In the heart of Miami’s bustling fashion scene, the Miami Design District (MDD) has recently embarked on its eighth annual Fashion Strikes Cancer event series on Sunday, October 1st.
This remarkable event series marks the beginning of a month-long tribute dedicated to supporting the noble cause championed by the Breast Cancer Research Foundation (BCRF). As the leading breast cancer organization in the United States, BCRF is unwavering in its mission to eradicate breast cancer through the advancement of groundbreaking research.
A Visionary’s Mission: Fashion Strikes Cancer by Angeles Almuna
Fashion visionary, stylist, and resilient breast cancer survivor, Angeles Almuna, conceived the idea behind Fashion Strikes Cancer. Her mission was clear – to provide solace and inspiration to those currently battling breast cancer, those who have triumphed over it, and those who have sadly lost loved ones to this disease. Angeles Almuna’s determination and courage have been the driving force behind this remarkable event series.
Honoring LaTonya Davis: A Survivor’s Triumph Over Adversity
This year, Fashion Strikes Cancer will pay tribute to LaTonya Davis, a remarkable six-year survivor of triple-negative breast cancer. LaTonya’s journey was marred by the painful loss of her mother and her only sister to the same disease. However, her spirit remained unbroken. Drawing on her background as a former collegiate sprinter, LaTonya faced cancer as a formidable adversary – strong and intimidating, yet ultimately beatable.
LaTonya Davis has not only conquered cancer but has also earned the title of ‘CDC Foundation 2021 Cancer Free Challenge Honorable Mention’ winner. She is a proud graduate of the ‘National Breast Cancer Coalition Project Lead’ program and serves as a Komen Advocacy Ambassador.
Moreover, LaTonya has taken on a pivotal role as the host of “The Breast Talk Ever,” a purpose-driven podcast that celebrates entrepreneurs committed to making a difference in the cancer community. In an exciting development, LaTonya is also in the process of creating her own jewellery collection, with a portion of the proceeds dedicated to funding mammograms and breast ultrasounds for uninsured women in underserved communities.
Show of Support Throughout October
Throughout the month of October, the Miami Design District (MDD) will be a beacon of support for breast cancer awareness. The neighbourhood’s styling suite will be bathed in pink, serving as a visual reminder of the cause. Meanwhile, MIA Market will go the extra mile by offering a speciality pink menu that includes “The Pale Rosé” and a carefully crafted pink cocktail featuring ATIAN Rose Gin.
A commendable gesture, MIA Market will generously donate $1 from each glass of “The Pale Rosé” and every ATIAN Rose Gin cocktail sold to benefit BCRF. In a harmonious collaboration, ATIAN Rose Gin will also contribute $1 from every ATIAN Rose Gin featured cocktail to the Dolphins Challenge Cancer.
The Grand Finale: MDD’s Exclusive Fashion Show
Crowning this month-long tribute is an exclusive invite-only fashion show, a splendid collaboration between MDD and renowned designer Valeria Krasavina. Sponsored by Poggi Design, this remarkable event will grace the fashion scene on October 26th. Following the fashion show, the event will seamlessly transition into a fashion exhibit, open for viewing until Sunday, October 29th.
Valeria Krasavina, an emerging designer, has joined forces with MDD and Fashion Strikes Cancer for the fourth consecutive year. This year’s show promises to be particularly special as it marks Krasavina’s debut as a fashion designer. Adding to the allure, renowned furniture design store Luminaire will contribute 150 chairs to enhance the guest experience during the fashion show.
In conclusion, the Miami Design District’s Fashion Strikes Cancer event series stands as a testament to the resilience of individuals like LaTonya Davis and the unwavering commitment of the community to support the Breast Cancer Research Foundation’s vital mission. Throughout the month of October, MDD’s vibrant initiatives and heartfelt tributes will shine a light on the cause, bringing hope and inspiration to all touched by breast cancer.
