In this digital age, you’ll often see someone send a happy birthday message on social media. It comes complete with tons of pictures, a nice message, and a tag. Everyone joins in to send birthday wishes, and then they move on.

The same usually applies for sympathy, a new baby, or a big move. A nice message is sent on social media or via text. But what about the tangible gift?

Does it even still matter? The answer is yes. Tangible gifts have so much to offer, including:

The Element of Surprise

It isn’t that a nice social media post or text message isn’t heartwarming and delightful. They can be amazing. But most of the time, online greetings and sympathy aren’t surprising. They don’t typically have you covering your mouth with your hands or wiping tears from the corners of your eyes.

This is the benefit of a tangible gift. When you put together a care package, a memory box, or a bucket of treats for your friend or family, you have the chance to take their breath away.

A care package can come in so many forms. It could be a bereavement gift, a new baby bundle, or a birthday surprise. The key is to choose items you can tailor to the specific person and to the specific situation.

For someone grieving, a memory box filled with photos of the deceased can have a profound impact. For new parents, baby supplies and a sweet gift for the healing mom can bring squeals of joy. There are so many ways to surprise your loved ones with thoughtful items.

A Tactile Experience

It might seem obvious to some, but many people don’t realise how powerful a tactile experience is, especially when someone is grieving. While a digital message can be reassuring and make someone feel like they’re not alone, a tangible gift provides a sensory moment you simply cannot replicate with digital words. The ability to touch, hold, and visually experience a gift can shift someone’s feelings in ways that bring at least a little relief.

The tactile experience can come in many forms. To soothe someone during a hard time, you can send a basket of tea bags with a lovely mug and a pot of honey. For a friend who’s been ill for some time, you could bring over cosy socks and a warm blanket they can snuggle in.

If you have a friend who’s suffering from a loss, you could frame a photo of the deceased, so they can hold it in their hands and remember the good times. Each of these options can bring comfort and joy, particularly because they can be held with two hands.

Evidence of Effort

One of the biggest elements foundational to the tactile gift is that it takes time to consider, choose, and purchase or create. There’s simply no getting around it. If you send a care package, you have to put in real effort, even if you make your purchase online. There’s so much thought and time that comes with selecting just the right gift for just the right person on just the right occasion. A digital message doesn’t have quite the same resonance.

To go the extra mile with your sympathy gift or well wishes, you can be sure to tailor the experience a bit more. This customisation can include an engraving on a frame, an embroidered blanket, or even an inscription in a memory book.

Then, you can add a carefully chosen greeting card with a nice handwritten message inside. These are items your loved one can value precisely because of how much effort went into them.

Proof You Know Someone

Care packages are a lovely, tangible way to show how well you know someone. Sure, you can write about fun memories in a social media post, and you can even include photos over the years. But when you pick out a basket of goodies or a box filled with comfort items that speak directly to your loved one’s personality and needs, it’s a whole different experience. You’re saying, “I know you. I see you. I love you. I’m here for you.” And they can’t help but get the message.

Gift baskets give you an opportunity to shower your friend or family member with love in the most personal way. It might be for someone who’s grieving. It could be for a person who’s celebrating. Either way, including their favourite candy, scented candles, flowers, cookies, and other personal items will tell the story of your relationship over the years. It can be even better if you can show up in person with the basket and enjoy it with them. That’s a tangible and personal touch all at once.

In the end, tangible gifts serve as solid and permanent reminders of your love, care, and support for a friend or family member. There are so many wonderful ways you can personalise and customise virtually any item. You get to put your heart and soul into selecting fun treats or objects to put into a basket or box. And your loved one gets the surprise and delight of unboxing it all. Of course, you can still shoot a text or post on socials. But definitely follow the digital up with something tangible. You’ll be so glad you did.
