The team at Future Simple Studio (FSS) embarked on a remarkable journey to revitalise a 2500-square-foot loft space found within a century-old heritage structure.
This ambitious project held personal significance for Christine Djerrahian, founder of FSS, who resides in the space with her spouse and two young children.
Renovation Genesis: Breathing New Life into History
In the initial phase of the renovation endeavour, FSS undertook a comprehensive overhaul. Stripping away outdated finishes and demolishing interior partitions laid the groundwork for a fresh canvas. The objective? Crafting an expansive, family-friendly environment while honouring the industrial essence of the original edifice.
With meticulous attention to detail, the team meticulously curated each aspect of the renovation process, ensuring seamless integration of contemporary comforts with historical charm.
The removal of interior walls not only facilitated an open-plan layout but also accentuated the architectural integrity of the space. Throughout this phase, FSS remained steadfast in their commitment to preserving the building’s heritage, employing sustainable practices and locally sourced materials wherever feasible.
Expansion and Adaptation: Catering to Growing Needs
As the project evolved, a second phase unfolded, marked by the integration of an adjacent studio, thereby augmenting the space by almost 700 square feet. This expansion was a strategic move to accommodate Djerrahian’s expanding family.
With the newfound area, the dynamic of the living quarters shifted significantly. What was once a primary bedroom metamorphosed into a vibrant children’s playroom. Additionally, a new primary bedroom, a supplementary bathroom, a spacious wardrobe, and a cosy nursery-cum-meditation enclave were incorporated seamlessly.
The decision to annex the neighbouring studio underscored FSS’s commitment to adaptive reuse, harnessing underutilised spaces to meet evolving needs. This transformative phase exemplified the studio’s innovative approach to spatial design, seamlessly blending functionality with aesthetic appeal.
By prioritising flexibility and scalability, FSS ensured that the revamped loft could accommodate the family’s changing lifestyle requirements while retaining its intrinsic charm.
Innovative Design Philosophy: A Box Within a Box
Central to the design ethos was the concept of nesting a box within a box. This ingenious approach saw the integration of three distinct glazed wooden volumes within the robust concrete framework.
These elements served as efficient spatial dividers, delineating various residential functions. From kitchen to living areas, dining spaces to study nooks, the layout unfolded organically, fostering fluidity and openness.
The incorporation of glazed wooden volumes not only delineated spatial zones but also imbued the interior with a sense of warmth and intimacy. By juxtaposing sleek, modern elements with the building’s industrial heritage, FSS achieved a harmonious balance between tradition and innovation.
This thoughtful design intervention not only maximised the utility of the available space but also enhanced the overall user experience, creating a sanctuary that seamlessly catered to the family’s diverse needs.
Inspired Material Selection: Infusing Character and Warmth
Drawing inspiration from the building’s intrinsic character, FSS curated a material palette that exuded elemental charm and tactile allure. Walnut plywood, resonating with the earthy hues of the brick walls, instilled a sense of warmth.
Complementary shades of soft greys harmonised with the rugged concrete surfaces, while strategic use of glass and mirrors amplified the ethereal ambience. Lush foliage interspersed throughout the interior injected a whimsical, natural dimension, further enhancing the overall aesthetic appeal.
The selection of materials was informed by a nuanced understanding of the building’s historical context and architectural lineage. By honouring the site’s industrial heritage while infusing contemporary elements, FSS achieved a seamless fusion of past and present.
Each material choice was meticulously curated to evoke a sense of timelessness and authenticity, ensuring that the revitalised space remained rooted in its storied past while embracing the promise of a vibrant future.
