Rolls-Royce Motor Cars has revealed Project Nightingale, the inaugural offering in their exclusive Coachbuild Collection. This two-seat convertible combines the marque’s legendary design philosophy with electric propulsion technology to create an entirely new expression of open-air luxury.

Limited to just 100 handcrafted examples worldwide, Project Nightingale draws inspiration from the experimental spirit of Sir Henry Royce‘s legendary ‘EX’ motor cars of the 1920s, whilst embracing the aesthetic principles of Streamline Moderne design. The result is a motor car that feels both timelessly elegant and refreshingly contemporary.

A Name Steeped in History and Artistry

The designation ‘Nightingale’ carries profound significance within the Rolls-Royce story. Named after Le Rossignol (French for ‘the nightingale’), it honours the designers’ and engineers’ residence near Henry Royce‘s winter retreat on the prestigious Côte d’Azur. This connection to the marque’s founding father extends beyond mere nomenclature.

Speaking about the project’s ambitious vision, Chris Brownridge, Chief Executive of Rolls-Royce Motor Cars, explains: “Some of the most discerning Rolls-Royce clients in the world asked us for our most ambitious work. We responded by bringing three things together that have never coexisted within our brand: the complete design freedom of coachbuilding, our powerful, near-silent all-electric powertrain, and a uniquely potent yet serene expression of open-top motoring.”

He continues: “Achieving this required the same audacious mindset that drove our co-founder, Sir Henry Royce, to create his radically different experimental ‘EX’ motor cars of the 1920s. Project Nightingale shares the spirit of those landmark projects and is the most extravagant expression of what Rolls-Royce is capable of today.”

Drawing Inspiration from the Jazz Age

The design philosophy reaches back to the halcyon days of the 1920s, specifically to two remarkable prototypes: the 16EX and 17EX. These experimental motor cars, created in 1928 at the height of the Jazz Age, embodied Henry Royce‘s audacious ambition to achieve unprecedented speed for the marque. Capable of exceeding 90 miles per hour, these aluminium-bodied torpedoes established design principles that continue to influence luxury automotive design today.

The distinctive red badges adorning these historic ‘EX’ models (a tradition now continued with Project Nightingale) signified their experimental status and rarity. From these legendary machines, contemporary Rolls-Royce designers have distilled three fundamental principles: ‘Upright to flowing’, ‘Central fuselage’, and ‘Flying wings’.

Domagoj Dukec, Director of Design at Rolls-Royce Motor Cars, articulates the balance achieved in translating these historic principles: “Project Nightingale is built on the design principles that define this marque at its most compelling. Grand proportions, absolute surface discipline, and a clarity of line that rewards the closest attention. And yet, it takes them somewhere entirely new. For me, this landmark motor car feels both inevitable and completely unexpected, and it will shape everything that follows.”

Monolithic Beauty Meets Streamline Moderne

The aesthetic foundation rests firmly upon the principles of Streamline Moderne design. That sophisticated evolution of Art Deco prioritised precise lines and uninterrupted forms over decorative embellishment. This design philosophy, which flourished in the late 1920s and 1930s, finds perfect expression in Project Nightingale’s sheer, monolithic volumes.

At 5.76 metres in length (virtually identical to the flagship Phantom saloon), Project Nightingale dedicates its entire generous proportions to the sublime experience of two-seat convertible motoring. The transition to electric propulsion has liberated designers from the constraints of traditional automotive architecture.

A Commanding Presence: The Front Elevation

The front elevation presents a bold reinterpretation of Rolls-Royce’s most iconic design elements. The Pantheon Grille, measuring nearly a metre in width, appears carved from a single block of stainless steel, its 24 deeply-set vanes creating dramatic shadows that shift with changing light conditions.

This monumental grille sits upon what designers term a ‘structural plinth’. A geometric foundation that deliberately evokes the great Art Deco skyscrapers.

The Spirit of Ecstasy figurine receives particularly thoughtful treatment, integrated atop the grille within a subtly recessed section. Her lines flow backwards, dissolving seamlessly into the bonnet’s surface as though she were moving through water.

Perhaps the most progressive statement appears at the outermost edges of the front wings: slender, vertically-oriented headlamp assemblies that represent a significant departure from conventional luxury car design. These innovative lighting solutions represent the evolution of automotive lighting technology at the luxury segment’s pinnacle. These are emphasised by polished stainless-steel bands that trace the motor car’s entire length.

The Torpedo Profile: Power and Grace United

In profile, Project Nightingale reveals its true character as a driver-oriented torpedo, where an expansive bonnet flows into a dramatically raked windscreen framed by elegant stainless-steel quarterlights inspired by the celebrated Phantom Drophead Coupé. The compact two-seat cabin sits deep within the body.

A defining characteristic is the continuous hull line that flows uninterrupted from front to rear, positioned intentionally high to create the sensation of being enveloped within the motor car’s protective embrace.

