Paradores invests £200M in renovations, sees UK tourism surge, and shifts focus to inland destinations ahead of its 2028 centennial celebration.

Paradores Hotels & Restaurants has unveiled an ambitious renovation plan worth over €230 million (approximately £200 million) as it gears up for its centennial celebration in 2028.

This significant investment comes amidst a surge in international tourism, particularly from the UK market, and a shift in traveller preferences towards inland and nature-centric destinations.

Record-Breaking Summer Season and UK Tourism Surge

The summer of 2024 has proven to be a landmark period for Paradores, with the company reporting impressive growth across various metrics. International tourism saw a 4% increase compared to the previous year, with British visitors leading the charge with a remarkable 9% rise.

This surge has propelled the UK to become the second-largest international market for Paradores, trailing only behind France.

Raquel Sánchez, President of Paradores, expressed her enthusiasm for the upcoming renovations: “Paradores is set to embark on an ambitious renovation plan in 2025, aimed at revitalizing the network’s iconic establishments in preparation for its centenary in 2028. Over the next three years, we will focus on modernizing and enhancing these historic sites, ensuring they receive the care and attention they deserve as cultural and heritage landmarks. This initiative will allow Paradores to continue offering exceptional experiences while preserving the essence and beauty of these jewels of our national heritage.”

Paradores achieved an average occupancy rate of over 86% during the summer season, which ran from July to September. This represents a one-point increase from the same period in 2023. The company’s robust performance in a competitive tourism landscape was underscored by a 3.6% increase in revenue, which was concurrent with the occupancy increase.

Shifting Travel Trends: Nature and History Take Centre Stage

One of the most notable trends observed during the summer season was the outperformance of inland, nature-focused, and historical destinations compared to traditional sun and beach locations. This shift in traveller preferences aligns with a growing global trend towards experiential and sustainable tourism.

Paradores in Northern Spain emerged as the clear winners, boasting an impressive 91.4% occupancy rate in July and August 2024 – the highest across the entire network. This success can be attributed to the region’s rich cultural heritage, stunning landscapes, and the increasing appeal of lesser-known destinations among discerning travellers.

The company’s ability to attract new visitors has been particularly noteworthy, with 42% of summer guests being first-time patrons of Paradores. This influx of new clientele suggests that the brand’s unique offering – a blend of historical significance, modern amenities, and strategic locations – continues to resonate with a diverse range of travellers.

Comprehensive Renovation Plan

The €230 million investment plan, developed in partnership with Turespaña, represents one of the largest undertakings in Paradores’ history. The comprehensive renovations will target 16 locations, including some of the most iconic properties in the network.

Among the establishments slated for renovation are Parador de Santiago de Compostela, Parador de Nerja, Parador de Arties, Parador de Cervera de Pisuerga, Parador de Olite, Parador de Tortosa, and Parador de Santillana del Mar. These renovations aim to align the properties with modern customer expectations while enhancing energy efficiency, sustainability, and accessibility.

Furthermore, the investment will expedite Paradores’ digital transformation, guaranteeing that the properties’ historic appeal is enhanced by state-of-the-art technology and services.

Commitment to Sustainable Tourism

Paradores’ success in promoting year-round tourism and revitalising less crowded areas underscores the company’s commitment to sustainable tourism practices. By diversifying its offerings and maintaining a strong focus on quality and respect for local environments, Paradores has positioned itself as a leader in responsible tourism development across Spain.

This approach not only benefits the company but also contributes to the broader goals of sustainable tourism, including reducing the environmental impact of tourism, supporting local economies in less-visited regions, preserving cultural heritage and traditions, and promoting authentic and meaningful travel experiences.

Looking Ahead: Paradores’ Vision for the Future

As Paradores approaches its centennial in 2028, the company’s strategic investments and adaptive approach to changing travel trends position it well for continued success.

Paradores is not only preserving its rich heritage but also actively influencing the future of Spanish tourism, as evidenced by the renovation plan and the observed shift towards inland and nature-centric destinations.

The increased interest from international markets, particularly the UK, presents an opportunity for Paradores to further establish itself as a premier destination for discerning travellers seeking authentic Spanish experiences. By blending historical charm with modern amenities and a commitment to sustainability, Paradores is poised to meet the evolving demands of 21st-century tourism.

As Paradores embarks on this ambitious renovation journey, the company stands at the cusp of a new era in its storied history. The €230 million investment plan, coupled with the encouraging growth in international tourism and the shift towards diverse, experiential travel, sets the stage for a dynamic and prosperous future.

The success of Paradores’ strategy – focusing on quality, sustainability, and the unique character of each location – serves as a model for the broader tourism industry. As travellers increasingly seek authentic, meaningful experiences that go beyond traditional sun and beach holidays, Paradores’ network of historic and nature-centric properties is well-positioned to meet this demand.

Paradores is not only commemorating its past but also actively influencing its future as its centenary approaches, guaranteeing that the subsequent century will be as distinguished as the first. Exceptional experiences for future generations of travellers are guaranteed by the company’s dedication to the preservation of Spain’s cultural heritage and its embrace of innovation and sustainability.
