Once owned by Indian royalty, the remarkable 23.24-carat, beautiful deep blue pear-shaped diamond is destined to create auction history at Christie’s Geneva this May with an estimated $35-50 million.

Few announcements in the rarefied realm of great gemstones generate the buzz that has greeted Christie’s most recent disclosure. The venerable auction house has revealed what many believe to be the jewellery event of the decade: the forthcoming auction of the Golconda Blue, a stunning 23.24-carat fancy vivid blue diamond the biggest of its kind ever to be put on sale.

Set to lead Christie’s Magnificent Jewels sale on May 14, 2025, at the Four Seasons Hotel des Bergues in Geneva, this remarkable gemstone has weight in history and an estimated value of $35–50 million. Still, as those who know the higher levels of the jewellery business are aware, such jewels sometimes surpass all expectations when the hammer falls.

A Diamond with Royal Ancestral History

The intriguing provenance of the Golconda Blue, recently discovered by Christie’s experts and firmly anchored in Indian royal history, distinguishes it from just being a great diamond. The diamond’s history begins with Yeshwant Rao Holkar, the Maharaja of Indore, a member of the well-known Holkar dynasty distinguished for their elegant way of life and global tastes throughout the 1920s and 1930s.

The Maharaja was a well-known Knight of the Order of the Indian Empire who travelled extensively outside, developing a strong respect for Western art, design, and fine jewellery. Beginning with his father’s purchase of the renowned Indore Pear diamonds from Chaumet in 1913, this gratitude showed itself in a lifetime engagement with esteemed Parisian jewellery shops.

When the Maharaja commissioned a diamond bracelet set, including his own 23-carat pear-shaped Golconda blue diamond on another visit to Chaumet, his personal link to the diamond world deepened in 1925. This would start the stone’s recorded trip across some of the most eminent private collections in some of history.

The Art Deco Link

The narrative of the Golconda Blue becomes especially intriguing in 1933 when Yeshwant Rao Holkar named the esteemed French jeweller Mauboussin his official jeweller. For the Golconda Blue and other Maharaja collection pieces, this collaboration would prove transforming.

Drawn to the Maharaja’s appreciation of avant-garde design, Mauboussin reinterpreted many of his valued stones to create a remarkable necklace combining the Indore Pears with the Golconda Blue. Wearing this Art Deco masterwork in a now-iconic portrait by Bernard Boutet de Monvel, Sanyogitabai Devi of Indore (1914–1937) immortalised it.

The picture of the Maharani sporting the magnificent sautoir necklace catches not only the exceptional beauty of the Golconda Blue but also the sophisticated elegance that defined Indian royal fashion during this period of transformation when Eastern royalty embraced modernist Western design aesthetics.

One Stone That Captivated Harry Winston

The remarkable voyage of the diamond carried on when the Maharaja worked with another great name in the jewellery industry, Harry Winston. Winston bought the Indore Pears from the Maharaja in 1946, then the 23-carat blue diamond known as the Golconda Blue the following year in January 1947.

Later, Winston sold the blue diamond in a brooch beside a matching 25-carat white diamond to the Maharaja of Baroda. Winston had a remarkable eye for great stones. Winston later bought the brooch, rebuilt it, and sold it to its present owner, effectively turning the narrative once more.

Now, more than a century after its first known appearance in the Maharaja of Indore’s collection, this fabled blue diamond is on auction for the very first time. Set in a striking modern ring created by renowned Parisian designer JAR, the Golconda Blue has been reinvented for modern tastes rather than reflecting its historical context.

The Limited Availability of Golconda Diamonds

“Once in a lifetime, exceptional noble gems of this kind arrive on the market,” says Head of Jewellery at Christie’s International, Rahul Kadakia. “Christie’s has had the privilege of presenting some of the most valuable Golconda diamonds worldwide, including the Archduke Joseph, the Princie, and the Wittelsbach over the period of 259 years. The Golconda Blue is really one of the rarest blue diamonds in the world, with its Royal background, remarkable colour, and great size.

The name “Golconda” describes diamonds from the fabled Indian mines, renowned for generating stones of unmatched clarity and quality. With allusions in a Sanskrit book from the fourth century, these remarkable jewels have a legacy going back millennia. Alexander the Great set the Western world’s ongoing obsession with diamonds when he transported them from India to Europe in 327 BCE.

Marco Polo had notably described in his voyage notes the exquisite beauty of Indian diamonds by 1292 AD. Today, the Golconda Blue is not only a natural wonder but also a legendary gem with a provenance spanning continents, empires, and centuries.

The World Trip Before Sale

The Golconda Blue will be on a worldwide exhibition tour before arriving at the auction block in Geneva, providing collectors and aficionados unique chance to see this ancient gemstone. Immediately before the sale, the diamond will be on display at Christie’s Hong Kong from April 25–26; next appearances will be at Christie’s Bangkok from April 28–30; Christie’s New York from May 2–4; and Christie’s Geneva from May 9–14.

The long tour reflects both the worldwide attraction of such a remarkable work and Christie’s awareness that prospective buyers of a stone of this quality will probably want to view it personally before the auction. This exhibition tour may be the only chance for many collectors to witness the Golconda Blue in person before it maybe disappears into another private collection for decades to come.

A Market All Set for Records

The timing of this unique offer falls on a strong market for outstanding coloured diamonds, especially those with historical relevance. Blue diamonds have often set world records at auction.

Not only is the Golconda Blue remarkably large, but it also combines outstanding colour, historical provenance, and the fact that it has never before shown at auction. These elements produce exactly the kind of story that often motivates competitive bidding among the most eminent collectors around.

Based on estimates of $35–50 million, the diamond ranks among the most costly jewels ever put on sale. However, industry analysts point out that stones of this quality and historical value may fetch prices far above their pre-sale projections, especially in cases of numerous motivated bidders vying for what is basically an unrepeatable purchase opportunity.

The Modern Context

Although the historical relevance of the Golconda Blue adds much of its attraction, Christie’s choice to show it in a modern environment by JAR offers an interesting contrast of history and present. With just a little annual production, American-born Parisian jeweller Joel Arthur Rosenthal’s brand JAR is considered as one of the most unique jewellery designers in the world.

Renowned for his perfectionism, creative ideas, and superb pavé work, JAR’s designs are much sought after by collectors all across. By putting the ancient Golconda Blue in a modern JAR environment, the diamond’s regal Indian legacy is bridged with modern fine jewellery aesthetics, therefore extending its appeal to both conventional collectors and those looking for more modern designs.

The environment itself seems to be very small but spectacular, allowing the remarkable blue diamond to remain the unquestionable centre point while offering a modern backdrop for this ancient stone.

The Legacy Persists.

The Golconda Blue is evidence of the timeless appeal of great stones as it gets ready for its auction debut. From gracing Indian royalty during the height of the Art Deco period to being reinterpreted by the legendary Harry Winston and now appearing in a modern setting by one of today’s most revered jewellery designers, the stone continues to change while retaining historical relevance.

The forthcoming sale marks not only a transaction but also a turning point in the centuries-long journey of the stone, the point at which it will most likely set a new benchmark for blue diamonds at auction and add still another chapter to its already amazing past.

The sale of the Golconda Blue offers collectors and jewellery aficionados worldwide a once-in-a-generation chance to buy not only a remarkable gemstone but also a piece of history linking civilisations, continents, and centuries using the enduring language of great 1.

Now under preparation for its moment in the limelight at Christie’s Geneva on May 14, 2025 – a day that might very well represent another turning point in auction history – the world watches with expectation. This is a remarkable blue diamond.
