The southernmost region of Portugal, the Algarve, is a true paradise for hiking enthusiasts. Take a moment to imagine the golden beaches and unique rock formations along the coast, as well as charming villages surrounded by rural landscapes. Yes, the Algarve really has it all. And, to help you experience its diversity fully, here are some of the most scenic long-distance walking routes in the area.

The Rota Vicentina Routes

The Rota Vicentina is one of Portugal’s premier walking routes, hugging the wild Atlantic coast through both Algarve and Alentejo regions. This magnificent network includes biking and walking trails as well as attracts thousands of people each year.

Perhaps the most well-known section of Rota Vicentina is the Fishermen’s Trail in Alentejo, stretching from Porto Covo to Odeceixe for 55 miles and taking around 7 days to complete. In Algarve, the 65-mile route from Odeceixe to Sagres is also a stunning trail, featuring breathtaking coastal scenery, including crystal-clear waters and pristine beaches. Both of these options also include visits to small fishing villages, where you get to savour authentic Portuguese dishes with seafood caught fresh that morning.

Another popular route from the network, the Historical Way, offers a whole different kind of charm. The path winds through the region’s rural heartland, covering traditional villages and tranquil cork forests. Typically starting in Santiago do Cacém and finishing in Odeceixe, taking a total of 6 days, this trail allows you to experience the authentic culture of southwest Portugal, away from the crowds, even during the peak summer season

Algarve’s Wild West

For those seeking an untamed experience, with a mix of both coastal and inland explorations, the Wild West walking trail in the Algarve is the one. Focusing on the Sagres Peninsula, this walk makes the most of the area’s raw, natural beauty, featuring pine forests and green valleys in addition to the cliffs and beaches.

It’s a particularly great choice for bird watching fans, as the area is known to attract various species migrating from Northern Europe and Africa. The route includes a stop at the infamous Vicentina Coast Natural Park, where you can also spot numerous local residents, including ospreys, Bonelli’s eagles, white storks, raptors , Griffon vultures and others.

Via Algarviana

Also known as the GR13, Via Algarviana is a 300-kilometer trail through the heart of the Algarve’s countryside. Connecting Alcoutim, on the Spanish border, and ending in Cabo de São Vicente, at the very tip of mainland Europe, it showcases the region’s quieter and more rural side, away from the buzzing coastal cities.

The route is divided in 14 different sections, so hikers can easily choose how much distance they want to walk. Some of them take you through the difficult mountainous areas with steep ascents, while others offer an easy walk through peaceful villages and flat rural landscapes.

The Best of Algarve

A long-distance walking trail provides the ultimate way to see the best of Algarve. It is a slow-paced way to explore the region, witnessing how the Atlantic coast changes along the way as well as experiencing the subtle differences in traditional villages as you move closer to Alentejo.
