen damage to lashes from technicians that are either built too heavy with the glue or they simply put far too heavy lashes on, particularly with Russian lashes.
I work with the lash cycle, which means I do not put extensions on baby lashes. This means when a client comes in for an infill, those baby lashes that were left to grow are now strong enough to take the weight of extensions and again the new baby lashes are left to re-grow for the next infill.
It is recommended to have a break from extensions every 6 months or so, however, I have several clients that really don’t want to be without them, in which case we recommend they use an eyelash growth serum whilst wearing the extensions in order to keep their lashes nice and strong.
What Eyelash Extension Types Are The Best?
I prefer using synthetic mink extensions rather than synthetic silk, they have a matt sheen, feel softer and have a more natural look. Silk extensions have a shiny sheen and in my opinion are more ‘plastic’ looking.
How Long Do Eyelash Extensions Take To Put On?
It depends on the skill of the technician and how long they have been doing eyelash extensions. It also depends on which eyelash extensions you choose, for individual one-on-one classic extensions, 90 minutes is usually enough time for an experienced technician. Although some clients who have an abundance of lashes may need more time.
For Russian eyelash extensions, this is a much more skilled procedure and therefore needs more time. These are very fine grade extensions, that are fanned out using a special set of tweezers and can be from 2 to 6 extensions, sometimes even more if it’s a very fine grade. Deciding on how many extensions to use depends on the look the client wants but more importantly, the condition of the client’s own lashes. The time needed for Russian extensions is from around 2 hours, but it is dependent on how full the client wants their lashes.
How Long Do Eyelash Extensions Last?
We recommend infills every three weeks, on average we lose 2 or 3 of our own lashes a day (our lashes grow and fall out in cycles) so by week 3 we would have lost over 60 lashes. Therefore, infills will be needed to replace these. Without having infills, the extensions will last somewhere between 4 to 8 weeks, depending on client’s skin type (oily skin will lose lashes quicker) and their aftercare.
How Long Does An Allergic Reaction To Eyelash Extensions Last And Is There Anything You Can Do To Avoid It?
It’s the glue rather than extensions that cause an allergic reaction. It tends to build up over time rather than having an allergic reaction without ever having been exposed the allergen. If you do get an allergic reaction, you will need to have the extensions taken off as soon as possible and depending on how severe the reaction is, you may need to see a doctor. It’s hard to say how long the reaction will last as it depends on how servere the reaction is and is also dependent on the person’s immune system.
Once you’ve had a reaction it’s unlikely you will be able to continue having extensions as you run the risk of getting a more severe reaction the next time. Changing the glue used to a ’sensitive’ glue is also unlikely to help, as this is for sensitivities such as watering eyes or mild irritation. Using an experienced technician that has the skill to use the minimum amount of glue necessary and skilled at lash placement so that the extensions are only stuck to the lash and not touching the skin will go someway of minimising the risk of getting a reaction.
What Are Your Tips On Eyelash Extensions Care?
- Avoid water on them for the first 24 hours and avoid steam and swimming for 48 hours.
- Use an oil free make-up remover and avoid getting any emollients, creams and oils on the lashes as these are the bonding agents worst enemy.
- Mascara can be used on single lashes (NEVER ON RUSSIAN LASHES), it should be water-based and just worn on the tips of the lashes, however, your lashes will last longer if you don’t use it.
- Do not use eyelash curlers or perm the lashes, it will break the lashes and/or crease them.
- Do not rub the lashes when washing your face, always pat dry if they get wet.
- The best type of eyeliner to use with extensions are felt tips pens or gel, avoid pencil eyeliners as they tend to be a bit oily and can clog between the lashes and therefore difficult to clean.
- If you wear eye make-up a powder-based eyeshadow is best.
