TAG Heuer are one of the ultimate Swiss watchmakers – crafting some of the finest watches in the world today. Their timepieces are renowned for their impeccable performance, reliability, precision and of course, sporty style.
While TAG Heuer have many beloved models, the Carrera is one that has become a real icon in the watchmaking world. This year marks the 60th birthday of this bold timepiece, so we decided to delve into the history of the Carrera and what we can expect from its unique design.
Where Did the Carrera Get It’s Name?
The brand is renowned for their connection to the world of sport, with links to tennis, golf and sailing. But it’s the world of motorsports that sparked the name for the iconic Carrera timepiece.
The Carrera Panamericana was a difficult 3,000 km route that saw drivers race from border to border across Mexico. The race lasted five days in total, starting at Juarez in the north and ending in Chiapas in the south.
It first took place in 1950 and was considered “one of the most dangerous” motorsport events on the planet, according to Red Bull. They say it was “conceived as a road race by the Mexican government to showcase the opening of the Mexican stretch of the Panamerican Highway”. They said that average speeds were in excess of 100mph, “despite the course including twisty mountain road sections”.
It is this high-intensity race that the iconic Carrera was named after when it was born in 1963.
TAG Heuer Have Many Beloved Models
To celebrate the 60th anniversary of Carrera, TAG Heuer have launched a limited-edition timepiece that pays homage to the popular Glassbox 2447 SN model. It features a silver sunray brushed dial, 39mm steel case, black leather strap and is water resistant to 100m.
There are only 600 of the 60th anniversary timepieces available, making it a highly sought after watch for collectors and enthusiasts alike.
It’s no secret that TAG Heuer watches offer the ultimate precision, performance, and style. The Carerra model showcases the watchmaker’s flair for innovation and their skill in crafting iconic pieces that will withstand the test of time.
What Features Does the Carrera Have?
The Carrera was designed with racing in mind – which is why legibility and functionality are at the forefront of the design. The legible face was created to be read at high speed, with simple hands and numerical markers. While Heuer’s creation of the tension ring offered the precision timekeeping that was pivotal to the design. Today, the Carrera features the Calibre TH20-00 movement – which offers exceptional precision as well as quick and reliable winding. The model is truly the ultimate example of Swiss watchmaking excellence.
