The Jean Paul Gaultier Couture Fall 2019 runway presentation started off as most of Gaultier’s shows does, an hour late and with a pre-party. Not a pre-party in the sense of a structured event beforehand at a separate location but as has become a ritual, right there on the ramp. Champagne flutes making the rounds through the crowd, not to mention the ice cream bars.
Following this festive vibe, guests took their seats, a hush went over the crowd and the lights went on. Now let’s be real, Jean Paul Gaultier has been called many things but conforming to the norm is most certainly not one of those. With the resurrection of streetwear, many prêt-à-porter collections have embraced this look but the couture shows have simply been looking on. That is, until now.
The Jean Paul Gaultier Couture Fall 2019 Collection is a celebration of the hoodie! Oh yes, you read that correctly. The Parisian couturier has taken the concept of the hoodie and re-imagined it in a plethora of new ways making it completely and utterly his own.
It is a dramatic and flamboyant collection which harmoniously blends feathers with fur-print as opposed to using real fur, slim-waistlines with accentuated silhouettes, organic shapes with tapered lines while making you want to snuggle up in these creations. The pieces are a celebration of self. An indulgence in self-expression. A blend of future and past that makes us beyond excited to see what his 50th-anniversary show in January will have to offer.
