Loro Piana celebrates its centenary with a Christmas transformation of Harrods, featuring 36 windows and two exclusive pop-ups until Jan 2025.
Italian luxury house Loro Piana has launched an extraordinary holiday installation at Harrods, marking its centenary year with a spectacular display that has run from 7th November to 2nd January 2025.
The ‘Workshop of Wonders’ transformation encompasses the entire Brompton Road façade, 36 windows, and multiple boutique spaces within the iconic London department store.
A Spectacular Façade Transformation
The centrepiece of the installation is a mesmerising 17-metre holiday tree adorned with flowing fabrics and festive ornaments, serving as the culmination of an intricate display that chronicles the journey of Loro Piana’s precious fibres.
The Brompton Road façade tells a compelling narrative, following these materials from their cloud-like origins through an elaborate mechanical transformation process that showcases the brand’s century-old expertise in textile craftsmanship.
The installation’s design draws inspiration from the 1920s, paying homage to the Maison’s founding era while incorporating contemporary elements that highlight its evolution. The carefully curated aesthetic features warm, woody textures complemented by subtle matte gold accents, creating an atmosphere that bridges traditional craftsmanship with modern luxury.
As darkness falls, the façade transforms through sophisticated lighting effects, enhancing the festive ambience and bringing the mechanical displays to life in a captivating nocturnal spectacle.
Windows That Tell a Global Story
Each of the 36 windows serves as a chapter in Loro Piana’s rich narrative, showcasing the brand’s global reach and commitment to excellence. The displays take visitors on a journey from the mountains of Mongolia to the plains of Australia and the heights of the Andes, before culminating in Italy, where these precious raw materials are transformed into luxurious finished products.
The windows feature innovative theatrical elements, combining marionette theatre mechanics with artisanal workshop aesthetics. Hand-painted puppets and hand-knitted cloudy backdrops create dreamy scenes that emphasise the brand’s dedication to craftsmanship. Notable displays include baby goats hopping across cashmere clouds and a giant spinning sun illuminating the story of the vicuña.
A particularly striking window showcases The Gift of Kings® story, recounting the historical journey of Merino sheep to New Zealand and Australia in the late 18th century. This display highlights the annual Loro Piana Record Bale Award, which recognises the finest fibre produced each year, demonstrating the brand’s ongoing commitment to excellence in wool production.
Masters of Fibers and Global Excellence
The installation prominently features the story of Loro Piana’s Masters of Fibers, skilled artisans and communities worldwide who contribute to the brand’s exceptional raw materials.
A notable highlight is the narrative of Fiona Gardner, a pioneering New Zealand farmer who specialised in developing dark-coloured sheep for the Pecora Nera® line, producing naturally undyed fibres in rich earth tones.
In the main window, a rotating globe atop a miniature version of the Loro Piana factory in Quarona, Italy, illustrates the global nature of the brand’s operations. The iconic Harrods Green Man presides over this display, symbolising the enduring partnership between these two luxury institutions.
Exclusive Collections and Special Editions
For this momentous occasion, Loro Piana has developed an extensive range of exclusive products for Harrods. The collections span ready-to-wear, accessories, and home goods, incorporating subtle British influences while maintaining the brand’s signature Italian elegance. A special colour palette features the iconic Harrods green alongside festive reds and classic neutrals.
The women’s collection includes hand-embroidered silk gowns and knitted column dresses, complemented by delicately embroidered footwear featuring thistle flowers in gold. The men’s line showcases sophisticated tuxedos and formal wear, alongside the iconic White Sole shoes in exclusive natural shades.
Accessories include special editions of the Extra Pocket, Extra Bag, Bale, Ghiera, and Loom bags, complemented by distinctive leather goods and jewellery.
Interactive Pop-Up Experiences
Two distinctive pop-up stores within Harrods offer immersive experiences for visitors. The Door 6 Pop-Up celebrates craftsmanship with workshop-inspired displays and offers exclusive accessories, including personalised versions of the iconic Grande Unita cashmere scarf. The space features an authentic leather worktable with overhead lighting and an industrial wheel displaying leather goods, creating an authentic workshop atmosphere.
The Door 9 Pop-Up focuses on the art of gifting, featuring a bookable journey through Loro Piana’s world of fibres and crafting. Visitors can explore holiday trees wrapped in wool and cashmere, and participate in interactive workshops where they can create their own holiday decorations using the Maison’s iconic fibres.
The pop-up also introduces the Master Puppet, set to become a collector’s item, alongside an array of stuffed animals and festive decorations crafted from Cashfur, wood, and 3D-printed materials.
New Boutique Launches
The celebration includes the opening of two new permanent boutiques within Harrods. The Loro Piana Interiors boutique showcases the complete “Art of Good Living” collection in a refined space featuring oak and walnut finishes, Tela Bubka, and Buffalo leather accents.
The boutique offers exclusive home décor, textiles, and meticulously crafted game sets, including hand-inlaid chess and backgammon boards.
The Kids Collection boutique presents a vibrant space with orange accents against neutral tones, offering luxury childrenswear for ages from toddler to 12 years.
The collection includes parkas, embroidered shearling vests, cashmere sweater dresses, and miniature versions of adult designs, maintaining the brand’s commitment to quality across all age ranges.
A Special Focus on Young Families
The temporary Newborn pop-in presents a sophisticated take on infant clothing and accessories, highlighted by an exclusive collaboration with Inglesina.
This partnership has produced a luxury stroller-bassinet ensemble that combines Inglesina’s 60-year expertise in child comfort with Loro Piana’s premium materials and design aesthetic.
The stroller features water-repellent linen and cotton canvas with the classic Suitcase Stripe motif, complemented by an exclusive removable Cashfur Winter kit for additional comfort during cold weather.
Legacy of Excellence
This elaborate holiday installation represents more than just seasonal decoration; it’s a celebration of Loro Piana’s century-long commitment to excellence in luxury textiles and craftsmanship.
Founded in 1924 by Pietro Loro Piana, the brand has maintained its position as a symbol of Italian excellence while continuously innovating within the luxury sector.
The Workshop of Wonders installation at Harrods serves as both a retrospective of the brand’s heritage and a showcase of its contemporary relevance, demonstrating how traditional craftsmanship can be presented in a modern, engaging way.
As both Harrods and Loro Piana celebrate significant anniversaries – Harrods its 175th and Loro Piana its centenary – this collaboration represents a meeting of two luxury institutions at the pinnacle of their respective fields.
The celebration is further commemorated through the release of Loro Piana’s first book, “Master of Fibers,” published by Assouline as part of their Ultimate Collection.
This handcrafted volume documents the family’s journey from wool trading to becoming a leading luxury house, providing a fitting tribute to a century of excellence in textile craftsmanship.