The 24-inch wheels (the largest ever fitted to a Rolls-Royce) strike a considered contrast against the serene bodywork. Their directional design draws inspiration from yacht propellers viewed from beneath the waterline, creating forms that appear in continuous motion even when stationary.

Engineering Artistry: The Rear Design

The rear section demonstrates how functional engineering can become sculptural artistry. The surfacing swells around the rear wheel arches, creating an impression of planted, muscular strength that perfectly balances the overall design’s inherent grace.

The Piano Boot (so named for its sideways-opening cantilever mechanism) transforms the mundane act of accessing luggage storage into a ceremonial moment of arrival. This attention to ritual and theatre exemplifies Rolls-Royce’s understanding that luxury encompasses every aspect of ownership.

A particularly sophisticated touch appears in the Aero Afterdeck. A bold carbon fibre diffuser that ensures high-speed stability without requiring a traditional spoiler.

Revolutionary Serenity: The Electric Experience

The transition to fully electric propulsion represents far more than mere powertrain substitution. It fundamentally transforms the character of open-air motoring. Rolls-Royce engineers describe the experience of driving early Project Nightingale prototypes with the roof lowered as akin to travelling by sailing yacht. Virtually silent mechanically, with wind noise all but eliminated.

This extraordinary quietness reveals subtleties previously masked by internal combustion engines: the sound of ocean waves breaking on distant shores, the movement of air through trees, the particular silence of open countryside at speed. And most poetically, the chorus of birdsong that inspired the motor car’s most distinctive interior feature.

The convertible soft top incorporates unique sound-deadening materials combining cashmere, fabric, and high-performance composites. Paired with the silent electric drivetrain, this creates a serene experience whether the roof is raised or lowered.

The Interior Suite: Translating Song into Light

The inspiration for Project Nightingale’s interior centrepiece emerged from an unexpected source. During early prototype testing, designers discovered they could hear birdsong with unusual clarity. Given the motor car’s name, this sparked intensive study of nightingale recordings and their distinctive sound-wave patterns.

This research culminated in the Starlight Breeze suite, a flowing constellation comprising 10,500 individual ‘stars’ in three subtly varied sizes. Named after the gentle air movement suggested by nightingale song, this ambient illumination pattern draws directly from analysed soundwave forms.

The Starlight Breeze illumination sits within a sculptural form called the ‘Horseshoe’, which rises behind the seats to frame occupants in a protective architectural gesture. Leather door cards feature raised sections reminiscent of finely crafted saddles, a motif continued through the centre console’s split armrest.

Jewelled Precision: Interior Craftsmanship

Every interior detail receives the same meticulous attention as the motor car’s exterior sculpture. The Spirit of Ecstasy rotary controller, revealed when the armrest glides rearwards automatically upon door opening, features a tactile stainless-steel collar with four grooves reminiscent of contemporary haute joaillerie.

This jewelled treatment extends throughout the interior to the gear selector and the sparingly curated five rotary controls total. Polished individual aluminium cupholders, machined from billet, add further gem-like accents.

Bespoke Excellence: The Côte d’Azur Inspiration

The example presented demonstrates Project Nightingale’s creative potential through a carefully considered colour palette that pays homage to both the motor car’s heritage inspiration and its contemporary character. The Côte d’Azur Blue paint (drawing inspiration from the experimental 17EX of 1928) presents as a pale, solid blue infused with subtle red flakes that reveal themselves in changing light.

The interior evokes the luminous atmosphere of the French Riviera through soft pastel Charles Blue seats paired with warm Grace White tones. Deep Navy seat inserts provide contrast and depth, whilst delicate flashes of Peony Pink (inspired by wild Riviera blooms) appear within the fascia surround and headrests.

Openpore Blackwood, laid in an upward-opening ‘V’ pattern, encourages the eye towards the sky above.

Exclusivity and Experience

Project Nightingale represents more than extraordinary automotive engineering. It creates an exclusive community. The 100 clients selected for this programme (individuals united by their appreciation for design excellence and Rolls-Royce heritage) participate in a multi-year journey of curated gatherings and private events in the world’s most desirable destinations.

Each of the 100 examples will be meticulously curated with its commissioning client, featuring an entirely new colour and material palette reserved exclusively for this Coachbuild Collection. These bespoke expressions will never appear on any other Rolls-Royce motor car.

For those who enjoy the ultimate in luxury transportation, whether by land or sea, Project Nightingale joins an elite category alongside sophisticated superyachts with groundbreaking technology that redefine the pinnacle of bespoke luxury experiences.

Looking Forward: The Promise of Innovation

As Project Nightingale enters its global testing and validation programme this summer, it signals the beginning of Rolls-Royce’s Coachbuild Collection story. This initiative responds to a growing community of passionate clients who seek Rolls-Royce design at its most ambitious and uncompromising.
