Have you spent a lot more time with your family in the last year or so than you ever had before this pandemic? If so, you may have been shocked to realize that you are not the idyllic Waltons after all.
For many families, this period of enforced house arrest has been an eye-opening experience, and possibly not in the way they were thinking.
Making Positive Changes
If you are worried about your family’s health – both mental and physical – it is time to take action as the parents.
It is hard to address bad habits when you are dealing with the stress of The Pandemic, but it is not impossible. It is worth considering your family and your individual personalities to figure out the best way to change.
Here are eight easy ideas that will help you make the most out of family life and ensure your family is happy and healthier for longer.
Take Charge Of Your Diet
The first step towards a healthier family is to eat better. That does not mean you need to become a vegan or radically change your lifestyle, but why not try some simple healthy foods?
The idea that you need meat and dairy for protein and calcium is outdated – with a little bit of research you may be surprised that plants can offer everything you need.
There are many ways to cook vegetables if they are not your thing – pizza burgers, cauliflower steaks, zucchini noodles, and kale chips are just some options.
Just adding more protein to your meals, either by upping your fresh (not processed!) meat and fish content or by adding powders and supplements found on websites such as Myprotein, is a great way to make a positive and healthy change to your family’s diet.
Sit Down To Dinner Together Every Day
Lack of time is a big issue for many families, but it does not have to be.
If you share the workload of preparing meals with your spouse or partner, and ideally your kids too, then you will have an easy opportunity to all sit down together at the dinner table.
This can be a valuable time for the whole family to reconnect and discuss what has been going on in their lives. It is also a great opportunity for the parents to teach kids (and adults!) about eating well as well as how to have good table manners, a skill for life that many kids and even adults are severely lacking.
Plan One Evening A Week Device-Free
It is time to become the family you have always wanted to be.
Families who spend time together and enjoy the company of one another are stronger and happier, and this is especially true at the dinner table.
One suggestion is that you take a break from any devices that require an internet connection at least one night of the week – great for keeping kids off Instagram, but it is also a good idea to break the doomscrolling cycle of Facebook for adults too.
It is a great opportunity to reconnect and talk about what is going on in each other’s lives as well as plan for the future. It may even give you time to have a family discussion about health and wellness too.
Get Family Counselling
It is time to tackle the big issues that hold families back.
When parents and kids first start their journey to health and wellbeing, they may be feeling a lot of hope and excitement, and by the time you have thoroughly examined your life and diet, you might be feeling some pretty deep-rooted health problems such as fatigue, anxiety, depression or even some form of addiction.
If this is the case, then there are no short-term fixes for these problems – they are complex and require support. If you have been trying to tackle these problems on your own, then it might be time to consider looking for professional support.
Play Team Sports Together
Sports have always been a great way of forging a healthy and active family relationship.
The main reasons people do not choose team sports is the cost they have or the time it requires, but playing team sports as a family can be as simple as going to the park for an afternoon of softball or soccer.
The only way of finding out if your family will be up for getting involved is by trying.
Play Musical Instruments Together
If you have a family with an interest in music, then consider giving each family member a musical instrument to play so that you can play together.
Music is a great way of improving concentration, coordination, and communication skills.
If you have a child who is a budding musician, then helping them develop their skills by encouraging them to play and learn with their family will help them with the next step in their musical development.
Get A Dog
This is one of the best ideas ever for kids who just want a friend they can rely on. If you have a kid who loves animals, then getting them a dog might be just the thing to spark a life-long interest and perhaps even propel them towards a career in animal health and veterinary sciences.
Dogs come in all shapes, sizes, and ages. If possible, try to get a dog from a rescue centre, you will be giving a new life to an animal who desperately needs it, and you will be teaching your children about kindness and respect, as well as the very real and positive benefits of charity.
For many people, a dog is the greatest friend they will ever have and it can be one of the best remedies for anxiety.
Fix Up Your House
Living in a family home that is not looking its best will begin to affect everyone’s mental health eventually. Humans need to have pride in where they live, and families also need to live in a safe environment.
The housekeeping and general maintenance of the home can begin to suffer if no one takes it upon themselves to keep up to date, so why not make it up to the family members to help out where they can?
- Hang art or family photographs along the walls
- Redecorate your bedrooms to reflect your personality
- Clean out every closet so it’s always organized
- Fix any dangerous things such as exposed wires and broken floorboards
- Plant some flowers out the front (even in pots) to welcome people in
