How did your background as a professional footballer shape your approach to physiotherapy and wellness?

As a youngster, I was football crazy and always dreamed of becoming a professional. I moved to Portugal at the age of 18 from Canada and played some matches for Belenenses, then in the Portuguese first division.

My time on the pitch showed me how closely the mind and body are connected. Leadership guided us, discipline kept us steady, and unity made us strong. This taught me that true wellness comes from balancing our mental, emotional and physical health.

Can you elaborate on the concept of “integrated healing” and how it’s central to Club Health’s philosophy?

At Club Health, our approach to “integrated healing” merges traditional physiotherapy with nutritional, psychological and lifestyle insights. Together, as a united team, we work to unlock the body’s full potential. We see every individual as one, aiming for sustainable results that optimise mental, emotional and physical health.

What inspired you to transition from a career in professional sports to becoming a leading physiotherapist and wellness expert?

While I was fortunate not to suffer any serious injuries during my football career, it underscored the importance of nurturing the body for optimal performance. This realization showcased the profound impact of physiotherapy. I qualified as a physio, studying at the Lisbon School of Health Technology and then became a physio for Benfica, one of the giants of Portuguese football.

After I moved to England, I became a physio for the academy at Crystal Palace. I always had an entrepreneurial spirit and I set up my own clinic in 2015, which evolved into Club Health. Now, my passion now lies in guiding others to harness their body’s potential and achieve sustainable results.

Could you share some success stories or transformational experiences of clients who have benefited from Club Health’s integrated approach?

Wellness Guru Luis Ribeiro Shares Secrets to a Fulfilling Life

Among our many success stories at Club Health, a particularly heartening one is of a 72-year-old woman who experienced a multiple foot fracture of her toes after a fall from her horse, coupled with the challenges of Parkinson’s disease.

Guided by our integrative approach, we worked diligently not only to help her regain mobility but to fulfil her dream: running a half marathon. This achievement stands testament to the resilience of the human spirit and the potential for healing. We get so much enjoyment from working with our patients to help them transform their lives.

In your own words, you mentioned that Club Health is not just about health but about life itself. Can you explain what this means and how it influences your practice?

At Club Health, we focus on more than just physical health. Club Health is a hub where people can service their existence in totality and understand the importance of a consistent lifestyle. Our rooms are like recharging stations, little getaways from our chaotic routines. They allow you to get in tune with your body, listen to what it has to say, work on it, service and maintain it.

We help patients unlock their full potential, prompting them to reflect on their current state and envision their best selves. Our goal is to provide purpose, guiding individuals towards a sustainable and fulfilling life.

Club Health caters to a high-end clientele, including celebrities and business executives. What sets your clinic apart in terms of the services and care you provide to such clients?

We offer bespoke, one-on-one services. Unlike the industry norm, we evaluate each patient case individually, moving away from fixing complex problems with one-dimensional fixes to go beyond the traditional scope of treatment through truly personalised care.

Recognising the unique pressures our patients face, we prioritise discretion, personalisation and comprehensive care. The best advocates for the service we offer are our patients, and we received incredible feedback from them.

You have a global client base. How do cultural differences impact your approach to physiotherapy and wellness?

Our clients at our London clinics come from all over the world. They are often international families, from the US, the Gulf or Asia, who live in London permanently or spend part of the year here. Cultural differences greatly enrich our approach. They teach us the universality of pain and recovery, but also the importance of tailored, culturally-sensitive treatments. For example, we have a number of patients who fast during Ramadan, and we would alter their treatments accordingly.

What role does preventative physiotherapy play in your practice, and why do you believe it’s essential for maintaining overall health?

We are reshaping the perception of physiotherapy. While traditionally seen as remedial, we want it to be both preventive and enhancing. We’re cultivating a mindset where visiting a physiotherapist isn’t reserved for pain episodes alone. Consistent check-ups, akin to dental appointments, need to become the norm.

Misalignments in our physical habits, often germinating since childhood, can morph into significant issues in adulthood – issues that can be mitigated if identified and rectified proactively. By educating our patients on consistent maintenance and proactive care, we aim to extend not just their lifespan but also their health span, ensuring optimal vitality and reduced susceptibility to injuries.

Can you share some insights into the relationship between mental health and physical health, particularly in the context of stress management and relaxation?

The connection between physical and mental health is significant. Stress and emotion, left unchecked, manifest physically. Equally, a lack of regular physical exercise can have damaging effects on mental health.

Regular exercise can improve mental strength by challenging us physically and mentally, and this helps build resilience and cope with stress. Exercising also releases endorphins, serotonin and dopamine which naturally reduce our pain and increase pleasure. So, by incorporating regular physical activity into our daily lives, we can foster a healthier, happier and more productive society.

Club Health offers a range of services, from physiotherapy to clinical pilates. Could you describe how these services work together to promote comprehensive wellness?

Wellness Guru Luis Ribeiro Shares Secrets to a Fulfilling Life

Whether it’s the precision of clinical pilates or the healing touch of physiotherapy, each service complements the other, fostering a holistic path to wellness. We aim to ensure that every aspect whether that is mental, physical or emotional, is nurtured to its pinnacle. Much more than just treating symptoms, our approach targets and resolves issues before they arise, resulting in a better, stronger, healthier you.

What are some common misconceptions about physiotherapy and wellness that you’ve encountered, and how do you address them in your practice?

Some believe physiotherapy is merely reactive, a remedy for injury. We educate patients about its proactive potential, illustrating how it enhances overall health, not just recovery. We prevent planned surgeries from happening and can proudly say that we have taken people off of pain medication for good.

Sustainable solutions are a core principle of Club Health. Can you provide examples of how you help clients achieve lasting results rather than quick fixes?

Quick fixes often lead to recurring issues. The approaches we so often see in physiotherapy are one-dimensional, with off-the-shelf solutions that address everyone, and as a result, no one.

Quick fixes along with avoidable surgeries, endless medication and undiagnosed conditions are among the reasons that I founded a multidisciplinary clinic which aims to change people’s lives through exceptional care. At Club Health, we prioritise root cause analysis, addressing foundational problems for long-term health.

Could you discuss the value of holistic approaches to healthy ageing and longevity, and how this fits into your practice?

Ageing gracefully is more than physical. At Club Health, we are not just about health; we are about life. Our goal is to unlock the potential in people’s bodies to help them grow older and better. It’s about cognitive vitality, emotional wellness, and purposeful living. Club Health integrates these pillars for a holistic approach to better healthspan.

What advice do you have for individuals looking to improve their overall well-being, especially those who may not have access to high-end wellness services?

Wellness is not a privilege but a right. Simple practices, like mindful breathing, regular mobility, flowing circulation, and organ health, can significantly enhance well-being, irrespective of one’s socio-economic status. In terms of specific advice, incorporating outdoor exercise into your routine can have transformative effects on physical and mental health.

Outdoor exercise also allows us to connect with our environment, boost our immune system and improve our mood. The best thing about it is that it is available to everyone.

Looking ahead, what are your future goals and aspirations for Club Health, and how do you see the field of physiotherapy evolving in the coming years?

We cut through the noise, combining proven physiotherapy methods and modern science to actually help people heal. We push for a real, all-encompassing approach to health, bringing together dedicated practitioners from around the world. We’re here to do more than just treat symptoms; we aim to guide people toward genuine well-being. Together, we’re working to bring real change to physiotherapy and lay down solid groundwork for health standards.
