Whitebox Cocktails brings bar-quality drinks to the ready-to-serve market, redefining luxury convenience for discerning cocktail lovers.

The luxury drinks world has been steadily evolving, and over the past few years, it has witnessed one of its most intriguing shifts.

A new generation of Britain’s most decorated bartenders have stepped away from their award-winning bars and chosen to apply their craft to a category long dismissed as convenient but compromised: the ready-to-serve cocktail.

Out of this change has come Whitebox Cocktails, a premium brand that has managed to capture the spirit, precision and elegance of the world’s great cocktail bars, all while presenting them in a single-serve format.

For discerning drinkers, this has been nothing short of a revelation. For the drinks industry, it has set a new standard.

A Collective of Bartending Heavyweights

Whitebox Cocktails was established in Edinburgh in 2021 by Alex Lawrence, Pietro Collina, Ben Iravani, Roman Shabodalov, Jack Wareing and Josh Rennie. Since then, the team has grown to include Chris Masters and designer Louise Chan.

Each founder brings a serious pedigree from the upper echelons of cocktail culture, including accolades such as World’s Best Bar and World’s Best Cocktail Menu. This is not the profile of a typical start-up, but rather a coalition of bartenders who have collectively decided that the time has come to reimagine what ready-to-serve can mean.

The goal has always been simple and ambitious in equal measure: take the standards of the world’s finest cocktail bars and make them available to everyone, without compromise, wherever they choose to drink.

Building It Themselves

What separates Whitebox from the rest of the crowded ready-to-drink market is the hands-on approach. The company produces everything itself. From developing recipes and mixing the liquids, to filling the cans, labelling, and packing, there are no intermediaries. As the team puts it, “Behind every can is a real team, a real place, and a whole cocktail factory! … No middlemen, no shortcuts, just a small team doing things properly from start to finish.”

This ethos would mean little without the infrastructure to back it up. Their Edinburgh factory has the capacity to produce around 6.5 million cocktails a year, and more than 25,000 cans a day roll off the line. Yet even at this scale, the drinks retain the complexity, precision and balance one expects from a cocktail made to order by a professional. This union of artisanal care and industrial efficiency is what has set Whitebox apart from countless pretenders in the category.

Whitebox Cocktails

At the core of the brand is its collection of cocktails, each treated with the reverence usually reserved for a bar’s signature serve.

The Pocket Negroni has quickly become Whitebox’s cult hit. It follows the classic recipe to the letter, with “perfectly balanced bitterness and sweetness … complemented by pronounced notes of bitter orange, rich juniper, and a hint of herbal complexity.” This is not merely an approximation of a Negroni, but a sharp, bittersweet interpretation that honours one of cocktail culture’s most enduring favourites.

The Freezer Martini is perhaps the most technically challenging drink in the range, but also the one that has won over the purists. A Martini is a notoriously unforgiving cocktail, requiring balance, precision and the right level of chill. Whitebox’s version is designed to be stored in the freezer and served ice cold, with the liquid reaching temperatures as low as -28°C. The result is clarity in flavour and the quenching refreshment Martini aficionados demand.

Squeezy’s Margarita brings the lively, citrus-forward brightness that has made the drink a staple across the world. Its sharp, zesty character captures the essence of a freshly mixed Margarita, while retaining the depth and balance that mark it as premium rather than mass-produced.

The Classic Cosmo remains a glamorous icon, with its distinctive blush-pink hue and a balance of cranberry, lime and premium vodka that makes it instantly recognisable. Whitebox’s version preserves both the drink’s cultural cachet and its carefully tuned flavour profile.

And then there is Chipper’s Old Fashioned, a drink that is as much about restraint as it is about richness. Using Virgin Oak Whisky, Cherrywood Bitters and Gum Sugar, it arrives pre-mixed “for a spot on measure,” delivering the smoky, warming complexity that has kept the Old Fashioned in the pantheon of cocktail classics.

Together, these cocktails form a portfolio that reads less like a novelty line-up and more like a carefully curated menu.

Awards and Accolades

Recognition has followed quickly. The brand has picked up Great Taste Awards for several of its creations, including the Pocket Negroni, Espresso Martini, Boulevardier, Margarita and Vieux Carré.

Collaborations have also elevated its profile, most notably with Ryan Chetiyawardana, better known as Mr Lyan, which secured Whitebox a place among the Top 50 Innovative Spirits Launches of 2023.

The drinks industry has taken note, not simply because the cocktails are well made, but because they represent a genuine redefinition of what the category can deliver.

Scaling Beyond the UK

Growth has been rapid. In its first six months in the United States, Whitebox recorded 400% sales growth. Since its launch, the company has built strong UK distribution and secured listings in the US, Denmark, France, Ireland and China.

In 2024, it partnered with Artisan Spirits to build distribution further, targeting key new markets such as Germany, Japan, the Netherlands and the UAE.

Such expansion reflects not just the company’s ambitions, but also the international appetite for high-quality, ready-to-serve cocktails that do not sacrifice authenticity.

A Reflection of Changing Tastes

Whitebox’s rise also mirrors wider changes in how people are consuming luxury. A recent IWSR survey revealed that a third of UK drinkers would rather indulge in a better-quality drink at home than venture out.

A desire for authenticity, quality and convenience has fueled this shift towards at-home luxury experiences.

As one customer put it, when they are not in a bar spending £30 on a Martini, they “crack open their Freezer Martini at home and are truly astonished at how they’ve managed to replicate the Martini for the home-drinking experience.” The fact that Whitebox can draw such comparisons is telling.

Innovation and the Road Ahead

The market for premium canned cocktails is projected to reach $40 billion by 2027. Whitebox has returned to its Seedrs community to build on this momentum, using crowdfunding to support continued growth.

Product development remains central to its strategy. In 2024, the company introduced three new cocktails: the Spicy Margarita (20.5% ABV), the Straight-Up Daiquiri (26% ABV) and the XO Vieux Carré (30% ABV). Each is a deliberate move into stronger, bolder territory, designed to appeal to evolving consumer tastes while staying rooted in classic cocktail tradition.

Establishing New Standards

Distribution now spans more than 1,000 UK retail outlets, as well as seven international markets. Stockists include Selfridges, Harrods and Amazon, proof that the brand has carved a place within both luxury retail and accessible channels.

In just a few years, Whitebox has moved from an ambitious start-up to a company that has reshaped expectations of an entire category. It has been shown that convenience need not come at the expense of craft, and that the standards of world-class bartending can be maintained even outside the bar.

The success is not simply about sales figures, international listings, or even awards. It represents a shift in how luxury drinking is defined and consumed. By making cocktails of genuine quality available in a format that suits modern life, Whitebox has created a new model for luxury at home and abroad.

As the drinks industry continues to evolve, Whitebox Cocktails stands as one of its most compelling stories: a testament to what happens when expertise, innovation and uncompromising standards collide in a single can.
